This interdisciplinary program is designed to give graduates an understanding of the African and African diasporic experiences in both local and global contexts and incorporate culturally distinct perspectives in analysis of social and cultural phenomena. Upon completion of the program graduates will be able to analyze and compare knowledge systems and practices within African and African diasporic populations. MA graduates will gain skills in critiquing policies with respect to impacts upon communities of African descent both currently and in historical contexts. The MA will teach students to reflect upon and apply awareness of African and African diasporic experiences and theory to individual professional practices, communications, and interactions. Furthermore, MA graduates will gain quantitative and qualitative methodological skills for identifying and examining challenges affecting people of African descent as well as strengths and resources within African and African diasporic communities. Finally, students will utilize theoretical frameworks from Black Studies to design research-based strategies, programs, and recommendations to address challenges affecting people of African descent.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre Practices supports engaged theatre practice that meets the social and cultural challenges of our twenty-first century society.

Our innovative curriculum invites students to begin by building core theatre skills, then gradually applying them to a range of projects, settings, and populations. This culminates in in-depth application of these skills through internships, community placements and a Capstone. The BA in Theatre Practice supports a professional track for students seeking a Wisconsin Theatre Teaching license in K-12 Theatre Education. It also offers students the option to earn a Cultures and Communities (C&C) certificate and is the home of the Arts and Social Entrepreneurship (A&SE) Certificate Program.

The BA in Theatre Practice engages students in focusing their study on educational and social justice theatre, devising and performing new work, storytelling, dramaturgy, directing, playwriting, and arts and social entrepreneurship.

Psychology is a science that provides critical insights into human behavior. Psychologists investigate how behavior is modified in the face of psychiatric disorders or disease and how the brain gives rise to the rich tapestry of behaviors that govern our day-to-day experiences.

A psychology major gives you much career flexibility because of its emphasis on reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, research and writing. In addition to becoming a counselor or therapist, many students go into human resources, sales, marketing, business management, law, medicine, social work, real estate, social services, and more – all fields that require comprehensive knowledge of human behavior.

The market for professional singers is changing—opera singers are performing in musicals, Broadway performers are singing operas, and pop singer training is improving dramatically.  UWM is out in front of these changes with our BFA: Versatile Voice, a program that is broad enough to cover many genres and flexible enough to reflect each student’s interest.

The Master of Architecture, the first professional degree offered by the Department of Architecture, is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The degree program requires two to three years of graduate study, depending on the applicant’s previous academic background and qualifications. It offers a wide range of courses, with particular strengths in the areas of architectural design and integrated practice, ecological/sustainable design, digital design and fabrication, preservation, urban design, and design as a response to the physical, cultural, and social environment.

The Computer Engineering major is offered through the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments at UWM. Computer engineering pertains to the design, implementation and maintenance of hardware and software components of computers and computer-controlled equipment.

Our program provides students with a broad and strong technical background in the field. It also helps students develop a solid grounding in computing, mathematics and engineering. Students will learn to apply these theoretical principles to design hardware, software, networks, and computerized equipment for diverse application domains.

Our program emphasizes a conceptual fine art practice through the production of darkroom, digital, and hybrid work. Courses integrate socially situated projects with an understanding of both contemporary and historical visual culture by developing a vocabulary for effective communication within the photographic medium.

The study of Philosophy can be challenging because it asks students to critically examine very fundamental questions about what it means to be human - behavior, values, ethics, logic, aesthetics. Some describe it as "thinking in slow motion" because of the way it explores in depth the human experience.

Students choose philosophy because it instills a lifelong love and quest for knowledge, it imparts a disciplined and systematic way of thinking, and it enhances critical and analytical capacities. Most graduates of philosophy describe the great personal reward that comes from exploring the great thinkers of the past in the context of modern issues. But, they also passionately value the career skills that they developed - how to read and comprehend difficult text; how to understand different interpretations of information and assess opposing viewpoints; how to craft a clear and logical position on an issue in writing and orally; and how to make connections between smaller, seemingly disparate details and the big picture.

In high school, your Geography class probably focused on maps and locations. But, the field is so much broader than that. Geography bridges the physical and human world, using scientific methods to explain and predict people's impact on the planet and the planet's impact on people.

UWM's Geography students graduate with an exceptional ability to intellectually and technologically process spatial data about space, place, and people and how they relate to each other. They understand how to make sense of seemingly unrelated pieces of information by bringing together facts and diverse values. They also are adept at presenting information visually - for example, maps!
