Public Management
Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective manager in public and nonprofit organizations. To develop specialized skills, you can earn sub-concentrations by taking multiple courses in one or two sub-fields (Local Government Management, Organizational Behavior and Theory, Human Resources Management) or work with your advisor to design your own.

Organizational Behavior & Theory Concentration

• The Organizational Behavior & Theory concentration provides you with the people management skills needed in today’s organizations. The focus is on leadership in teams, groups, and organizations. Courses cover both the process and structure of management and often involve exercises and simulations that practice the skills you need to succeed as a manager.

Local Government Concentration

• The local government management concentration to prepare you for the current and future challenges local governments face. You will learn about real examples of how to manage local governments as well as the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively serve our citizens. Graduates of this concentration have gone on to become professional city, county, town or village managers.

Human Resource Management Concentration
The Human Resources Management curriculum trains you to manage organizations and their employees effectively in the public, private, or non-profit sector.
Areas in the Human Resources Management concentration include:

• The political and institutional contexts of public organizations
• Managing and appraising public-sector performance
• Public employee motivation and other employee work attitudes
• Managing workforce diversity, equality, and equity
• Negotiating and managing conflict in the workplace

Perhaps you'd like to counsel children with behavioral difficulties or work with seniors, run a homeless shelter or treat addictions, promote workplace diversity or change social welfare policy - all to help people function at their best in society. That would make you an ideal social welfare major or minor.  

The undergraduate social welfare program at UAlbany teaches you how to advance social, economic and environmental justice and to serve people who are vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed. You will gain firsthand experience working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and/or communities to create change and improve social conditions. 

Gain an advanced understanding of the criminal justice system and criminology. Whether you want to further your role in law enforcement or become active in public policy, you will acquire the knowledge for a successful career in areas like policing, law, crime analysis, and research with a master's degree in criminal justice from the University at Albany.

Public Economics and Finance
Manage the complex finances of public, nonprofit or healthcare organizations or become a policy or financial analyst in a policy research settings inside and outside government. Many top public and nonprofit managers began their careers in budgeting or finance. Training in finance and public economics can provide you with the skills you need for a successful career as a financial analyst, manager, or policy analyst.

Rockefeller’s Public Economics and Financial Management concentration will increase your understanding of:

• Government policy through the lens of economic efficiency and equity
• Analysis and design of public policy and how it relates to economics and finance
• The processes and analytical techniques involved in developing and managing public budgets
• Major government programs and examination from a theoretical and empirical viewpoint

You may pursue either or both sub-concentrations: Financial Management or Public Economics or work with your advisor to design your own.

Develop the skills you need to become an agent for positive social change and an effective advocate for marginalized people across gender, race, class, sexuality, and nationality differences.

In the master's program in women's, gender and sexuality studies at UAlbany, you examine how gender at the intersections of race, ethnicity, economic status, and sexual identity impacts and is impacted by different political, social, and cultural systems.

For your final project, you complete original research that aims to connect feminist theory with actionable community engagement.

Develop your visual art practice within an engaged community of peers when you earn a master's degree in studio art from the University at Albany.

The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Management at UAlbany will give you a broad understanding of the relationships between government legislation, public policy, economics, politics, civil rights, regulation and finance, and city, state, federal, and global affairs.

The program includes foundational coursework and electives in management and politics, and quantitative methods and policy. Then you get to earn a concentration in the area of study that best matches your personal interests and career goals.

Philosophy and Ethics
All policies have ethical implications. Should the law help the majority or minority? Who will decide? In this concentration you will explore many of the moral dilemmas confronted by public servants, non-profit leaders, and business owners.

If you like the idea of chasing cyber criminals, thwarting international terrorists, and preventing economic catastrophe when flood waters rise, then a bachelor's in emergency preparedness, homeland security, and cybersecurity may be a good choice for you.

Play an active role in command center simulations and emergency response drills, and gain hands-on experience working with private companies, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies.

This program prepares you for positions in agencies such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Secret Service, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Cybersecurity
Help companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations protect sensitive and proprietary information from data breaches, hackers, inside threats, and natural disasters like fires and floods.

The MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) program at the University at Albany is designed to educate the next generation of professionals and innovators. The master’s program provides a high degree of specialization in one of three technical concentration areas: signal processing and communications, electronic circuits and systems, and control and computing systems.

UAlbany ECE students may choose to study full-time or part-time; and can select either a thesis option that includes a multiple-semester research experience or a non-thesis option with a one-semester project or project course. No matter the path taken, earning an MS in ECE is a stepping stone to career advancement or further study.

Create useful applications and solve practical data management problems with interdisciplinary skills in information technology and computer science taught in the bachelor's program in informatics.
