Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Available concentrations include the financial analyst honors program, information systems and business analytics, and marketing. Many combined concentrations are also offered, including entrepreneurship and management.

The financial analyst concentration for business administration majors allows you to share an integrated educational experience with a small group of motivated students who have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

If you recently earned your bachelor's degree and want to enhance your knowledge before entering the workplace; or if you have been working and want to make a career change, the Full-Time MBA program at the University at Albany is the right program for you.

In your first year, you learn fundamental concepts in finance, accounting, marketing, operations, human resource management, organizational behavior, and information technology. You will also travel abroad and participate in an international consulting project.

During your second year, you work closely with research faculty and regional business leaders as you develop leading edge knowledge and practical skills in your concentration area through hands-on experiences in real business settings.

Human Resource Information Systems
UAlbany offers the only human resource information systems concentration in the nation that is dually accredited by both the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and AACSB.

This concentration enables you to become a competent and technically skilled human resource manager and teaches you how to use technology to achieve greater business efficiency and increase workforce performance.

Topics include recruiting, selection, performance management, compensation and benefits, enterprise resource planning, cloud computing, social networking, and human resource information systems and software applications that support recruitment, benefits administration, and employee management.
