You always hear students say, “Oh, Russian? No way! That’s too hard!” But it’s easier than you think! The alphabet looks daunting, but is easily conquerable. And we only have three verb tenses. What better news is there than that? And when you visit Russia you'll find that the warm, generous people will love you even if you only know a little bit of their language.

Students of the UD Russian Studies Program will not only work with the beautiful language but will also have the opportunity through a variety of courses to learn about this unique, fascinating culture and its long history. They do this through Russia's world-renowned literature and through other media such as film, the Internet, political essays and the arts. A working knowledge of Russian can help you in countless fields from government service, politics, economics, international business, the fuel industries, art history and even music, dance, ice skating and hockey.

Conserving the world’s wildlife and protecting the planet are truly grand challenges and the motivation behind all that you will do with this major. Scientists estimate that 200 to 2,000 species will become extinct each year. Choose to do more by being at the forefront of species conservation. Become part of the team that is working to understand the ecology and conservation of species worldwide and join in the great debate of why every species is important to the survival of our planet. Are you curious about how wild things work and the role they play in our world? If so, you have found your home. From insects to birds, reptiles to mammals, algae to oaks, this major examines all non-domesticated living things and the challenges they face sharing the planet with mankind.

Physicists investigate the fundamental properties of our physical world and develop a quantitative understanding of its phenomena with the scale of the investigations ranging from the sub-atomic to the transgalactic. Physics and astronomy have had a profound impact on how we perceive the universe and our position in it. The Secondary Science Education major at the University of Delaware offers students interested in teaching middle or high school science the opportunity to study their scientific area of interest—like physics—while also learning about and practicing the best teaching methods.

Studying environmental science at UD, you will learn how natural processes shape the natural environment and how humans impact nature. If you are passionate about the outdoors, the environmental science major can help you find solutions to environmental issues like habitat loss, sustainable development, water quality, biodiversity, climate change, renewable energy, and more. Environmental science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the atmosphere, ocean, earth, and ecosystems, which you then develop into a specialty through studying one of the concentrations listed below. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, environmental science jobs are predicted to grow 8% faster than the overall job market average between 2019 and 2029.

Studying the growth of emerging markets, consumer behavior, production schedules or portfolio optimization are important jobs in a free market economy. The ability to model loan defaults, price insurance products for life, health or property, or model uncertainty and risk in other economic activities, is a highly prized skill. The Mathematics and Economics program trains students to model uncertainty, with a focus on the financial services sector and the economy. The degree is also excellent preparation for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in Economics, as a strong background in mathematics is a must for admission into the top graduate programs.

Discover the fascination of Italy and Italian. Students enrolled in the Italian program will find it to be one of the most rewarding and positive linguistic and cultural experiences imaginable. A dedicated and expert faculty offer dynamic courses in language, literature, culture and civilization, film, history, politics and current events as well as classes in translation. On campus and through study abroad, master the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing – while immersing yourself in the culture of Italy. Prepare for graduate study or for a career in international business, journalism, translation, editing, marketing, travel, teaching or many other fields.

Participate in our study abroad programs which include winter session in the medieval city of Siena, summer in sunny Sorrento, or a semester program in the capital city of Rome. On campus, join the Circolo Italiano club to meet other Italian language students, brush up on your language skills and partake in numerous cultural activities. Outstanding students in the Italian program are awarded each year with induction into Gamma Kappa Alpha, the national Italian honors society.

Program Highlights

Hands-on Learning

• As a Lerner College financial planning and wealth management major, you will complete specialized courses in investments, insurance, income tax, retirement planning and estate planning. During your final semester of senior year you will complete the capstone course. The capstone course is a “real world” experience. You will work on 4 client cases throughout the semester, working closely with members of the Financial Planning Advisory Board to build financial plans for each. The board is a committee of 9 UD alumni who have built their own successful financial planning practices. This means you’ll get hands-on training that takes you through the full financial planning process from start to finish – before you even graduate.

Certified Financial Planning Accreditation

• The Certified Financial Planning (CFP) Board has accredited the Lerner College’s financial planning and wealth management program. Individuals who wish to take the CFP Exam must first complete a series of educational requirements. Graduates of the financial planning and wealth management major at UD will have satisfied the CFP education requirement. This means that our graduates can sit for the CFP Exam immediately after graduation.

Seminar Series

• You will have opportunities throughout the year to hear from finance industry professionals from public and private institutions such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve Bank and the nation’s top bank and trust companies like JPMorgan Chase, PNC and Wells Fargo.

• As a financial planning and wealth management student, you’ll have access to industry-specific research databases maintained by the Department of Finance. The most commonly used databases are Bloomberg, eMoney and Morningstar.

The marketing major prepares you to serve a vital role as the liaison between businesses and consumers.

As a marketer, you will identify wants and needs among diverse groups of people, select target markets and develop strategies for new and existing products. You will formulate plans for pricing, distributing and promoting these products and services while utilizing knowledge of branding, advertising, social media and new product development. This work requires careful analysis, creativity and action to tailor products and services to meet consumers’ needs.

If you like coming up with new ideas for products, advertisements and beating the competition, and if you want a career that involves solving challenging problems with analytical thinking and creativity, then marketing is the major for you.

Learning Chinese will allow students to experience a culture with a history of 5000 years and learn a language spoken by 1.36 billion people.  China has been playing an increasingly important and influential role globally. The ability to use Chinese and to employ knowledge about Chinese culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

The Fine Arts Program at UD—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—combines the best of creative research and hands-on experimentation.  Students have the opportunity to experience printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, video, photography, animation and drawing. After completing core courses, students have the freedom to choose their own pathway of study that enables them to develop into an active creative force; essentially our students are empowered to impact culture in a meaningful way and positively change the world.

Central to this student-centered approach is our one-on-one advising—all fine art majors and minors work in direct contact with our professionally active faculty through studio and lecture courses. Additionally, students engage with diverse communities through dynamic visiting artist talks, highly regarded study abroad courses, productive internships and frequent field trips to major art centers. Individual or shared studios are available for advanced students.
