The SIUE School of Engineering is one of the most comprehensive engineering schools in the region, offering a broad collection of professionally accredited engineering programs. In the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, courses are offered in the areas of fluid mechanics and thermal sciences, structural mechanics and vibrations, nonlinear dynamical systems, as well as mechatronics, robotics and control systems.

Students with a graduate degree in mechanical engineering will be well-prepared to pursue a career in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, manufacturing, energy, automotive, bioengineering, robotics and automation and computer-aided design and engineering. The department and outdoor venues on our beautiful campus, situated on 2,660 acres, provide excellent opportunities for innovative biological study. The College of Arts and Sciences' outdoor classroom consists of a 75-acre lake, a 35-acre botanical garden and 380 acres of forest and restored grasslands set aside as a nature preserve. The Department of Biological Sciences is located in Science Building West, a modern, science education facility with fully equipped teaching and research labs. The department is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology in microscopy, physiology, histology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics and toxicology research, and includes extensive botanical and zoological teaching collections. Opportunities for plant and animal research are available in our greenhouse and vivarium facilities.

The business administration program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, and provides a broad education in the functional areas of modern business, the behavior of organizations and decision-making processes, as well as analytical methods for solving basic problems affecting commerce and business practices. Our students find that the combination of knowledge acquisition and skill development is appealing and rewarding. Students in the School of Business will also learn about the ethical and global issues facing today’s businesses, while refining their communication skills and abilities. They will also learn to make leadership decisions based on quantitative data using analytical tools.

Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in administration or management of business firms, in banking and insurance, and in federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as a variety of other settings where knowledge of business functions and practices is required. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in business and financial operations occupations is projected to grow 5% through 2029.

Entrepreneurship
The entrepreneurship specialization focuses on the special problems of new venture development and the management of the small business enterprise. The specialization prepares students for entrepreneurial and managerial roles in small ventures, as well as for new venture management and “intrapreneurship” roles in larger firms. By carefully selecting courses in other areas of business, students can prepare for positions in manufacturing, service, or retailing organizations. The specialization requires a practicum (MGMT 476) in which students work with start-up ventures, small businesses, or small business development groups to apply their knowledge to small business problems.

The elementary education program in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior is a collaborative agreement between SIUE and public school districts. Classroom teachers, university professors and faculty supervisors work together to provide elementary education majors a unique opportunity to regularly interact with students in grades 1-6. Housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning, this program addresses both the national standards set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the Association for Childhood Education International and state standards set by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The newly redesigned secondary education program in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior focuses on anti-racism and social justice. In response to the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, this program utilizes the brand new Culturally Responsive Teacher and Leader Standards as they join Illinois in their collective effort to have the teaching force reflect the demographics of students in K-12 in the next four years.

Students pursuing most majors in the College of Arts and Sciences and Professional Educator Licensure through the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior are presented with two career pathways; that of their major area of study, and that of a career educator. According to the U.S. Bureau of Education and the Illinois State Board of Education, the employment outlook for 2016-2026 is strong for high school teachers, both nationally and within the state. As is the case with all teacher education programs at SIUE, the secondary education program has an exceptional record of preparing highly effective teachers.

Track Option: Corporate and Organizational Communication
Students who choose the corporate and organizational communication track focus on communication within the context of businesses and other organizations. Effective communication in organizations is necessary both for the attainment of organizational goals and for individual productivity and satisfaction. This track is designed for those who will work in organizational settings and who want to become more effective in their interactions with others for a more successful and fulfilling work life. This knowledge is especially important now that the "world of work" is undergoing such rapid change. In addition to learning, understanding, and applying organizational theories and research, students will develop important organizational skills such as conflict management, decision making, goal setting and team building.
