Organized around guided flexibility, our program offers a core of knowledge to help prepare you for a career in political science, government or law — along with the freedom to explore your own areas of interest.

The department emphasizes the global nature of the contemporary political world — characterized by the deepening interdependence among nations and regions, as well as a blend of cultures and political systems. Students will study the political behavior of leaders, citizens and social groups the formal institutions that carry out public policy, while developing an understanding of the hows and whys of governing.

Join SUNY Oswego’s Political Science Club. Get politically involved with the Student Association or different student organizations. Work individually with faculty on areas of particular interest to you. Choose among many opportunities to study abroad — either for short periods as part of a class or in semester, summer or year-long programs.

Earn up to 12 semester hours of credit working as an assistant in local government or citizens’ organizations, state agencies, the state legislature in Albany -- or in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Congress, the White House or the Supreme Court, as well as non-governmental organizations. Internship placements are also available abroad. Excel, and you could be inducted into the Oswego chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.

All students engage in research activities through a broad range of research courses, independent study or a senior honors thesis. By following a concentration in either decision science, management information systems or operations management, you can add deeper areas of knowledge to your portfolio.

Apply for a study-abroad program in Europe, Australia or mainland China — or one of the many internships available at the local, national and international levels. Join the SCOPE student organization to learn supply chain and operations management techniques and models that will give you a leg up on the competition and increase your job readiness.

The school counseling program builds upon a core of psychological and educational foundations and specialization areas including counseling theory, group process, appraisal, and vocational development and decision-making.

At SUNY Oswego you will participate in supervised practice in individual and group counseling, field work consultation experiences and comprehensive professional services in school, college and social agency settings.

Elective courses, practice and field experiences can focus on a desired institutional placement such as elementary, middle, junior high and/or senior high school, college settings and agencies. Following admission, you will discuss the total program with your designated faculty advisor.

The year long capstone experience places students in a position of developing software for real clients. The laboratory and instructional facilities support and encourage creativity and teamwork. Oswego’s software engineering program — the first in all of SUNY — provides a systems-oriented curriculum that encompasses software requirements, design, construction, testing, maintenance, configuration management, engineering management, engineering process, tools and quality assurance.

Join the Computer Science Association, which sponsors guest speakers, conducts programming contests, arranges tours of companies that hire graduates and provides opportunities for advanced students to tutor and mentor first-year students. Develop software for real clients during your year-long capstone experience. Pursue an internship or co-op opportunity in a company or institution, and gain software development experience in finance, defense, manufacturing, government or other fields.

SUNY Oswego’s bachelor of science degree program in Software Engineering (SE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET — the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

Offered jointly by the Atmospheric and Geological Sciences Department and Chemistry Department, this program covers topics ranging from the chemical makeup of Venus to the search for oil on Earth. Courses cover general, historical and structural geology; mineralogy; petrology; and physical chemistry.

You can perform research with professors around the country, or learn firsthand about field-based research and much more in our Geology Field Program.

Facilities include four full-sized laboratories, a seismograph for recording worldwide earthquakes and a geology computer lab in the Shineman Center.

You will take specialized courses in risk management, lines of insurance and employee benefits while also gaining core strengths in such areas as accounting, finance, marketing and management.

Study risk management problems and solutions in depth during your capstone experience. You’ll study in the region (Central New York) that has the second-highest insurance industry employment east of the Mississippi. In our English program in literary studies, you'll cultivate valuable skills in writing and critical thinking while exploring literary works by diverse writers. Courses stress the importance of critical reading, writing and research to provide you with a background suitable for many kinds of careers. Our diverse faculty teach and publish across the historical and theoretical spectrum, and students benefit from an interdisciplinary mix (for example, a course on crime fiction co-taught by faculty in English and sociology).

Present papers at regional and national research conferences. Publish your work in The Oswegonian student weekly, Great Lake Review creative writing journal and Exist e-publication. Excel and join the Oswego chapter of the international English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta. As a senior, enroll in Words in the World, to connect with the world of professional communications by designing and producing writing and research-related projects for businesses and non-profit organizations.

To integrate research results from a wide range of disciplines into a more complete understanding of the mind, the programs draw on methods associated with psychology, computer science (artificial intelligence), linguistics, philosophy, anthropology and biology. You’ll start building a solid foundation in the field through two introductory courses that focus on the core values of cognitive science and the seminal ideas associated with contributing disciplines and the brain, mind and consciousness. In addition to learning more about yourself, you will be better equipped for success in our technologically vibrant society.

Enroll in our BA degree program and select a set of three upper-division courses from a broad range of options — including Neural Networks, Cognitive Musicology, Computational Linguistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Evolutionary Psychology and Artificial Intelligence. Or choose our more tightly focused BS degree program and pursue additional coursework in psychology and computer science. Use your nine-semester-hour learning agreement to explore a particular aspect of the field in depth — and develop your own interest into a wealth of focused knowledge.

Our program is accredited by the American Chemical Society and is ranked in the top three in the number of certified degrees award in New York. Graduates of SUNY Oswego’s chemistry programs have gone on to study at prestigious graduate schools, and have received national recognition as chemists, researchers and educators. Join the student affiliate of the American Chemical Society, which offers free tutoring and other services, and has often been cited as one of the most outstanding in the country. Excel and you may qualify for the chemistry honors program, which emphasizes independent study and research, or even the national honor societies Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi.
