With an M.A. in history, you’ll gain an advanced understanding of how societies, cultures, economics, politics, science and arts of the past have shaped today’s world. Our Master of Arts degree is highly flexible, so you can tailor your program to meet your needs. Our faculty are experts in a wide range of times, places and subjects, with particular strengths in cultural history, women's history, military history, the history of religion, Atlantic history, and the history of science and technology. In this graduate program, you’ll be trained in methods of historical research and writing that will prepare you for a professional career or advanced studies.

The human development and family studies M.S. degree program will prepare you for work in a variety of human services settings, or for further study at the doctoral level. You’ll concentrate on child or adolescent development, combining your studies with in-depth experience through a closely supervised teaching, research or advocacy practicum, as well as internship opportunities. Our program will help you contribute to the well-being of individuals and families through knowledge, teaching, leadership and professional practice.

Marine biologists seek to understand and protect marine and estuarine ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them. A graduate degree in marine biology prepares you for a successful career in science, technology, education and public service.

While completing the philosophy major, students may select the option in Philosophy of Business, Innovation and Technology. This option provides official recognition for those who choose to emphasize the study of the relationships between markets, technology and human well-being. Students will choose courses in the philosophy of artificial intelligence, evolution, neuroscience, biotechnology, business ethics, economic policy, environmental ethics and other high impact subjects. 

The M.S. degree gives you an understanding of physics’ basic theoretical structures as preparation for conducting cutting-edge research. You will learn to apply advanced research methodologies and facilitate deeper student thinking in the areas of electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, and advanced mathematical methods. The graduate program in physics includes a capstone experience, which can be a master's thesis or project. Graduates of this master’s program are equipped for successful careers in research and development in business, industry, government and education/academia, and are prepared for doctoral programs.

The music performance degree program is designed for students who want to develop their skills as vocalists or instrumentalists in order to pursue a career or graduate degree in music. You’ll build a solid foundation in music history, theory and analysis, while also training in voice, piano or another instrument of your choice. The program places heavy emphasis on performance study and is great preparation for master and doctoral degree programs.

The Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations (AMC) option balances language study with the opportunity for students to select from a wide range of courses covering many aspects of the Greek and Roman worlds, as well as the neighboring peoples in Europe, North Africa and the Near East. The flexibility of this option makes it especially attractive for students who wish to double major in another subject. It is generally not suitable, however, for those who wish to pursue related graduate study or a career in teaching Latin. AMC majors can, however, supplement the requirements with additional coursework to keep these options open.

The bachelor of science degree in physics prepares students for professional work as physicists, and is the first step toward graduate work in physics. It is also excellent preparation for graduate programs in medicine, law, or engineering, as well as for technical jobs in industry. The required courses are those typically necessary for admission to graduate study in physics or astronomy. The interdisciplinary options require fewer physics courses combined with a concentration in another area (chemistry or materials science). The astronomy option emphasizes courses that help prepare a student for advanced studies in astronomy.

The basic goal of the program is the development of behavioral scientists who have a broad knowledge of psychology and can carry out sound research in an area of specialization.

Areas in which the student may specialize are brain, behavior and cognition; developmental psychology; or social psychology/personality. The department does not offer training in clinical or counseling psychology.

Most entering students have a BA/BS in economics or environmental/agricultural economics. Incoming students should have, at a minimum, coursework in intermediate microeconomic theory, econometrics, and calculus. Areas of interest include agricultural economics, community and regional economics, land economics, water economics, and environmental economics.
