Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Yeshiva College. The Sociology Department at Yeshiva College offers both a major and a minor in sociology, as well as minors in public health and criminology. A sociology degree is excellent preparation for graduate study or a career in law, criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, research, public administration, business, medicine, counseling, health care management or other service professions.

The mission of the Sociology program is to prepare students for employment and/or to pursue advanced studies in various fields ranging from journalism, political analysis, market research, law, medicine, psychology, sociology or social work to just name a few. Students will be prepared for these careers by studying social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociology majors will learn to investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how these structures constrain peoples’ lives in different ways. Our program will teach students to analyze a wide range of social institutions like law, family, medicine, education, mass media and religion. Sociology majors will learn to analyze social institutions by focusing on structures like race, gender and class. Familiarizing students with social theories will help students understand how these structures stratify societies. Despite all this diversity in our field, the discipline of sociology has a powerful coherence that comes from a collective dedication to developing theoretical principles about social life and testing them with empirical evidence.

Whether you want to continue professionally in fields such as law or business, enter into more traditional areas like Jewish education or Jewish communal service, or pursue the degree out of intellectual curiosity and personal interest, the program is for those who want to be challenged and inspired.

The study of biology is the ideal preparation for students planning to enter professions such as medicine and other health-related fields that require competence in the biologic sciences. Students also select this curriculum because it provides the background to understand basic biological issues in health and disease, as well as environmental concerns.

Biology courses at Yeshiva College keep pace with the ever-changing nature of biological science. Courses are offered in ecology, cell structure, microbiology and immunology, molecular biology, and genetics (emphasizing our newfound ability to analyze and manipulate the genome). Honors courses and guided research projects encourage independent research.

The Music Department offers course work and performing opportunities in Western classical music and jazz at the undergraduate level.

A fundamental guideline for all students pursuing the major and minor in music is that they should have a healthy balance between academic courses (history, theory, style analysis) and performance courses (chamber ensembles, jazz ensemble, applied music lessons). The study of music and the experience of music should reinforce each other. In this same light, music theory courses (harmony) place an emphasis on writing music.

The Music Department strongly encourages its majors to extend and refine their performance abilities during their student years by enrolling in at least one performance-oriented course each term that they are students. This means that many music majors (and minors, too) frequently take more courses in music performance ensembles and lessons than they are allowed to apply toward their major.

The Katz School's master's in Speech-Language Pathology, based in New York City, is one of the few SLP programs in the country specializing in the medical aspects of speech-language pathology. Our M.S. in SLP takes a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating speech, language and communication cases across the lifespan.

Through our hands-on curriculum, you will engage in clinical fieldwork each semester and gain practical, hands-on experience under the guidance of faculty, supervisors and mentors. You will have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty, attend professional conferences and contribute to academic publications, and you will graduate prepared to apply for certification from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and for licensure in New York State.

Like travelers in foreign lands, students of history come face to face with the diversity of the human condition. They undergo the unsettling - but salutary - experience of nonrecognition, and so arrive at an understanding that peoples in the past were other, that “then” was different from “now,” “there” different from “here.”

Enriched by that understanding, they are able to view their own time and place in a new light, as the outcome of local and contingent circumstances rather than as the inevitable product of human nature.

No other discipline in the humanities and the social sciences covers so wide a range of topics as history. Instead of studying just one or another segment of human activity - e.g. politics, economics, literature, art, philosophy, etc. - history integrates all of them. Located at the intersection of multiple disciplines, it is of crucial importance to all students of the humanities and the social sciences.

Students who study in the Yeshiva College English Department gain direct, intimate access to other cultures and time periods, through encounters with works from classical Greece, medieval Europe, and Victorian Britain to U.S. and world literature of the present. At the same time, students develop both analytically and creatively as writers and thinkers, learning to express themselves with clarity and power. In engaging us with a range of forms — poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, film, as well as the genres of the Internet age — English courses enlarge our vision of the complexity and richness of human achievements and how we might contribute to them ourselves.
