Biological systems have many interacting units at the level of molecules, cells, organs and organisms. These complicated systems may be understood through the construction, analysis and computational simulation of mathematical models. Such models exploit both theory and observation to provide new predictions of the behavior of complex biological systems. The UD Quantitative Biology Program equips students with crucial mathematical tools along with the requisite scientific knowledge necessary to apply them in the life sciences.

History majors at the University of Delaware explore the past while acquiring skills to shape the future. The major prepares graduates for successful careers in fields from consulting to government, education to the arts and from museums to management. Alums report that our program taught them to analyze complexity and prepared them to communicate their conclusions clearly and convincingly. Effective analysis of documents, objects and ideas from the past requires “historical empathy” — reading with an open mind in ways that foster deep understanding of the perspectives and motivations of others. The criminal justice major offers a liberal arts approach to crime, law and justice that integrates theory, research and legal analysis. It emphasizes the history of crime and the criminal justice system, the structure of its institutions and problems faced by professionals and leaders at every level, from the halls of Congress to the urban police beat. Criminal justice is a multidisciplinary field that draws together perspectives from sociology, political science, psychology, history, philosophy and law in an effort to understand major issues surrounding the causes of criminal behavior, inequalities in the criminal justice system and the organization of criminal justice institutions. As a student in this program, you will develop the analytic tools to address the real world challenges of the criminal justice system and prepare yourself for the widest possible range of life ambitions and career goals.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

The international business studies (IBS) major is designed to prepare you to conduct business successfully around the world.

By placing equal emphasis on business and international studies, including advanced language training and a semester abroad, the IBS program will teach you to apply business principles to a region of the world in that region’s native language.

This specialized international training will give you excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers as markets continue to become more globalized.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

Then German Education may be the major for you! We offer a B.A. in German education which leads to a professional credential as a certified teacher of K-12 German.

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? In political science education you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers and how to teach political science content at the secondary level. You will learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning while working toward teaching certification. All majors are required to complete 30 credits of political science coursework including three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you will take upper-level courses across the political science catalog, related coursework in economics, history, geography and psychology and professional courses in education. You will also have a student teaching experience.
