What does a French Major study?  Of course, you will acquire the skills needed to effectively communicate with French and Francophone speakers. But what will you communicate? Our department offers engaging courses in French and Francophone literature, culture, civilization, theater, business and cinema. Plus, study abroad for the opportunity to take courses in politics, art, economics, fashion, photography, tourism and gastronomy. Your study will prepare you to compete and succeed in a wide variety of professions while using the language of over 200 million people on five continents.

Materials engineers play a vital role in solving today’s most challenging energy and environmental problems, and the outlook for materials science engineers is incredibly promising. Engineering is one of the highest-paying industries for college graduates, and the job sector of materials science engineers is expected to see substantial growth in the coming decades. Developments in nanotechnology and in the use of biomedical materials, high-performance textiles, composites and sustainable materials are creating job opportunities.

Materials Science and Engineering uses the principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering to develop better, safer and more sustainable materials. Everything we see and use is made from materials derived from the earth, and advanced materials are essential to nearly every modern technology. Materials engineers study the structures and properties of all types of materials – metals, polymers, ceramics, semiconductors and composites – and develop new ways to make them using nanotechnology and advanced manufacturing techniques.

From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline.

UD’s computer science curriculum emphasizes software development and computer theory with the goal that students learn how computers are used to solve real-life problems. Students develop excellent programming skills as they build a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science and software engineering. The research of the faculty guides upper-level course offerings, and there are ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects. Students are encouraged to explore how other subject areas impact and are impacted by computer science through a concentration in a related discipline.

We are committed to providing students with access to the most advanced computer technology available and maintaining research laboratories for areas requiring extensive experimental studies. Students also have access to our high-performance clusters for coursework and research in parallel computing, networking, artificial intelligence, and multimedia.

The criminal justice major offers a liberal arts approach to crime, law and justice that integrates theory, research and legal analysis. It emphasizes the history of crime and the criminal justice system, the structure of its institutions and problems faced by professionals and leaders at every level, from the halls of Congress to the urban police beat. Criminal justice is a multidisciplinary field that draws together perspectives from sociology, political science, psychology, history, philosophy and law in an effort to understand major issues surrounding the causes of criminal behavior, inequalities in the criminal justice system and the organization of criminal justice institutions. As a student in this program, you will develop the analytic tools to address the real world challenges of the criminal justice system and prepare yourself for the widest possible range of life ambitions and career goals.

You always hear students say, “Oh, Russian? No way! That’s too hard!” But it’s easier than you think! The alphabet looks daunting, but is easily conquerable. And we only have three verb tenses. What better news is there than that? And when you visit Russia you'll find that the warm, generous people will love you even if you only know a little bit of their language.

Students of the UD Russian Studies Program will not only work with the beautiful language but will also have the opportunity through a variety of courses to learn about this unique, fascinating culture and its long history. They do this through Russia's world-renowned literature and through other media such as film, the Internet, political essays and the arts. A working knowledge of Russian can help you in countless fields from government service, politics, economics, international business, the fuel industries, art history and even music, dance, ice skating and hockey.

Learning Chinese will allow students to experience a culture with a history of 5000 years and learn a language spoken by 1.36 billion people.  China has been playing an increasingly important and influential role globally. The ability to use Chinese and to employ knowledge about Chinese culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

As a hospitality business management (HOSP) major, you’ll learn to deliver superior experiences and services to your clients. Whether you manage a hotel, food and beverage operation or country club; own a restaurant; or plan weddings and conferences, your degree will equip you with the skills you need for a rewarding career in hospitality.

Our program is consistently ranked as one of the best hospitality management majors and is in the top 10 hospitality programs. We are large enough to lead, but small enough to care personally for each student.

The curriculum is based in business management, with specialized hospitality industry courses. You’ll learn by experience in our two on-campus learning labs: Vita Nova fine-dining restaurant and the award-winning Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware.

Global Experiences

• Over half of our students study abroad during the program. There are a variety of Winter and Summer session programs around the globe. You could also study for a semester at the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality in Switzerland.

Practical Experience

• Nothing complements classroom-based learning like practical, on-the-job learning. The HOSP program requires 300 hours of paid hospitality-related work experience.
• All classes are taught by faculty with real industry experience and academic credentials. And through the Blue Hen Alumni Network and events like the Hospitality Career Fair and the Paul Wise Executive in Residence Speaker Series, industry alumni, leaders and managers frequently visit campus to meet, mentor and hire our students. A variety of student clubs take our students to national industry conferences, providing networking opportunities with leaders and managers in the hospitality field.

A multilingual brain is more agile and better able to solve problems and conflicts. Language learners demonstrate superior cognitive performance throughout their lives.

Over half of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual, while only one in five U.S. citizens speaks a language other than English. Knowledge of other languages and cultures gives our graduates a competitive advantage in any career, and is highly valued in international business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths in teaching, entertainment and media, government, travel, financial services or international business. Some students enter careers with international or non-governmental organizations such as the International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

There is a critical shortage of qualified middle and high school mathematics teachers in schools in our region and across the nation. Mathematics is an important and challenging subject, and teachers well-trained in mathematics and the teaching of mathematics can make mathematics accessible to all middle and high school students with different needs and abilities. This can be a very fulfilling, emotionally satisfying and financially secure career for motivated students. Both the B.A. and B.S. degree programs in mathematics education lead to teacher certification; the B.S. degree may be more suitable for students who have taken or plan to take many credits in math and science, while the B.A. degree is ideal for students who are interested in achieving breadth in the liberal arts.

Anthropologists study us. We learn how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. Anthropologists study people and primates face-to-face and we study past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. We examine the origins of humans as cultural beings; the processes that create particular cultures; and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others. In our globalized world, we ask how the local influences and shapes the regional, national and global, and in turn, how the global affects the local. Every career today requires understanding of other cultures, and how they influence our complicated, rapidly changing, interconnected human experience. There’s no limit to where you can go with that kind of understanding of our world and its peoples.
