Environment and health-related occupations almost always require sound, basic training in biology. The Master of Science in accountancy (MSA) in the School of Business provides an advanced professional plan of study designed to prepare individuals for careers as professional accountants in public accounting, industry, or nonprofit and governmental sectors. Through the Department of Accounting, students learn the skills and knowledge needed to enter the accounting field and to form a foundation for advancement to the highest levels of the profession. Completion of this program will provide, in most cases, the educational qualifications required to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. Upon completion of the MSA, candidates should have acquired the technical knowledge that will serve as a basis for preparation for the relevant professional examination required for certification as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor.

The bachelor's in biological sciences with a specialization in ecology, evolution and conservation at SIUE prepares students for positions that require the application of ecological principles to the solution of environmental problems. The specialization also prepares students for advanced study in all areas of biology, including wildlife ecology and forestry. Students selecting this specialization will take a planned sequence of courses that includes basic biological sciences, ecology, evolution, and environmental science. This study may include laboratory and field research. A variety of elective courses are available to allow students to pursue special interests such as plant or animal ecology, environmental management, and evolutionary biology, at either the organismal or cellular level. The curriculum within the Department of Environmental Sciences will increase students’ technical competence in addressing these environmental issues, their origins, ramifications and resolutions. The program will promote experiential learning and professional education to prepare students for career opportunities in a wide variety of workplaces.

For example, a licensed environmental health practitioner can be employed for inspection, sampling and reporting for sanitary, food safety, sewage and waste disposal, drinking water, pest control, or industrial hygiene.

The environmental health specialization provides students with the education necessary to identify, evaluate and control (prevent or mitigate) environmental conditions which may have significant impacts on human health. Examples of the problem areas requiring environmental health expertise are:

• Maintaining adequate quality and quantities of food and drinking water.
• Safe treatment and disposal of domestic and industrial waste materials.
• Limiting or reducing air and noise pollution.
• Reducing occupational exposure to hazardous substances and unsafe conditions.

Faculty in the Department of Music believe students in undergraduate academic programs in music should receive a comprehensive musical background that includes cultural knowledge through the general education program, individual performance, ensemble performance, scholarly studies in music theory and history/literature, and where applicable, teacher education courses. The intent is to develop skilled and informed musicians, able scholars, and excellent and enthusiastic teachers.

In SIUE's School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, the clinical child and school psychology program within the Department of Psychology is comprised of two separate tracks:

• Clinical child psychology
• School psychology

The clinical child and school psychology program is one of only a handful of combined clinical child and school psychology programs in the nation. Training emphasizes evidence-based practices, prevention, the ecological/systems approach, and the consultative role of the psychologist. Students complete practica experiences each semester as they complete the program. Students in the clinical child track will be prepared to work with children, adolescents and their families in the health system and other community agencies under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers. Our students are also well prepared to pursue doctoral education at other universities following completion of a master's degree.

The school psychology track provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for further education and training in the specialist degree program in school psychology. Students pursuing certification in school psychology are admitted to the master's program with the expectation that they will go on to complete the specialist degree program in school psychology at SIUE.

The job prospects for students who enroll in and complete the requirements for the specialist degree program in school psychology are excellent due to a nationwide shortage of school psychologists. Students in the clinical child track have a strong track record of getting accepted into doctoral programs. A large number of industrial companies and many research laboratories use genetic engineering and cell biology techniques in their work. Job opportunities are numerous and growing in number. Students with training in genetic engineering and cellular biology may be employed in diverse laboratory settings including plant breeding, insecticide development, and the production of pharmaceuticals.
