What does a vet assistant do?

Veterinary Assistants often manage the day-to-day operations of a veterinary clinic, providing both customer assistance and patient care as part of their everyday duties.

Will I get to practice with hands-on training?

As with all courses at Oulton College, we make sure you have lots of time to practice the skills taught in the classroom. You’ll have a chance to put your knowledge to the test on sit at our Veterinary Clinic, learn to be comfortable working in a laboratory, and also take part in a four week practicum placement in a veterinary clinic. Our program will provide you with the hands-on training you require to work with Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians.

What will I learn?

In addition to skills development, you will also learn how to manage the day-to-day operations of a veterinary clinic.

Opticians are vision care practitioners who prepare and sell glasses, contacts, and other vision aids by using the prescriptions of Optometrists or Ophthalmologists. Opticians don’t diagnose vision issues, and they don’t handle the manufacturing of glasses and frames. They are the coolest mix of science and fashion - helping clients live their best lives with the perfect vision aids and accessories.

Our Optician Program will provide hands-on practical experience and training in:

• Dispensing: lab safety, operation and use of equipment used for the fabrication of spectacles.
• Clinical Practice: simulated and real life hands-on practice.
• Contact Lens: principles of contact lens assessment, design, fabrication and fitting.
• Ocular Science: anatomy and physiology of the eye, structures of the eye and associated pathologies, as well as the physiological processes related to vision.
• Communications and Professionalism: communication techniques and professional interaction between various eye care practitioners, support staff and clients
• Business and Sales: overview of principles for operating a retail vision care business and selling products to clients

Our Medical Office Administration program provides hands-on practical experience and training in:

• Communications and Interpersonal skills: interacting with clients, confidence and demeanor.
• Dental and Medical Office procedures: record management, phone etiquette, scheduling.
• Keyboarding: training to achieve graduation target of 50 words per minute.
• Medical Transcription: medical documents, chart notes and physical reports.
• Medical Terminology: specifically in Physiology and Anatomy.
• Medical Office Software: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word.
• Personal and Professional Development: resume writing, practical interview skills and practice, time management and professional expectations.
• Simply Accounting: computer based accounting procedures.

Once you have the skills and knowledge, we give you a chance to learn from professionals and practice in a safe and controlled environment. You will be given the opportunity to complete a 6 week practicum placement

Beyond the work of a legal administrative assistant, as a paralegal, you can work with lawyers, crown prosecutors, judges, for federal and provincial courts, with justice departments, insurance companies, and real estate agencies in conducting legal research and helping to ensure the rule of law is upheld. With 18 years of experience in offering this program which is taught by a retired lawyer and a working paralegal, you will graduate with confidence that you possess the necessary skills to succeed in the legal profession.

Child and Youth Care Workers try to improve the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children and adolescents in troubled situations. Many of the children or youths experience multiple challenges or have been diagnosed as having multiple problems. Oulton Child and Youth Care Work program is designed to assist students to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to attain entry-level employment opportunities within the Child and Youth Care field.

The Canadian employment market for veterinary technicians has never been better, especially in the Western provinces where demand far outstrips supply. If you have a genuine interest in animals and enjoy working with people, then this program may be for you. As a veterinary technician, you will become a valuable member of an animal health care team. You will be fully trained and qualified to work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian in large animal, companion animal, specialty and equine practices. Graduates will also find employment in zoos, research laboratories, livestock operations, sales, wildlife rehabilitation centers, animal hospitals and animal shelters.

The Early Childhood Education program is accredited by the province of New Brunswick. It is recognized for its high standards in preparing teachers and caregivers to work with young children from the ages of K-Grade 5. Graduates of this program may become lead teachers, infant/toddler caregivers, family support specialists, after school program leaders and teacher’s assistants. This program is designed to assist students to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to attain employment within the Early Childhood Education field. For your convenience, courses in ECE are offered in the evenings as well as during the day. This program focuses on infants, children, including those with special needs, within the context of the family, the school and the community. This program will also include training in the development of child care services from a small business perspective.

As a dental assistant you will contribute to the everyday success of a dental practice. A key player in the delivery of dental services, the dental assistant will assist the dentist in chair side procedures as well as perform many level two dental assisting skills. Dental assistants are able to perform many skills- such as take impressions, polish, expose radiographs, place rubber dams, fluoride treatments, etc. The objective of the Dental assistant program is to provide students with an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and clinical experience necessary in order to perform various duties of a level 2 dental assistant. The program will offer instruction by dentists, assistants and hygienists with practical experience and is reviewed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Medical Laboratory Assistants’ primary role is clinical support. Medical Laboratory Assistants may work in hospital or clinic settings, in departments such as phlebotomy and specimen receiving, or work directly in specialized laboratories.
