To prepare you for this highly collaborative field, the University of New Haven’s B.S. in Biochemistry program integrates courses in biology and chemistry to give you a holistic view of how chemical interactions influence biological systems. In addition:

A paramedic has a level of knowledge, skill, and treatment capabilities that are significantly beyond those of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and which can dramatically improve a patient’s outcome at the hospital. In response to the need for these uniquely trained emergency medical care professionals, the University of New Haven developed its paramedicine program. This program will prepare you to become a new breed of first responder – one who holds dual certification as both a firefighter and as a paramedic.

Hands-on learning will be a major part of your education. You’ll ride along with ambulance services and take patients’ vitals. You’ll practice doing chest compressions and starting IV lines on high-fidelity mannequins. You’ll become part of teams who care for patients in whatever medical emergency unfolds. The goal of the paramedicine program is to make your education as real-world as it gets.

Through this program, offered in conjunction with Yale New Haven Hospital, you will also:

• Become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
• Gain more than 700 hours of clinical and internship experience through multiple models of EMS services, including hospital-based and fire-based
• Expand your knowledge through classes in anatomy and physiology at the Yale University School of Medicine
• Become eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic exam at the completion of your studies
• Have a chance to join the Pre-Health Professions (PHP) Scholars Program, which can serve as a launching pad for pursuing a career or further study in healthcare

While Homeland Security deals with threats from within the U.S., national security combats terrorist threats that come from abroad. One of only a small number of such programs in the United States, our master’s program in fire and explosion investigation offers 39 credits* of interdisciplinary coursework in fire/arson investigation, emergency management, public safety, and more. Students in the program study alongside leading professionals in the fire service including current and former fire and police chiefs, homeland security executives, private investigators, and insurance agents. Successful alumni have moved on to leadership positions in local fire departments, state and federal emergency agencies, and private firms.

Students take required courses in topics such as the chemistry of fires, dynamics of structural fires, and arson analysis. Candidates will also chose from a series of electives that explores issues, including fire and building codes, fire scene reconstruction, terrorism, and industrial fire protection.

Our MPA program provides students with the core skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful professional in Public Service, as well as offering students an opportunity to complete a concentration in one of five timely areas: 1) Municipal Management, 2) Public Financial Management, 3) Public Safety, 4) Nonprofit Management, and 5) Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Our MPA accommodates the needs of students new to the field as well as those already working in public service.
