More than 7% of total burden of disease in Australia is due to poor diet*. Study Deakin's Bachelor of Nutrition Science and help tackle the challenges facing our society including disease prevention, lifespan nutrition, obesity, the spread of misinformation, and the social and physiological effects of food on our wellbeing. Modelled on commercial laboratories, our food preparation, food analysis and two sensory laboratories give students hands-on real-world laboratory experience preparing you for the workplace.

Gain at least 75 hours of workplace training through industry placement. These experiences ensure you have the practical skills to improve health through food and nutrition – skills that are increasingly in demand as society grapples with nutrition-related diseases and their impact on wellbeing. This course provides a pathway to the Master of Dietetics, which allocates 60% of places to Deakin graduates.

Psychology
This sequence develops students’ understanding of a range of topics in psychology, which is the science concerned with unravelling questions about human behaviour and mental processes.

This sequence prepares students for work in complementary professional fields upon graduation. Careers immediately available to health sciences graduates within the pathway to allied professions, can be divided broadly into the following categories (please refer to the Psychology Careers website for details):

Middle East Studies

Deakin offers the only major in Middle East studies in Australia, so we’re best placed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the events and issues shaping the region. You'll gain in-depth knowledge by exploring topics that include media representation, human rights and humanitarian intervention. You'll also have hands-on experience through innovative assessment practices including one of the world's largest political role-play simulations.

Deakin’s Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Cyber Security is the only degree of its kind in Australia. Today cyber security is a significant challenge for individuals and businesses alike. This course will equip you with an understanding of the major drivers of criminal behaviour, along with the industry-relevant skills to tackle what is quickly becoming a critical threat to society. You will gain expertise in securing data and data communications, as well as investigating and providing solutions to cyber crime.

The Master of Dietetics prepares you to solve widespread health issues through science-based, diet-related treatments. Deakin’s Master of Dietetics explores the important relationship between diet and disease. Accredited by Dietitians Australia (DA) (formerly the Dietitians Association of Australia) and shaped by decades of industry input, this course trains you to prescribe science-based treatments for a wide range of health issues, from obesity and diabetes, to allergies and malnutrition. Project management

Project management is a growing, dynamic profession that involves planning, coordinating, costing and evaluating projects of all sizes, as well as managing the people and risks involved. In a globalised economy project management is central to develop and deliver new products, services and infrastructure as well as implement new techniques and processes to facilitate change. Project management studies at Deakin are based on key project management methodologies to provide a holistic viewpoint with the aim to deliver generic project management skills that can be applied across most sectors and industries.

The commercialisation of rapidly evolving technologies has opened the door to a new kind of expert with specialist knowledge in both science and law. Study Deakin's Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws to graduate with an increasingly sought-after skill set to succeed in either field, or where science and law intersect.

This double degree gives you the freedom to learn more about what interests you. Get a taste for different disciplines within science before choosing to focus on an area you’re passionate about. Religious Studies
Understanding religion has seldom been as important as it is today. There is increasing dialogue among the greater religions of the world, but there is also increasing misunderstandings of religious traditions. Religious ideas are regularly debated in the media and featured in popular culture and religious beliefs play a significant role in conflict, peace building, and international development. With countries and communities becoming more diverse and complex, the need for cross-cultural religious literacy and inter-disciplinary expertise in religion is becoming more urgent.

The Religious Studies Major is a multi-disciplinary major that looks at religion and religions from diverse viewpoints and methodologies. The major includes units from the disciplines of anthropology, philosophy, sociology, literary and cultural studies and others. It also offers the possibility of focusing on particular religious traditions.
