The world of information technology is always evolving. What is now commonplace was once a breakthrough. As a student in one of the Bachelor of Information Technology programs, you will acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to address the IT issues of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) offers four distinct programs: Information Resource Management (IRM), Interactive Multimedia and Design (IMD), Network Technology (NET) and Optical Systems and Sensors (OSS). These programs are offered jointly by Carleton’s School of Information Technology and Algonquin College’s schools of Health and Community Studies (for IRM), Media and Design (for IMD), and Advanced Technology (for NET and OSS). You will graduate with a Bachelor of Information Technology degree from Carleton University and one of: a Library and Information Technician diploma (for IRM students), an Advanced Diploma of Applied Arts (for IMD students), an Advanced Diploma in Technology (for NET students) or an Advanced Diploma in Photonics and Laser Technology (for OSS students) from Algonquin College.

Information Resource Management
The four-year IRM program enables students to graduate with both a Bachelor of Information Technology degree from Carleton University and a Library and Information Technician diploma from Algonquin College. In four years, graduates obtain what would otherwise take 6 years to complete. The program provides students with a broad understanding of information management, as well as specific capabilities in managing digital resources as these affect research data, websites and social media. Such skills are especially important now that the library and information technology field has moved beyond the traditional library setting to encompass a wide range of occupations in both the private- and public-sectors.

Carleton’s innovative philosophy programs offer courses ranging over the history of philosophy, ethics and social/political philosophy, philosophy of mind and language, metaphysics and epistemology. Starting in first year, you will have the opportunity to take a seminar class (of 30 students) that challenges you to develop your skills in reading philosophical texts and making philosophical arguments. In second year, you will take two courses that are offered just for philosophy majors, ensuring that you have the skills you need to do your best. In fourth year, you will study in seminar classes where the professors share with you, at your level, the new knowledge that they are helping to create.

Study the place of the English language in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, and the benefits and challenges it brings. Learn how to teach English as an international language using current methods and obtain valuable accreditation as an English teacher.

Biology
Biology in the 21st century is among the most diverse and exciting of the sciences. Many of the challenges we face as a society, from climate change to the development of novel health therapies, involve biological solutions. As a Carleton Biology student, you will gain broad experience through core science courses and options that suit your individual interests and needs.

Physics
Physics is the study of the most basic natural phenomena—from the smallest particles to the largest structures of the universe, from the beginning to the end. Physics is also the scaffolding behind the technology found in numerous current advances such as in smart phones, self-driving cars and radiation treatment of cancer. Physicists are keen to understand the nature of the world around them, as well as to control it for the betterment of humanity. They use their creativity to solve challenging problems, whether they are creating very powerful lasers for eye surgery, colliding particles at very-high energy, or descending deep down into underground mines to investigate the most basic building blocks of matter. Physicists look for and examine patterns in nature in order to formulate natural laws. They push scientific boundaries by exploring unknown territory through theory and experimentation, often thinking about and describing our physical world in ways that we cannot yet observe in nature.

Economics may be a specialized area of knowledge, but it is relevant to almost every aspect of our lives. At its core, it is the study of reasoned choice in the context of scarce resources and competing interests. The need to make such choices pervades the day-to-day lives of all of us—as individuals and in society as a whole.

In Carleton’s Bachelor of Economics (BEcon), you will study the operation of market-based economies, examining the causes of economic growth, inflation, unemployment and international trade.

Study global inequalities and social change, combining theoretical and applied approaches. Gain an understanding of multiple dimensions of inequality through topics such as poverty, racism, colonialism and gender. Acquire knowledge of various forms of resistance to oppression, including social movements and transnational solidarity.

The study of history allows us to recognize and understand the complex issues that shaped the contemporary world. The History Department offers courses in African, American, Asian, Canadian, Caribbean, European, Latin American and South Asian history. Some courses trace the history of social, political and cultural change of a region or period. Others are thematic and may examine women’s history, the histories of science, sexuality, food and drink, or slavery. In the Public History concentration, Honours students explore how history appears in our everyday lives, not just in museums and monuments, but also in movies, reality television, video games, music and the stories families and communities pass from one generation to the next.

In first year, history students may choose a small seminar class or a larger lecture course with a tutorial group. Both formats foster debate and discussion. All history courses encourage student research which may draw on the rich array of libraries and archives in the national capital, including Carleton’s own valuable collections and resources.

Greek and Roman Studies (Classics) give a brilliant chance to find out about the antiquated foundations of human advancement and to watch the effect that the old world had on later periods. The program inspects the writing, language, history, theory, folklore, religion, social and financial life, innovation, craftsmanship, engineering and archaeology of the old world, encircled by the effect on the Mediterranean bowl of the city-conditions of Greece and the Roman Republic and Empire.

Entrepreneurship - Concentration
Learn about the entrepreneurial process and experience the steps in starting a business—from idea inception to implementation in the marketplace. BCom students take courses with non-business students in the Minor in Entrepreneurship, creating a collaborative and interdisciplinary classroom environment. Carleton offers support and funding opportunities for student entrepreneurs.
