The Psychology Department offers a full slate of courses that cover all major areas of the discipline.

Students can choose between the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs when they study Psychology at Nipissing University. The main difference between the two degree options is in the electives you choose. BA students will take humanities and social science elective courses (e.g., English, Philosophy, Criminal Justice, Sociology, and History), while BSc students will take electives from the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics). The BSc program offers the possibility of adding a Certificate in Neuroscience when certain courses are combined with an Honours thesis in a Neuroscience area. The BA program offers a Certificate in Early Intensive Behaviour Intervention – Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Data Science program leads to an undergraduate degree which provides graduates with the necessary mathematical and computational
background to be a data scientist. It will introduce you to the applications of data science in your area of interest. Obtaining the degree will involve a combination of courses
and experiential learning components in the form of a research paper, practicums and internships. Whether you are interested in precision medicine,dealing with data sets on environment or business analytics, or understanding complex systems, you will learn how to use the tools and problemsolving skills of computer science and mathematics to work with data.

Welcome to the Child and Family Studies (CHFS) program within the School of Human and Social Development at Nipissing University. The Child and Family Studies Program is unique with a particular focus on two thematic areas of study:

• Human Development and Learning; and
• Child and Family Well-Being: Issues, Services, and Social Justice. Students can pursue a Major, Specialization or Honours Specialization

Further, you want a career within child and adult developmental and/or behaviour services, health/mental health services, child welfare, education, justice, government, or even the private sector, and have a real appetite for social justice and making a significant difference. You may choose to complete one of our 2 Applied Certificates in Applied Behaviour Analysis or our Program Evaluation and Applied Research Certificate (PEAR) as you learn to improve systems and services for children, youth, or adults, across the social and human services sector.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Human Resource Management is a one year program designed for adult learners who have completed a bachelor-level degree, and who are looking for a pathway to professional employment in the human resources management profession.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resource Management, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 30 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

The Master of Arts in History program consists of course work, a Major Research Paper, and a presentation of research at the annual Graduate Student Conference. It is offered as both a one-year full-time program and on a flex-time basis. Our program centres on the following fields: International, Gender, Canadian, European, and Environmental history. Our dynamic and award-winning faculty has expertise in areas that include environmental history, the history of genocide, indigenous studies and community history, foreign relations and politics, and military history and the history of espionage.​

Students in the Master of Arts in History program take compulsory seminars in four of the five following areas each year. These are also areas in which the expertise of our Faculty allows us to supervise Major Research Papers.

International History
Our international history concentration offers three major areas of focus. The first analyzes the history of the Cold War, the second the study of international law and war crimes tribunals. The third focuses on foreign policy and international relations, specifically in Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, Germany, France, and Canada.

Gender History
Our gender history concentration investigates gender in a range of contexts across historical periods and geographic boundaries. Scholars examine the impact of constructions of gender on work, family relations, religion, the military, and sexuality.

Canadian History
For any given period from colonial times to the present, the Canadian course will focus on a theme relevant to today’s world such as the state and resource development, the environment and food, the family, oral history, colonization, and decolonization.

European History
Our European history concentration examines Europe from the medieval to the modern era. Our faculty have expertise in the national histories of Britain, Germany, and Russia, as well as topics such as war and society, the Holocaust and comparative genocide studies, military history, and the history of medieval Europe.

Environmental History
Explore environmental history as a sub-field of history, focusing on the challenge it poses to other, human-centered subfields of history, as well as its links to historical geography and the environmental sciences.

The Liberal Arts program provides maximum flexibility to study a range of disciplines. It emphasizes breadth rather than specialization so you can develop a program that is based on your specific interests and goals. The majority of courses taken in this degree will be in the Humanities and Social Sciences, although you can take courses in Business and Science as well.

Students in Nipissing’s Liberal Arts program enjoy the flexibility of being able to design their own degree. Liberal Arts emphasizes breadth rather than specialization and allows individuals to develop a program that is suited to their personal interests and goals.

Accounting is about more than financial controls and reporting — it’s also about fiscal and social responsibility. Accounting professionals need to show due diligence, and to think and act ethically when they evaluate options. You will be challenged to think not only about the shareholders, but all stakeholders when making decisions. You will learn the uses and limitations of accounting information through case studies, simulation, and hands-on learning experiences. You will gain an understanding of many topics, including auditing, information systems auditing, taxation, consolidation, not-for-profit accounting, hedges, and foreign exchange within your advanced accounting courses. You will participate in tax clinics, where accounting students prepare tax returns for low-income households and perform “mock audits” on local not-for-profit organizations. You will have help preparing for the CPA professional examinations. This combination of social awareness, academic vigor, practical experience, and support is what helps our graduates succeed in today’s marketplace.

Native Studies offers you an opportunity to learn about Native cultures, philosophies, literature, histories, and contemporary issues that are central to this land that we live in. Its multidisciplinary approach reflects the different directions of the Medicine Wheel, so your studies will include the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects that are needed for true learning according to indigenous thought.

Built upon traditional First Nations land and with a number of First Nations communities in the area, North Bay and Nipissing University are significant centres of aboriginal nfluence and activity. It would be challenging to find a more appropriate or ideal place than Nipissing to study and engage with a diversity of native cultures, communities, and organizations.

Our program welcomes both Native and non-Native students in an inclusive, side-by-side learning environment. By studying at Nipissing, you will get a first-rate academic experience, and you will also be immersed in local Native communities (both urban and rural). You will have access to and learn from many aboriginal organizations and services in the North Bay area including the North Bay Métis Council and the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre. You will also meet elders, access a wide range of resources, and participate in or learn from many community activities and events

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.

Build on your current career or education or go in a whole new direction with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Marketing. This program will give you business and marketing skills that apply to a variety of industries. The program is great for people who already work in marketing, as well as those who wish to broaden their skill base, transition into management, or market their own business. Courses emphasize practical skills and use a blend of lectures, case studies and group work on real projects in the business community.

Marketing influences many of our decisions, from small day-to-day decisions like what to eat for lunch, to large important decisions like what kind of car to buy or choosing a university. Marketing is about more than advertising and promotion—it’s also about making strategic decisions about products/ services, pricing, and distribution. In the marketing stream, you will develop the critical thinking skills you need to make good managerial decisions in a competitive marketplace. You will learn fundamental marketing concepts, research methods, market analysis, and strategies related to consumer behaviour, brand management, and business-to-business marketing. You will also learn about marketing communication, promotions, merchandising, public relations, packaging, as well as, direct and digital marketing. True to our more-than-a-degree promise, you will have plenty of opportunities to apply communication and interaction skills and to develop leadership, negotiation, and team management skills. The Marketing Stream offers a variety of elective courses in specialized areas such as sport, social marketing, international marketing, sales management, and innovative marketing. The marketing specialization is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Marketing.
