Our BA in General Humanities is designed to allow you to pursue a more flexible selection of courses, with broad exposure to courses from across all of our Faculties.

At the same time, the degree provides the opportunity to focus on a particular area of study, with the majority of courses taken in disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities. You also have the option of including up to two minors in this degree.

In the Department of Visual Arts (VISA), education takes place within well-equipped studios and teaching spaces, as well as in our vibrant local arts community.

We provide education in two distinct but interconnected streams: Studio Art (STDA) and the History of Art and Visual Culture (HAVC). Studio students take courses
in all fine art media, such as painting, photography, drawing, digital media, performance art, and non-traditional methods of expression. HAVC courses explore history as it is connected to the present, with a focus on themes such as the body in art and visual culture or the role of censorship from the ancient world to the present day. Courses are innovative, interdisciplinary and in keeping with the currencies of contemporary thought.

Our professors are exhibiting artists and published scholars who have mastered a wide array of media and topics, and are fluent in emerging discourses. Add to that a vibrant roster of internationally exhibiting artists who come through Rodman Hall Art Centre, the University’s art gallery, and you have a well-rounded, exciting education in Visual Art. Want to show your work, curate a show, or participate in a festival? How about giving a lecture on your research, or travelling to see art in Italy or Greece? All is possible within a degree program in the Department of Visual Arts.

History is at the heart of every educated citizen. To understand the present and prepare for the future, one must learn about the past.

At Brock, History is much more than memorizing facts and dates — it involves exploring changes and continuities in bygone societies, cultures and peoples.

The study of History entails following your interests and curiosities, evaluating and interpreting evidence, as well as formulating logical arguments based on that evidence.

Co-op Education
The path to a successful career starts in one of Canada’s most diverse co-op programs. Co-op at Brock gives you the opportunity to apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world situations. Our students test their skills daily, gaining experience and an edge in a global economy.

The History Co-op program gives students the opportunity to gain job experience in a diverse range of professional fields at the same time that they are working on a well-rounded education. The History Co-op program combines academic and work terms over a four year period. Students spend two years in an academic setting prior to taking the first work placement.

You’ll work with the very best faculty, artists and theatre professionals from Niagara, the GTA and beyond.

As part of the core, you will take courses that integrate theory and practice (praxis). These involve a mix of lectures and studio work that explore ways in which creativity and analysis are linked culturally and historically.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

• Drama in Education and Applied Theatre explores theatre’s impact outside the traditional theatre space, including the ways drama and theatre activities enhance the learning process.
• Performance involves a core series of courses to actualize your potential as a stage actor.
• Production and Design prepares you for production work, crewing, design and other elements of technical theatre stagecraft.

State-of-the-art equipment and internationally recognized faculty and research projects make our department a dynamic and exciting place.

Studies concentrate on various aspects of solid-state and materials research, from superconductors to soft-condensed matter systems. Our undergraduate students are involved in research — some have even published papers before graduation.

Co-op Education

The CCES certificate prepares students for the rigours of post-secondary studies in the broad field of Education and related disciplines.

CCES provides a background in educational theory, Canadian educational context, and Canadian culture. Crucial skills required to be successful in Canadian post-secondary programs such as research skills, critical thinking skills, academic communication skills and problem-solving skills, are provided through an educational studies context. Opportunities for international students to improve their English language proficiency, increase their familiarity with Canadian cultural practices, and engage in Canadian communities are integrated into the program. Assistance with applying to advanced post-secondary programs is provided. The international student will be well-prepared to apply to, and succeed in, an academic program at a Canadian postsecondary institution.

Brock University offers the first Bachelor of Public Health degree in Canada and equips the students with the skills and knowledge required to manage the upcoming issues in Public health, learn about the social, environmental and biological determinants of health issues and explore disease prevention and health promotion strategies.

The students study chronic and emerging health issues, and diseases in the developing and developed countries and the program focuses on the health and wellness of the individual, the community and the population as a whole with emphasis on health policy, health administration, health promotion and health programming and evaluation.

The program offers multiple opportunities to the students for internships with community partners, international study placements, self-directed study, research experiences and internships where they can apply their skills to developing public health programs and policies, conducting health research and planning, implementing, and managing disease prevention and health promotion programs.

Brock is the only university in Canada granting a specialized Bachelor of Sport Management (BSM) degree. Our program has an outstanding reputation within the sport industry for the quality of our students and graduates.

We offer a cutting-edge program where you’ll thrive through academic challenges and experiential learning opportunities. Our focus is on the application of theory, principles and practices of business to the sport industry. Field placements and internships in your third and fourth years offer significant career-building experiences.

We maintain active connections with our Sport Management alumni, providing our classes with guest lecturers and key networking, internship and employment opportunities.

At graduation, you’ll be prepared to be hired directly into the sport industry or to pursue postgraduate studies in the Arts, Business or Law. The range of opportunity extends throughout the private, public and not-for-profit sectors of all sports. Our graduates are employed around the world within the broad business of sport.

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour, and the program at Brock offers a diverse approach to this exciting field of study.

We offer courses that cover a variety of topics in Psychology, including: Social Processes (e.g., Development of Deception, Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination, Human Sexuality), Brain and Cognition (e.g., Cognitive Neuroscience, Human Neuropsychology, Neuropsychopharmacology), and Applied Psychology (e.g., Counselling and Psychotherapy, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology).

Our Department has an expertise in examining psychological processes and behaviour across the lifespan, from infancy to old age. Studying Psychology is applicable to a wide variety of career paths such as those in research and industry, counselling and clinical psychology, business, government, and education.

Through lectures, seminars, labs, and one-on-one mentoring, students gain expertise in human behaviour and job-related skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, problem solving, project management, research design, and data management and analysis. Our department also requires that students complete specific courses that will help with career preparation (e.g., skill development and identification, exploring career opportunities, job searches and interviewing skills, statistics and data management), as well as a wealth of opportunities to learn outside of the classroom.

Co-op is available with any of our 4-year degree options, where students will complete 3 separate work terms over the 4 years. Students can also gain applied experiences by participating in the Psych Society, working as a teaching assistant or becoming a research assistant in one of our internationally renowned laboratories. These experiences will enrich your studies and help you to launch your career.

We’ll provide you with a comprehensive education encompassing sensory science, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, plant physiology and cell biology.

Your education will be enhanced by an opportunity to apply what you learn in the lecture hall with hands-on winemaking labs and viticulture field-work.
