Program Highlights

Hands-on Learning

• As a Lerner College financial planning and wealth management major, you will complete specialized courses in investments, insurance, income tax, retirement planning and estate planning. During your final semester of senior year you will complete the capstone course. The capstone course is a “real world” experience. You will work on 4 client cases throughout the semester, working closely with members of the Financial Planning Advisory Board to build financial plans for each. The board is a committee of 9 UD alumni who have built their own successful financial planning practices. This means you’ll get hands-on training that takes you through the full financial planning process from start to finish – before you even graduate.

Certified Financial Planning Accreditation

• The Certified Financial Planning (CFP) Board has accredited the Lerner College’s financial planning and wealth management program. Individuals who wish to take the CFP Exam must first complete a series of educational requirements. Graduates of the financial planning and wealth management major at UD will have satisfied the CFP education requirement. This means that our graduates can sit for the CFP Exam immediately after graduation.

Seminar Series

• You will have opportunities throughout the year to hear from finance industry professionals from public and private institutions such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve Bank and the nation’s top bank and trust companies like JPMorgan Chase, PNC and Wells Fargo.

• As a financial planning and wealth management student, you’ll have access to industry-specific research databases maintained by the Department of Finance. The most commonly used databases are Bloomberg, eMoney and Morningstar.

Conserving insects, the foundation of the world’s biodiversity, is the first step towards protecting the planet. Insects are becoming extinct faster than any other group of species. From their role as major pest species threatening global food security to their use as a nutritious protein source that could help feed the world, the integrity and maintenance of insect diversity is one of the grand challenges facing coming generations. Join our Insect Ecology and Conservation major and experience a hands-on education that will empower you to make a difference in the stewardship of our planet.

The criminal justice major offers a liberal arts approach to crime, law and justice that integrates theory, research and legal analysis. It emphasizes the history of crime and the criminal justice system, the structure of its institutions and problems faced by professionals and leaders at every level, from the halls of Congress to the urban police beat. Criminal justice is a multidisciplinary field that draws together perspectives from sociology, political science, psychology, history, philosophy and law in an effort to understand major issues surrounding the causes of criminal behavior, inequalities in the criminal justice system and the organization of criminal justice institutions. As a student in this program, you will develop the analytic tools to address the real world challenges of the criminal justice system and prepare yourself for the widest possible range of life ambitions and career goals.

What does a French Major study?  Of course, you will acquire the skills needed to effectively communicate with French and Francophone speakers. But what will you communicate? Our department offers engaging courses in French and Francophone literature, culture, civilization, theater, business and cinema. Plus, study abroad for the opportunity to take courses in politics, art, economics, fashion, photography, tourism and gastronomy. Your study will prepare you to compete and succeed in a wide variety of professions while using the language of over 200 million people on five continents.

Studying the growth of emerging markets, consumer behavior, production schedules or portfolio optimization are important jobs in a free market economy. The ability to model loan defaults, price insurance products for life, health or property, or model uncertainty and risk in other economic activities, is a highly prized skill. The Mathematics and Economics program trains students to model uncertainty, with a focus on the financial services sector and the economy. The degree is also excellent preparation for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in Economics, as a strong background in mathematics is a must for admission into the top graduate programs.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music provides students an opportunity to synthesize intensive study of music with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. The program includes training in music theory, music history/literature, performance ensembles and applied music. Rigorous coursework in music is balanced by significant opportunities for training, research and development in other academic areas. This program is particularly well suited to students with broad ranging artistic and academic interests, and who wish to utilize their music education to advance their careers in unique directions.

For almost a century, the University of Delaware’s Physics and Astronomy program has provided a world class undergraduate physics education that meets the goals of STEM education. Our graduates join a variety of physical science and engineering graduate programs, enter medical school, find employment in industry and teach in high schools all over the country.

Information Systems is an evolving scientific area of study that bridges the gap between business and computer science.

Networks of computers extend human brainpower by creating modes of communication and record keeping that are at once more complex and more convenient than ever before. To be effective, these systems must aid and enhance our business, government and service organizations, which requires a careful understanding of the factors controlling human interactions, as well as the technical potential and limitations of computer systems.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers students a Bachelor of Science major in Information Systems (INSY-BS), which combines business and information technology subjects. The major addresses student demand for courses oriented toward the design of new software systems for business and consumer needs. Students enrolled in the major must fulfill a set of major courses along with 1) a set of business courses (referred to as the business core) and 2) a set of information systems courses (referred to as the information systems core).

The business core emphasizes management and marketing issues. Students are prepared for careers in management and financial matters through courses in accounting, finance, operations management, organizational behavior, and marketing.

The information core stresses the use of computing technology in solving business problems.

Course work includes technological problem solving and project management, as well as a selection of advanced computer science courses designed to prepare students for careers in programming, business telecommunication networks, system development, database systems, and software engineering.
