Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Nutrition and Dietetics majors is for individuals who enjoy science and who believe that proper nutrition is a key aspect of health and well-being. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are qualified healthcare professionals trained to deliver evidence-based nutrition information and medical nutrition therapy to patients and to the public. The Nutrition and Dietetics major at the University of Delaware is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completion of a post-undergraduate accredited dietetic internship is the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

The B.A. in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of History; Political Science; and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Russia are all choices) within a broader transnational European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music or any other subject germane to a student’s chosen focus. Faculty guide students in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. Study abroad in Europe during a winter session or semester program is also encouraged. The combined effect is a body of knowledge that can launch careers in international business, law school, government agencies, NGOs and a range of graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

As a hospitality business management (HOSP) major, you’ll learn to deliver superior experiences and services to your clients. Our program is consistently ranked as one of the best hospitality management majors and is in the top 10 hospitality programs. We are large enough to lead, but small enough to care personally for each student.

The curriculum is based in business management, with specialized hospitality industry courses. You’ll learn by experience in our two on-campus learning labs: Vita Nova fine-dining restaurant and the award-winning Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware.

  • Over half of our students study abroad during the program. There are a variety of Winter and Summer session programs around the globe. You could also study for a semester at the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality in Switzerland.

Practical Experience

  • Nothing complements classroom-based learning like practical, on-the-job learning. The HOSP program requires 300 hours of paid hospitality-related work experience.
  • All classes are taught by faculty with real industry experience and academic credentials. And through the Blue Hen Alumni Network and events like the Hospitality Career Fair and the Paul Wise Executive in Residence Speaker Series, industry alumni, leaders and managers frequently visit campus to meet, mentor and hire our students. A variety of student clubs take our students to national industry conferences, providing networking opportunities with leaders and managers in the hospitality field.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Applied Music is for students intent on a career as a professional musician or music professor within higher education. The applied music degree track is designed to develop the highest level of musicianship on a primary instrument and to promote both scholarship and professionalism in the field. The B.M. in Applied Music is available to those students accepted to the appropriate studio by audition on a primary instrument (woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, piano, classical guitar, harp or voice).

Coursework for this major includes rigorous core sequences of music theory, aural skills, history, piano and private study courses, as well as upper-level theory electives such as contrapuntal writing, keyboard harmony, jazz theory and topic seminars. Additionally, applied music students learn music repertoire through advanced music literature courses and ensemble participation. Performance opportunities are available through large ensembles, fully-staged opera productions, chamber music programs, annual competitions, summer festivals and recitals.

The Department of Art Conservation is an international leader committed to educating professional conservators skilled in the examination, analysis, treatment and care of cultural heritage. The department consists of an undergraduate and master’s program in art conservation.

Connecting the arts, humanities and sciences, an undergraduate degree in art conservation prepares students for graduate-level study in the preservation of material culture, historic preservation, museum studies, library science and other related fields. This program, one of only five in the nation, offers students the opportunity to work with leading conservators and scientists while studying a range of cultural materials from archaeological to indigenous and contemporary from the UD Special Collections & Museum and collecting repositories worldwide.  Since 1971, our graduates have preserved iconic treasures from the Declaration of Independence to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the decorative interiors of the Forbidden City and most recently the George Floyd Memorial. Their work engages communities, strengthens cultural understanding and fosters knowledge and joy.

Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 11 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our civil engineering program prepares students with foundations in math, science, and engineering through required courses. Then, students take technical electives in the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, or ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in civil engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered.

Our faculty are active researchers, ensuring that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit.
