Economics places you at the juncture of social science, business and social policy. This fascinating subject helps explain the behavior of individuals, groups and organizations.

As an economics student, you will study how markets work to determine what is produced, how it is produced and how income is distributed. You will explore subjects like the role and impact of international trade, the effect of monopolies on the economy and the problems of unemployment and inflation.

This work will help you develop a strong understanding of businesses, markets and financial organizations. This means that you’ll graduate prepared for careers in the private, public and academic sectors.

Earn either a bachelor of science (B.S.) or a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in economics depending on your strengths in mathematics and quantitative skills (B.S.) or foreign language (B.A.).

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? In political science education you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers and how to teach political science content at the secondary level. You will learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning while working toward teaching certification. All majors are required to complete 30 credits of political science coursework including three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you will take upper-level courses across the political science catalog, related coursework in economics, history, geography and psychology and professional courses in education. You will also have a student teaching experience.

The B.A. in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of History; Political Science; and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Russia are all choices) within a broader transnational European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music or any other subject germane to a student’s chosen focus. Faculty guide students in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. Study abroad in Europe during a winter session or semester program is also encouraged. The combined effect is a body of knowledge that can launch careers in international business, law school, government agencies, NGOs and a range of graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in Political Science and International Relations. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in Political Science exposes students to the theories, institutions and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. The combination of these two areas allows students to enhance their skills and gain a more worldly perspective by studying both the language and political relations of the Spanish-speaking world.

The sport management major is designed to prepare you for a successful career in the multi-billion dollar sport industry.

As a sport management major, you’ll take courses that are specific to the sport management discipline, as well as business courses that will help you to develop quantitative analysis skills and an understanding of essential business concepts.

As a sport management graduate, you’ll find diverse and exciting career opportunities. These include careers in professional and minor league sports, intercollegiate and high school athletics, international and national sport governing bodies, sport agencies, sport facilities, businesses that use sports to market their products and sport marketing and event management firms.

• The Lerner College sport management program will help you to go above and beyond your passion for sport by challenging you academically and providing you with practical experience outside the classroom. As part of this experience, you’ll complete a nine-credit internship during your senior year.

Volunteering

• As a Lerner College sport management student, you will have access to a number of volunteer opportunities with the UD Athletic Department and other sport organizations in the area. Our goal is for you to gain as much practical experience as possible while developing professional networks within the sport industry.

As an operations management (OM) major, you’ll learn about the processes that companies use to transform resources into goods and services.

As an OM professional, you’ll help companies make important decisions about product creation, development, production and distribution while focusing on efficiency and balancing supply and demand. This requires a mastery of technology, data analysis and critical decision-making.

If you enjoy solving problems using the latest technology, utilizing math to improve real-world situations, analyzing data and explaining it to others or learning valuable new decision-making skills, then the OM major is for you.

Cybersecurity engineers design hardened systems, build secure applications and networks, analyze data breaches and identify vulnerabilities in cyberspace, confronting emerging threats and driving technological innovation. UD Cybersecurity Engineering graduates are in high demand as the cybersecurity industry rapidly grows every year. Most graduates pursue exciting careers in the private sector, including technology companies, banking institutions, and telecommunication providers, as well as government agencies, research centers, and the defense industry. Alternatively, cybersecurity engineering graduates choose to pursue graduate education, including master’s or Ph.D. degrees, as well as attend business, medical or law schools. Students who earn advanced degrees in engineering usually advance into leadership positions within their discipline, or pursue a career in advanced research in industry or academia.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

History majors at the University of Delaware explore the past while acquiring skills to shape the future. The major prepares graduates for successful careers in fields from consulting to government, education to the arts and from museums to management. Alums report that our program taught them to analyze complexity and prepared them to communicate their conclusions clearly and convincingly. Effective analysis of documents, objects and ideas from the past requires “historical empathy” — reading with an open mind in ways that foster deep understanding of the perspectives and motivations of others. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.
