Gain an understanding of the multiple varieties of spoken French and the diversity of French literatures across continents. Study how both are patterned globally through issues and contexts ranging from colonial and postcolonial histories, transnational contacts, cultural transfers and experiences of migration.

Our students acquire a comprehensive, multidisciplinary understanding of the causes and definitions of crime and criminal behaviour, criminal law and its administration, and social and institutional responses to crime. You will personalize your program by choosing one of three concentrations: Law, Psychology or Sociology. In addition, possible field placements in organizations such as the Crown Attorney’s Office, criminal law offices or the Royal Ottawa Hospital (Forensic Program) give you hands-on experience in real-life situations, including front-line work with offenders, police, victims, and lawyers, to name a few. Other placements can match you with researchers and policy analysts involved in criminal justice and crime prevention. Study global inequalities and social change, combining theoretical and applied approaches. Gain an understanding of multiple dimensions of inequality through topics such as poverty, racism, colonialism and gender. Acquire knowledge of various forms of resistance to oppression, including social movements and transnational solidarity.

Carleton’s Honor Program in Human Rights and Social Justice requires total of 20.0 credits of which 9.0 credits need to be in Human Rights and Social Justice.  With the help of Human Rights and Social Justice Program students will be able to contribute through theory and practical to people’s struggle to overcome the everyday issues. They give legitimate, social and political apparatuses and procedures for testing types of separation, enslavement and abuse, for example, those dependent on race, religion, sex, sexual direction, national or ethnic source, or political assessment, just as authentic practices of expansionism and misuse. 

Drawing from a wide scope of interdisciplinary themes and comes nearer from the humanities and sociologies, the Human Rights and Social Justice Program gives an outline of recorded and contemporary human rights issues and their effect on human lives in various social settings. Bachelor’s in Human Rights and Social Justice allows students to combine their knowledge and skills and also they are prepared to work in public interest sector, unions, women groups, community groups, governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Chemistry
As a student interested in chemistry, you can enrol in programs and courses in all the main areas of chemistry, including analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, theoretical and environmental chemistry. Concentrations in Nanotechnology and Chemical Toxicology are available. Extensive lab experience is offered, helping you to round out your studies with practical experience.

Physics
Physics is the study of the most basic natural phenomena—from the smallest particles to the largest structures of the universe, from the beginning to the end. Physics is also the scaffolding behind the technology found in numerous current advances such as in smart phones, self-driving cars and radiation treatment of cancer. Physicists are keen to understand the nature of the world around them, as well as to control it for the betterment of humanity. They use their creativity to solve challenging problems, whether they are creating very powerful lasers for eye surgery, colliding particles at very-high energy, or descending deep down into underground mines to investigate the most basic building blocks of matter. Physicists look for and examine patterns in nature in order to formulate natural laws. They push scientific boundaries by exploring unknown territory through theory and experimentation, often thinking about and describing our physical world in ways that we cannot yet observe in nature.

Psychologists study the mechanisms that underlie our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. They examine a diverse range of topics, such as how we think and learn, how we interact with others and how we can promote healthy development and wellness. This is accomplished by conducting research so that the knowledge gained can help us to better understand the human mind, enhance well-being and performance, and generate additional research questions.

This stream includes courses on artificial intelligence, machine learning and neural networks. Carleton is home to the oldest and largest BA program in law in Canada.
