The Secondary Education program prepares students to work in grades 7-12. Graduates of the Secondary Education program earn a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S. Ed.) with certification in one subject area (listed below). Supplemental certification may be added in English as a Second Language.

The Management major helps students enhance communication and problem solving skills.  It is a pre-major.  The major teaches the activities and functions of a business. It also builds leaders adept in planning, organizing, staffing and leading an organization.  Available courses include:

Environmental Science
The Environmental Science major combines laboratory and field work, internships and classroom study. This program is for students interested in a variety of fields including water resources and air quality, wildlife management and biodiversity conservation, and environmental toxicology and chemistry. The Biology major offers four concentrations: Integrative Biology, Global Health Biology, Science Education and Cell and Molecular Biology. Available courses include:

• Microbiology

The Integrative Biology degree plan introduces students to the wholeness of biology through an integrative perspective. The Global Health degree plan is designed for students with an interest in tropical diseases, their etiology and their control, and offers a wide range of career paths. The Science Education degree plan prepares students to obtain a science education certification. The Cell and Molecular Biology degree plan provides a solid foundation in cellular function and genetic control of biological processes to support exploration of disease etiology.

Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering major (designated as a pre-major) helps students build a strong engineering foundation by studying thermal/fluids, materials/mechanical systems and design. In addition to foundational mechanical engineering courses, students can further specialize by choosing electives that will improve their ability to apply fundamentals and to design machines and energy systems. The Business for Secondary Education major (designated as a pre-major) is a Bachelor of Business Administration degree designed for students planning to teach business courses at the high school level. Coursework is a combination of the fundamentals of business and education courses. Available courses include:

• Teaching in Secondary Schools
• Principles of Microeconomics
• Social Issues in Education
• The Intellectual Tradition in the Ancient World
• Legal Environment of Business

Students complete internship semesters where they work in local schools. This degree leads to Texas teacher certification.

Slavic and East European Studies
Slavic and East European Studies surveys countries that make-up more than one-fifth of the global landmass and are collectively home to more than 300 million people. Coursework includes studies of the Slavic culture, politics and history. It is paired with intensive studies of the Russian language. Available courses include:

• Russian Drama

Anthropology
As a discipline, anthropology studies human diversity across time and space, attempting to understand the human past, present, and future using tools and techniques from various sub-fields like biological anthropology, archaeology, and sociocultural anthropology. It utilizes a comparative approach between people/populations and among different species to understand the forces that have shaped their ways of life.

We aim to educate students to address real-world problems through a combination of classroom learning, seminars and hands-on field and laboratory research opportunities. This can include, for example, examining fossil casts or modern human bones, studying at the zoo or in villages in developing countries, and digging for artifacts in the fields or just facts in the library.Our faculty pursues research in disease diagnostics and other biomarkers, Global and One Health, ecological anthropology, forensic anthropology, fossil excavation, modern Mayan cultures, DNA analyses, GIS, and both historic and prehistoric archaeology. Research sites include Central and Latin America, the Caribbean, West, East, and South Africa, near Eastern Mediterranean, and Texas. All of these projects offer excellent opportunities for students to participate in primary research working alongside their professors.
