The Mechanical Technician – Elevating Devices diploma program covers all three levels of in-class apprenticeship curriculum for students who may be looking to complete their apprenticeship. The diploma program focuses primarily on:

• Installation, maintenance and servicing elevating devices
• Regulatory and industry best practices
• Build an understanding of elevating device electrical, mechanical and hydraulics systems
• Graduates of this integrated technician-apprenticeship program are exempt with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, from all three levels of the in-school training portion of the Elevating Devices Mechanic apprenticeship program (636E).  
• Blended theory classes that are face-to-face and on-line.

What you will learn

• History of elevating devices
• Mechanical and electrical systems
• Operation, installation, maintenance and procedures for traction elevators, elevators and moving walkways
• Hydraulic systems
• Reading and interpreting engineering drawings. e.g. AutoCAD
• Machines and circuits including single phase circuits, transformers, 3-phase electrical systems, elementary control systems and electric machines
• Elevator hydraulic systems and installation
• Motors, generators, controls and AC drives
• Lifting devices for individuals with physical disabilities
• Circuit tracing
• Modernization and alterations for elevating devices

We will cover a lot of ground over two semesters, beyond just PR strategies and tactics. You will learn best practice in:

• Public relations event planning and execution, to name a few

Public relations students begin receiving hands-on experience as early as week two, ensuring a well-rounded learning opportunity through:

• Community-based client work based out of our in-house full-service communications agency – The Agency
• An unpaid 140 hours field placement in an industry setting, taken anytime through the two-semester program
• Networking and learning from industry leaders through our guest speaking series, informational interviews, mock job interviews, and strong relationships with partners from the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)

You will graduate with a portfolio of materials and projects that demonstrate your ability to function at a professional level. Some students even find their first job in the field from connections made through our vast industry connections.

Hydro utilities are in need of skilled technologists that have a strong foundation of modern electrical energy and who can help the industry move forward into the smart energy efficient digital age.

• Experience a unique program introducing a multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on the generation, capture, storage, and distribution of energy and their integration

Support clients with dual diagnoses across the lifespan through the use of intervention strategies, research or policy development.

What you’ll learn

• Learn about mental health and disability separately in Semester 1 and how clients present with complex conditions as part of dual diagnoses in Semester 2.
• Practice intervention strategies appropriate for clients and families.
• Engage in simulation exercises that build awareness and empathy.
• Develop knowledge translation skills to successfully work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Work directly with clients or behind the scenes through research or policy development.

Program Highlights

• Learn the foundational skills for software application development. This hands-on program covers key topics including a variety of programming languages, web application development, mobile application development, systems analysis, database design, quality assurance testing, technical writing, and communication skills.

The Human Services Foundation program lets students gain exposure to various study options within the Human Services field including working with children, youth, families and persons with special needs.

Students in Human Services Foundation will also learn about community issues such as poverty, homelessness and mental illness through unique and flexible learning opportunities including on-line learning, community based visits, labs and role-playing.

Experience the rewarding challenges of operating and maintaining of facility equipment related to steam and power generation.

This program is accredited Power (Operating) Engineer by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), providing an opportunity for reduced operator time towards certification.

Gain the academic and practical experiences necessary to succeed as a Power Engineer, from real-life experiences taught by certified Operating Engineers.

There is a high demand for operating engineers at all levels and 4th Class Power Engineers may decide to pursue higher certification, up to and including, 1st Class.
