The Department of Film Studies' BA program focuses on the history, theory and criticism of film and television. Students learn how to critically analyze analyze the impact of film and television on individuals and society; make connections between media, historical themes and cultural change; and compare different formats. Film and media cross time periods and locations, languages and cultures. The courses that a well-rounded Film Studies student will take are equally as diverse. The major blends courses in Film Studies with classes from English, Art History, Comparative Literature, History, Religious Studies, French, Italian, Japanese, and other languages. UWM students have the advantage of being in the heart of the largest city in Wisconsin, home to a lively art house movie scene, a growing independent film industry, and a thriving cinematic culture.

Students who are more interested in film and video production process and who are looking to become a filmmaker or videographer may wish to also explore the majors offered through UWM's Peck School of the Arts.

The Department of Linguistics offers master’s and doctoral degrees and a graduate certificate in Adult/University-Level Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The Department of History offers MA and PhD programs that prepare students for careers in teaching, in historical research, and in archives, historical agencies, museums, libraries and government. The Department offers a wide array of geographically, chronologically and thematically defined courses.

Electrical engineering graduates pursue careers in fields such as energy generation and transmission, renewable energy, power electronics, bio-imaging and devices, signal and image processing, communications, optical and photonic circuits and devices, controls and automation, and many other areas.

This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the major performing skill in percussion. A student must successfully pass an audition at an advanced level of performance to qualify for admission to the program.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance Percussion must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.

This concentration is designed primarily for students who wish to do advanced study in music history and literature. For some students, the degree is a terminal degree (for example, music teachers who may wish to pursue graduate work in music history rather than in music education), while for others it serves as preparation for the study of musicology at the doctoral level.

Our program includes a multi-cultural history of textiles, contemporary fiber artists, and the integration of traditional techniques with digital media. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of fibers and its visual language, while learning its traditional processes and contemporary applications.

Student learning is measured more than ever before, and that means that the education field needs professionals who have expertise in educational statistics and measurement.

You’ll find our graduates working in universities, state and federal agencies, test publishing organizations, school systems, state departments of education, marketing research companies and research centers, among other settings.

The Educational Statistics and Measurement concentration is designed to provide students with the knowledge necessary to execute research and evaluate and critique existing research. Course work exposes students to the general principles of inferential statistics, research methodology and experimental design, psychometrics, and categorical and qualitative research methods.

The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology offers a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy that prepares students to become occupational therapists. During the program, students engage in graduate-level instruction embedded in the theory, research, and clinical underpinnings required to become evidence-based occupational therapy practitioners. Students may select a thesis option or project option in pursuing this degree. Students who are interested can choose to combine elective courses from the OT program with other courses on campus to receive the transcript-designated concentration in assistive technology and accessible design and/or ergonomics.

Assistive Technology and Accessible Design
The Concentration in Assistive Technology and Accessible Design is an interdisciplinary program designed to meet the demand for assistive technology and accessible design specialists. The College of Health Science’s Departments of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology and Communication Sciences Disorders, along with the School of Education’s Department of Teaching and Learning, collaborate on the course offerings. The concentration emphasizes technologies for disability.

Mathematics is the international language of science and technology. Much of the subject matter in engineering and the natural sciences, as well as some social sciences such as economics, is presented in mathematical terms. Mathematical and statistical techniques are vital in fields that usually are not considered mathematical, such as biology, psychology, and political science.

Some students come to mathematical sciences with the intention of teaching in high school or college or pursuing research in mathematics. Some are attracted to mathematics for its own sake, for the beauty, discipline, logic, and problem-solving challenges. Other students pursue mathematics in order to achieve deeper understanding in their own areas of study.
