Civil Engineering is a profession that deals with the infrastructure of society and impacts your everyday life. From the roads and bridges you use every day to the drinking water that comes out of your tap at home, civil engineers work to develop safe, efficient and sustainable ways to continually improve our infrastructure.

Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering utilizes the disciplines of rock and soil mechanics to investigate subsurface and geologic conditions. These investigations are used to design and build foundations, earth structures and pavement sub-grades.

The Physics Department exhibits exceptional strength in several areas. We invite applications from able students interested in experimental and theoretical surface physics and condensed matter physics; in structural biophysics and protein dynamics and function; in quantum field theory, cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, and gravitational-wave/multimessenger astronomy; in medical imaging.  The primary goal of our graduate education is the training of creative research scientists.

This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the major performing skill.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance String Emphasis must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance prepares students to teach participatory movement traditions in community settings, and to lead community groups in creating and performing their own dances and movement rituals. Community-based service-learning experiences provide many opportunities to realize these goals. Many Dance BA students pursue a double major at UWM; the service-learning component provides an opportunity to integrate the content of the two areas of study.

The Helen Bader School of Social Welfare (HBSSW) offers a program of graduate studies in social work. As a department in an urban research university, the mission of the Department of Social Work is to promote positive change through social work research, scholarship, education, and community partnerships. The Department promotes the values of the social work profession through a commitment to social justice and diversity, a dedication to public service, and an emphasis on individual and community well-being. The goal of the MSW program is to prepare graduates with specialized knowledge and skills for advanced practice and leadership with diverse populations and communities.

The Graduate Concentration in Integrated Health Care Leadership provides deep knowledge in topics that will help students navigate the increasingly complex health care industry environment, such as leadership and team building, health care accounting, law, and ethics, health care administration and delivery systems, managed care and integrated health networks, and strategic management in health care organizations.

The Lubar School of Business STEM-Designated Master of Business Administration (MBA) provides the specialized business skills needed to meet an individual's career goals. Lubar offers a major metropolitan learning laboratory where dynamic individuals, applied project work, and superb business connections translate into a rewarding life-long career.

Faculty are connected to leading-edge business knowledge using real-world business challenges. There is an emphasis on critical and analytical thinking, collaboration with fellow students, and networking with successful executives and professional inside and outside the classroom.

The Master of Architecture, the first professional degree offered by the Department of Architecture, is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The degree program requires two to three years of graduate study, depending on the applicant’s previous academic background and qualifications. It offers a wide range of courses, with particular strengths in the areas of architectural design and integrated practice, ecological/sustainable design, digital design and fabrication, preservation, urban design, and design as a response to the physical, cultural, and social environment.

This undergraduate degree prepares students to teach art both in schools and in the community. Once students are admitted to the Art & Design program, they can apply to the Art Education program through ART ED 227 (see Advance to Major). In addition to satisfying the core curriculum, art education students also must take required art history and critical thinking courses, and three education courses. They are required to take studio courses from both 2D and 3D disciplines, and to focus their choices of studio electives to develop an emphasis in an area. In addition to top-notch studio preparation in a wide range of media, our students focus on urban issues and art education for social justice. Theory is integrated into practical early field and student teaching experiences. Throughout the program, assessment is aligned with the requirements for licensure under “PI-34,” the state law governing certification in Wisconsin.

The Music, BFA: Music Composition and Technology program fosters development in instrumental, vocal, and electroacoustic composition, with an emphasis on contemporary and experimental techniques.
