Psychologists study the mechanisms that underlie our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. They examine a diverse range of topics, such as how we think and learn, how we interact with others and how we can promote healthy development and wellness. This is accomplished by conducting research so that the knowledge gained can help us to better understand the human mind, enhance well-being and performance, and generate additional research questions.

All of our programs provide opportunities to explore psychology’s major areas within the context of an active and diverse research environment. Our honours programs offer six concentrations for students wishing to focus on one of these major areas.

Europe and Russia have played and continue to play an important role in shaping the world. Taught by top experts in their fields, students in this interdisciplinary specialization will study the region’s history, society, politics, economics, language, and culture, placing them in a broader global context. The program’s geographic scope is unique in treating Europe, Russia, and Eurasia together, highlighting the considerable social, cultural, economic, and political ties that span the region. You may focus your studies on particular countries, a set of countries, or regional institutions such as the European Union. You may also study thematic issues that affect the region such as migration, transnational civil society, trade, EU enlargement, foreign policy, and the impact of globalization on identity politics. The specialization is championed by the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, one of Canada’s oldest area studies programs that works closely with Carleton’s Centre for European Studies, a European Union Centre of Excellence.

Computer and Internet security has become a critical issue in society because of the vulnerability of our computing and communication networks to hackers and malicious software such as viruses and worms. You will acquire a solid background in computer science and software engineering, as well as depth in both the foundations and the practice of information systems security, including computer and network security, cryptography and software security.

Are you interested in global environmental issues like climate change? This specialization looks at global processes and their impact on the environment, focusing attention on the emergence of the environment as a key theme of globalization. You will have the opportunity to develop an integrated understanding of global environmental issues, processes, patterns and solutions, as well as a skill set for conducting a critical analysis of current approaches to these issues and methods to implement and effect change. You will examine global biophysical systems and human-environment interactions, and you can also choose areas of interest within the specialization (such as human geography, urban networks, global environmental politics, sustainability or environmental change).

Carleton’s Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies offers a program that engages students in critically understanding the key issues of feminist scholarship and their relationship to our lived experience. Students have the opportunity to engage in activist activities, study gender in courses across disciplines, and do a practicum placement with feminist groups from inside and outside the Carleton community. Central to our program is the consideration of how gender intersects with race, class, ethnicity, age, ability and sexuality. Students explore the practices and processes that impact on women’s and men’s lives in historical, socio-economic, cultural and political contexts.

Carleton’s innovative philosophy programs offer courses ranging over the history of philosophy, ethics and social/political philosophy, philosophy of mind and language, metaphysics and epistemology. Starting in first year, you will have the opportunity to take a seminar class (of 30 students) that challenges you to develop your skills in reading philosophical texts and making philosophical arguments. In second year, you will take two courses that are offered just for philosophy majors, ensuring that you have the skills you need to do your best. In fourth year, you will study in seminar classes where the professors share with you, at your level, the new knowledge that they are helping to create.

We live in a world on the move. Not only are there more than 200 million people now living outside their country of their birth, but new technologies have allowed for the movement of ideas around the world and connections between communities like never before. Behind the statistics are the lived experiences of migrants themselves, the contributions they make to their new societies and the links that they sustain with their countries and communities of origin. This multidisciplinary specialization is the first undergraduate program in Canada to address the intertwined phenomena of refugees, migration, mobility and diasporas that shape the modern world. It brings together a broad spectrum of practitioners and academics from the humanities and the social sciences to examine the cultural, social, economic and political implications of the movement and transnational settlement of people. It supports historically informed and forward looking accounts of cultural and social identities, diversity and integration, exile and memory, forced migration and refugee communities. It prepares globally conscious students for journeys of intellectual discovery and rewarding careers in public service, creative industries, cultural institutions such as museums, migration and humanitarian INGOs, and migration and settlement-related agencies, as well as for Law School and graduate programs in a variety of disciplines. 

Carleton is home to the oldest and largest BA program in law in Canada. In the program, you will acquire a strong understanding of the dynamics of law, including its rules, agents, institutions and power structures. You will study legal theory and its application in everyday life and you will be taught by award-winning researchers and extensively published professors. Carleton’s proximity to Canada’s important public institutions, such as the Supreme Court of Canada, Parliament and the Department of Justice can lead to unique work and volunteer opportunities for our students. As an Honours student, you will have the choice of a concentration in Law, Policy and Government; Business Law; or Transnational Law and Human Rights.

Acquire the knowledge necessary for an engagement with the critical dimensions of global politics. This specialization takes a problem-focused and applied approach to the study of global political issues such as economic relations and the gap between rich and poor, democracy and its economic and political benefits, human rights and the different emphasis placed upon rights by different societies, war and peace, ethnic conflicts around the world, and the politics of the environment. You will gain the skills and experience necessary to better understand and engage in the myriad of arenas in which global politics takes place, including the United Nations, development banks, civil society organizations, refugee organizations, international NGOs and others.

The Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to the study of Europe, Russia and Eurasia. You will be able to build a program according to your specific interests, combining subjects such as history, politics, economics, language and culture. You will examine issues such as international security, nationalism and ethnic conflict, crime and corruption, the effects of globalization, migration and multiculturalism, environmental and social policy, democratization and civil society, collective memory and national identity, market reform and European integration. In your third or fourth year, you may choose to take part in an academic exchange in a European country or in Russia and/or co-op employment. In addition to the core academic program, the Institute hosts a number of special lectures by high-profile experts, foreign visitors and embassy personnel throughout the year. An internship program is available to qualified fourth-year students.
