Geography is more than learning to read maps and memorize state capitals. The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences offers a variety of courses in human, physical, and regional geography, as well as geospatial techniques. A variety of career opportunities await graduates with a degree in geography from SIUE. We offer the only geography program in the St. Louis metropolitan area and as such, our graduates are in demand for positions in the region’s growing geospatial workforce. Employers include federal and state government agencies; national security contractors; tech companies; engineering firms; utility companies; local and regional governments; agricultural companies; and environmental nonprofit organizations. Our geography graduates work as geospatial analysts, cartographers, imagery analysts, urban planners, retail location analysts, climate scientists, resource managers, sustainability consultants, and park rangers.

The Master of Arts in history program in the Department of History contributes to the personal enrichment of students, as well as lifelong learning skills and recognition of responsibilities as members of a society composed of many communities of memory. Graduates of the program, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, leave SIUE with a firm education in the liberal arts and with excellent communication and critical thinking skills. Students can also gain crucial hands-on experience in documentary editing, digital history projects and archival research.

The master's in history serves as important preparation for the pursuit of a variety of career opportunities. Some students choose to pursue careers as history instructors, while others choose to pursue careers in various other fields.

English majors find their coursework in the College of Arts and Sciences to be both practical and pleasurable, an appropriate mix of traditional and contemporary classes that span the breadth of English studies. At SIUE, faculty members in the Department of English Language and Literature pride themselves on being strong teachers, and our curriculum reflects changing approaches to 21st-century English studies.

Technological and economic trends often shift abruptly and dramatically, but students prepared in English language and literature find that the abilities they've developed never grow obsolete. English majors are well prepared for a variety of employment opportunities. For those interested in careers as high school English teachers, we offer a fully accredited, four-year program of study leading to professional educator licensure in secondary English language arts (grades 9-12).

The graduate curricula provide advanced preparation for professional work as a teacher and/or performer. Students must successfully complete placement examinations in music theory and music history/literature (or the review courses MUS 500a, b) and a performance audition (if required for the student’s specialization). Certificate degrees are designed to appeal to teachers seeking additional professional training and career opportunities. Many students choose to pursue a certificate alongside an MM, with certain courses counting toward both degrees.

Once we understand the larger social forces that influence our own behavior and that of others, we can create policies, organizations, and even families that benefit the majority of people rather than the powerful few.

At SIUE, we focus on application. Students in the Department of Sociology participate in hands-on experiences so they can apply what they learn in their classes. Students pursuing general sociology work in communities helping gather data and provide suggestions on how to make those communities stronger. Diversity and social justice students complete internships in nonprofit organizations learning to write grants and help groups find resources. Students specializing in employment relations complete internships in organizations where they help uncover how to make workers more committed and productive. Through systematically gathering information from different groups, sociology can be a powerful tool for the betterment of communities and organizations.

The specialization option in employment relations is designed to prepare students to apply sociological knowledge to the practical problems of the workplace. Fundamental changes in work and industry have intensified employer demands for broadly skilled professionals, supervisors, administrators, coordinators and consultants capable of critically evaluating, planning and implementing workplace changes.

The fast change of pace in our society is creating new career opportunities for individuals trained in multiple disciplines. The Master of Science in integrative studies allows students to access expertise from two or three areas and integrate courses into a degree that meets the needs of an emerging career field.

Organizational Design Thinking
The integrative studies degree with a focus area in organizational design thinking combines courses in applied communication studies with courses from instructional technology. Through this course work, you will learn to apply design thinking methodology at the nexus of communication, technology, and organizational training.

Your coursework will teach you how to effectively redefine organizational problems, ideate to envision possibilities, facilitate processes to bring those ideations to fruition, and test your solutions to ensure meaningful results. And, what’s more, you will learn to do all of these within a design process that helps you create a culture of empathy among all stakeholders.

The graduate program in speech-language pathology from SIUE's School of Education, Health and Human Behavior combines classroom instruction, research and practical experiences. A full range of courses and practicum opportunities prepares students to work with a variety of individuals with communication needs in various work settings. The program is typically completed in five to six full-time semesters. For the past several years, 100% of our students have achieved a passing score on the PRAXIS examination. Courses and clinical experiences are provided during the day with some evening offerings. This program is completed entirely on the Edwardsville campus.

The speech-language pathology program within the Department of Applied Health offers unique opportunities for practicum experiences on-and off-campus. The program has agreements with nationally and internationally known hospitals, agencies, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and educational facilities. The program can provide students with exceptional experiences with children and adults with neurological disorders, hearing impairments, autism, speech and language impairments, aphasia, stuttering and voice disorders.

The career outlook for speech-language pathologists continues to be very positive. One hundred percent of students graduating with a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from SIUE are employed within the first year of graduation and many students are employed before they graduate. In addition to a positive career outlook, most of our students complete the program within the expected time frame and pass the national PRAXIS examination.
