Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Speech Language & Hearing Sciences: Learn about basic science and communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, child language development and selected disorders of human communication. Concentrate in Hearing Sciences and learn about sound, hearing, and hearing disorders, and prepare for admission to graduate audiology programs. Concentrate in Speech-Language Sciences and learn about speech, language, and speech and language disorders, and prepare for admission to speech-language pathology graduate programs.

This exciting mathematics program is flexible, innovative and provides opportunities for students to work with leading researchers to gain academic and employment experience.

Choose from a broad range of courses or concentrations in pure mathematics (development of mathematical ideas and concepts for their own sake), applied mathematics (mathematics for applications in science, engineering, economics or business), statistics (experimental design, sampling methods and data analysis techniques), MICA (mathematics coupled with modern computer software applications) or mathematics education.

For exceptional students, there is also an Accelerated Mathematics Studies stream where you can complete a four-year honours degree in any concentration in as little as three years.

The Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists — scientists who study the Earth and other planets in order to better understand their origin and history.

We know the Earth’s history reasonably well, and that knowledge has helped us to discover natural resources, such as oil and gas, economic minerals and metals, and to understand phenomena, such as global climate change and volcano and earthquake hazards. The geological knowledge derived from the Earth also helps us to better understand other solar system bodies. Two of our professors are planetary geologists, including Dr. Mariek Schmidt who is a member of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Project that operates the rover Curiosity as it explores Gale Crater.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for initial registration as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

Study the “science of choice” — learning how limited resources can best be used to meet the needs of individuals and society. You’ll look at how individual consumers choose to spend their time and money, and how producers predict and respond to consumer needs.

You’ll gain an understanding of the economy as a whole, from the banking system, unemployment, government debt and taxation, to international trade and exchange rates, and natural resource use and conservation.

State-of-the-art equipment and internationally recognized faculty and research projects make our department a dynamic and exciting place.

Studies concentrate on various aspects of solid-state and materials research, from superconductors to soft-condensed matter systems. Our undergraduate students are involved in research — some have even published papers before graduation.

Are you interested in studying how people communicate, ways that social structures affect communication, or how new technologies are changing human communications?

The Media and Communication Studies program focuses on the impact of media and communication in the creation of meaning, identity and social change. The program emphasizes the study of media content, audiences and institutions in their political, economic and social contexts in Canada and elsewhere.

The program is offered as a combined major and focuses on the period from Late Antiquity to the 17th century while emphasizing on the interrelations amongst music, architecture, art, history, literature and thought

The courses offered in the program range from the Renaissance Italy to the end of the Roman world, from Iceland to Byzantium and from analysis of Chaucer, Dante and Shakespeare to the reading of Latin literature, from music to the architecture and art of the particular period. The students can enroll in the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities under the Faculty of Humanities and then may choose their major after exploring the various courses in the first year.

The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies offers a combined major program leading to a BA (Honors or Pass) and Minor for students in other disciplines and develops their skills in analysis, argument, critical inquiry and expression.

The Certificate in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre would be of particular interest to social workers, drama therapists, psycho-therapists, prison counsellors, people who train volunteers, personnel managers, union organizers and market consultants who wish to add to existing qualifications or to acquire courses which might later be applied to a degree. Studies include the development of skills, such as assessing and evaluating what is perceived, generating ideas, making connections, predicting outcomes, empathizing, abstracting the core from the periphery, questioning, accommodating and compromising and self-presentation. 

You’ll be on the forefront of research in this exciting and knowledge-based industry. You’ll take courses in biological sciences, chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, exploring the use of living organisms to produce goods and services for practical and industrial purposes.

Career opportunities in biotechnology are expanding rapidly due to a dramatic increase in global market demands for biotechnology products.

As a modern biotechnologist, you’ll study areas such as recombinant DNA technology, genetic and protein engineering, cell fusion, and gene cloning and expression.

Co-op Education
The path to a successful career starts in one of Canada’s most diverse co-op programs. Co-op at Brock gives you the opportunity to apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world situations. Our students test their skills daily, gaining experience and an edge in a global economy.

This program is for those who have already completed a university degree. The program is four semesters, taken over two academic years, allowing students time to learn, reflect and grow as beginning teachers.
Completion of the program leads to a BEd degree and an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Registration. Programs are at campuses in both St. Catharines and Hamilton.
Teacher Education programs at Brock embrace the integration of theory and practice.
Students are placed in partner schools very early in their program. They move through a planned course of study, including in excess of 80 days in Ontario classrooms. With a focus on pedagogy reflective of 21st century learners, Brock teacher candidates have opportunities to personalize their learning through optional professional development courses, and may qualify for an alternative placement experience in their final year.
Instruction in professional practice takes place under the supervision of practicum advisers, practicum instructors and associate teachers, working with teacher candidates
in schools throughout the Niagara and the greater Hamilton regions and beyond.

Primary/Junior program: Certifies to teach Kindergarten through Grade 6.
Junior/Intermediate program: Certifies to teach Grades 4 through 10, emphasizing elementary school.
Intermediate/Senior program: Certifies to teach Grades 7 through 12, emphasizing secondary school.
