If you are interested in research, the University of South Carolina has several research centers and groups available to you, including the Structural Dynamics and Intelligent Infrastructure laboratory, the Berge laboratory for green waste management and the Advanced Railroad Technology Group.

Students pursuing the statistics major take challenging courses with nationally recognized faculty members and pursue the internship and research opportunities that keep statisticians in high demand. As a statistics major, you will develop the ability to perform fundamental statistical analyses, prepare informative graphics for public presentation and use statistical programming languages with applications across a variety of fields.

There are three options under the bachelor's degree with a major in statistics program. You can pursue the general major, the major with emphasis in actuarial mathematics and statistics, or the intensive major. The major with emphasis in actuarial mathematics and statistics is designed for students planning a career as an actuary, while the intensive major is designed for students planning on graduate study in statistics.

The department's 15 faculty members are well-known for teaching and research excellence. As a statistics major, you can also benefit from the university's Center of Reliability and Quality Sciences, where faculty members and students conduct research projects on and off campus. You can also seek out internship opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Whether you pursue a career in a hotel, restaurant, resort or private club, you will be well prepared with the fundamentals of business: accounting, economics, business law, communications and computer applications.

All hospitality management majors receive a similar range of operational and management instruction. The combination of two mandatory internship experiences and exciting electives will allow you to tailor your learning to a specific setting. With a degree in public health, you can join the effort to protect the environment, prevent the spread of disease, enhance health and well-being at home and abroad, and affect change in policy and law that ensures the rights of all citizens to a healthy world.

As a public health major, you will develop the specialized knowledge and skills needed to address current and emerging public health issues. You will learn to demonstrate proficient reasoning and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to make sound decisions and solve problems as they apply to public health.

As a student in the only school of public health in the state of South Carolina, you will discover quality learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. Economics offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Professional economists are involved in economic forecasting, market research, cost-effectiveness studies, investment analysis, policy analysis, impact studies, program evaluations and solving budget problems.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary program highly focused on the improvement of human health, combining the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care from diagnostics to treatment.

As a biomedical engineering major, you will develop the ability to identify, formulate and solve open-ended problems at the interface of engineering and medicine using skills acquired in mathematics; biological, chemical and physical sciences; and engineering. You will also learn how to communicate technical material, function on a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility, continue along a path of lifelong learning, and recognize economic, social and global issues related to the profession.

You will enjoy courses with hands-on laboratory components as well as a senior capstone design sequence, during which you will work on problems defined by doctors or biomedical engineering industries. You will also be encouraged to get involved with research opportunities.

Emphasizing the interdisciplinary pursuit of comparative and/or international politics, the international studies program is designed to create the leaders of tomorrow. We allow students to tailor their programs of study to focus on such topics as foreign policy, global economic or environmental studies, or international conflict and cooperation.

As an international studies major, you will gain an understanding about how politics, government and governance shape the world and the quality of citizenship in the world. You will benefit from outstanding faculty members and challenging coursework that will help you develop critical learning skills, especially as related to the study of politics.

You will be able to focus on one or two fields within international studies, such as international security, international economics, U.S. foreign policy, global environmental politics, international human rights, Latin American studies, European studies, African studies, Asian studies and international development. You will also complete a public service internship to gain hands-on experience.

As companies face ever-increasing challenges around the globe, risk management and insurance become even more important to a business. This major focuses on the methods of developing financial protection against loss with emphasis on insurance principles, solving risk management problems and socioeconomic security programs.

As a risk management and insurance major, you will develop cutting-edge business knowledge and develop a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. You will also gain global opportunities, cultural awareness and language appreciation. Are you interested in learning about some of the most pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration, discrimination, economic and social inequality, demographic change, race and ethnic relations, and health and well-being? If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.
 
As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

As part of your learning, you will be able to take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, and a statistics laboratory. You can also develop your own research project or collaborate with faculty members on a project and participate in department events, including guest speaker presentations and workshops.
