The B.A. in Art—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—provides the same foundation in art making through its Core studio courses that B.F.A. students receive along with additional upper level studio courses to further hone the student’s artistic skills. It encourages an interdisciplinary approach with many students earning a minor or second major from departments across the college and university. The B.A. provides an opportunity for students to develop highly personal portfolios that can incorporate art and design with work from other disciplines with very marketable results. The B.A. also reflects developments in Fine Art involving more environmentally and socially engaged art practices, technology or performance-based work, as well as artworks emphasizing academic research.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. Conserving the world’s wildlife and protecting the planet are truly grand challenges and the motivation behind all that you will do with this major. Scientists estimate that 200 to 2,000 species will become extinct each year. Choose to do more by being at the forefront of species conservation. Become part of the team that is working to understand the ecology and conservation of species worldwide and join in the great debate of why every species is important to the survival of our planet. Are you curious about how wild things work and the role they play in our world? If so, you have found your home. From insects to birds, reptiles to mammals, algae to oaks, this major examines all non-domesticated living things and the challenges they face sharing the planet with mankind.

Biotechnology uses knowledge obtained about organisms at the molecular level to inform diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, create new treatments using stem- and gene-therapies, produce novel biopharmaceuticals and help address global problems such as world hunger through genetically modified plants. The Program in Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BAMBB) will prepare students to work in a wide variety of biotechnology-related settings. With a locked-step curriculum, the program will emphasize hands-on training and practical experience, while providing a solid foundation in the basic subjects from which biotechnology evolved. Faculty from academia and industry will give students a broad perspective of biotechnology’s applications and possibilities. Integrated into the curriculum are required practical internships, where students will gain additional experience in real world laboratory settings.

The B.S. in Applied Mathematics allows students to gain depth in mathematics as well as one of twenty-one areas of application in science and engineering such as Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Physics and Statistics. This degree prepares students planning a career in a field requiring strength in mathematics as well as in an area of application. Students considering a double major in Mathematics and a related area are advised to consider this program.

As a hospitality business management (HOSP) major, you’ll learn to deliver superior experiences and services to your clients. Whether you manage a hotel, food and beverage operation or country club; own a restaurant; or plan weddings and conferences, your degree will equip you with the skills you need for a rewarding career in hospitality.

Our program is consistently ranked as one of the best hospitality management majors and is in the top 10 hospitality programs. We are large enough to lead, but small enough to care personally for each student.

The curriculum is based in business management, with specialized hospitality industry courses. You’ll learn by experience in our two on-campus learning labs: Vita Nova fine-dining restaurant and the award-winning Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware.

Global Experiences

• Over half of our students study abroad during the program. There are a variety of Winter and Summer session programs around the globe. You could also study for a semester at the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality in Switzerland.

Practical Experience

• Nothing complements classroom-based learning like practical, on-the-job learning. The HOSP program requires 300 hours of paid hospitality-related work experience.
• All classes are taught by faculty with real industry experience and academic credentials. And through the Blue Hen Alumni Network and events like the Hospitality Career Fair and the Paul Wise Executive in Residence Speaker Series, industry alumni, leaders and managers frequently visit campus to meet, mentor and hire our students. A variety of student clubs take our students to national industry conferences, providing networking opportunities with leaders and managers in the hospitality field.

Anthropologists study how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. They study people and primates face-to-face as well as past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. They examine the origins of humans as cultural beings, the processes that create particular cultures and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others.

The secondary social studies education program comprises seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. There is a critical shortage of qualified middle and high school mathematics teachers in schools in our region and across the nation. Mathematics is an important and challenging subject, and teachers well-trained in mathematics and the teaching of mathematics can make mathematics accessible to all middle and high school students with different needs and abilities. This can be a very fulfilling, emotionally satisfying and financially secure career for motivated students. Both the B.A. and B.S. degree programs in mathematics education lead to teacher certification; the B.S. degree may be more suitable for students who have taken or plan to take many credits in math and science, while the B.A. degree is ideal for students who are interested in achieving breadth in the liberal arts.

The English major offers a practical, multidisciplinary, and flexible array of courses that prepare students for a variety of career paths, including business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and multi-media production. Our students learn to write clearly, to speak persuasively, and to read with care and precision, all qualities required for the leadership roles of many professions.
