Business and government leaders now recognize that human resources must be managed more effectively if companies are to increase productivity in today’s competitive market. Human Resources graduates have been trained to assist in the HR development process.

The student also has an opportunity in the program to take a minor specialization in either accounting or marketing through their business elective selections (BELE 3000, 4000).

*NOTE: You can start this program in October and January. Applicants should apply at www.ontariocolleges.ca as a Business Fundamentals (0973) student. All students will start in this program and transition into the Business program area of their choice.

The General Arts & Science Diploma provides a broad liberal arts curriculum designed with the advice of our community partners, to prepare students for the workforce, other college programs, or transfer to university. Paired with hands-on instruction, and exciting new experiential learning opportunities, General Arts and Science Diploma graduates leave us prepared for their next steps out into the world.

Core courses provide a solid foundation in communications, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, numeracy, inclusivity, science, and general education. Complementing these are varied electives such as Film, Addictions, Fitness, Psychology, and dozens more. Our students scaffold their studies by earning at least three Advanced Level Learning credits, in both applied and social sciences, math, and/or communications before graduating.

In the third and fourth semesters, GAS Diploma students will learn to research various local issues, and apply the skills and knowledge gained in the program to offer creative solutions to one specific problem in a community.

• Diploma graduates are prepared to enter the workforce directly, or they may continue their studies in advanced level programs at the college.
• Students who self-identify as Pre-University work with the Program Coordinator to further customize their diploma course selection in preparation for university study. Key academic areas (Communications, Applied Science, Social Science, Math) are emphasized in accordance with the student's goals. Potential transfer opportunities exist at a number of Canadian universities; exploring these possibilities is at the discretion of the student. St. Lawrence College offers two programs in accounting: Business Administration – Accounting, a three-year program and Business – Accounting, a two-year program. The Business Administration – Accounting program offers students a more intensive background in financial accounting, corporate finance, cost accounting and taxation during the third year.

The first two semesters of most Business programs offer the same curriculum. The curriculum for the remaining semesters in the accounting programs focuses on the areas of accounting and finance.

The Business Fundamentals program provides students with a broad and exploratory business education. The program will cover business basics such as accounting, marketing, human resources, business mathematics, and business communications. This program can supplement previous post-secondary education to allow students to enter a wide variety of entry level business positions. Additionally this program can allow student to explore further business education and can apply for advanced standing into the second year of the Business, Marketing, and Human Resources programs at the College.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize and function effectively at home, school and in their community. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) can be used to develop new skills including language, social and play skills, self-help skills, academics, motor skills, life skills and appropriate behaviour.

Students in this highly specialized program learn to use a variety of evidence-based approaches to develop the skills of individuals with ASD across the lifespan by reviewing relevant literature, developing intervention plans, implementing programs, and collecting data to ensure intervention strategies effectively meet established goals.

Graduates:

• Understand the characteristics of the full spectrum of ASD and how human development occurs in the neuro-typical population;
• Know the range of evidence-based practices in autism treatment;
• Know how to complete curriculum-based assessments and functional assessments;
• Can plan, implement, and monitor interventions based on these assessment results;
• Know the ethical and professional requirements of working in the field of ABA
• Show leadership in the workplace by contributing knowledge and skills for practical solutions related to the treatment of ASD.

As this is a graduate certificate program, students can expect an intensive workload. Classes combine theory with active learning experiences and group work. Field placements are available in a range of settings and some may require the use of a vehicle.

This program prepares students to work in many different legal environments including law offices, government agencies and ministries, legal clinics, financial institutions, and various business enterprises. Our three-semester curriculum provides a solid foundation in legal procedures and substantive law ap­plicable to authorized areas of work for a law clerk. Emphasis is placed on property law, civil litigation, family law, criminal law, wills and estates, legal research and writing, and business law. Students become familiar with office procedures relating to the production of legal documents and specialized legal software programs. A four-week work place­ment provides students with an opportunity to enhance their classroom experience with practical work experience and exposure to potential employers.
 
A major objective of the program is to develop law clerks who are able to complete independent legal work as part of a team supporting lawyers in the day-to-day routine of their practice. In addition, the combina­tion of business and law subjects provides a strong foundation for career choices in other settings that offer services which apply law to specific interests. Recent employment situations of this type have included real estate offices, home construction companies, insurance companies, financial institutions, government agencies, community legal clinics, academic institutions, and private corporations.

If you want to work in healthcare, have a strong interest in computers, and know that direct patient care isn't for you, becoming a Health Information professional may be the ideal career choice.

This program prepares graduates to work in many different health settings, using the latest technology to contribute to quality patient care. You’ll study bio­medical sciences, digital health, health analytics, privacy and health law.

The Canadian College of Health Information Management is a national, not-for-profit corporation that sets the accreditation standards for educational institutions and certification standards for health information professionals in Canada.

The College, incorporated in 1972, protects the public interest by governing and regulating the professional practice of more than 4,300 certified health information member registrants. In enhancing the status as a regulatory body, the College advances the professionalization of the health information industry and acknowledgement of its professionals as a key driver of policy, funding, and the care that Canadians receive.

The Canadian College of Health Information Management sets the accreditation standards for educational institutions offering health information programs in Canada.

Accreditation demonstrates to the public that a program is aligned to industry standards, as identified through the College’s needs assessment and consultation with industry. It is a voluntary, self-regulatory process to recognize those that meet or exceed the standards set for health information education. The purpose of accrediting programs is to ensure continuous quality improvement of the educational content to support the evolving health information industry.

Combine theoretical study with practical experience in this program which prepares students to work with children (from birth to age 12) and their families in a variety of early childhood settings. Graduates have a firm understanding of human development from birth to 12 years of age, and can use this understanding to create responsive, inclusive, play-based learning environments to best support the child as they develop. Students receive 630 hours of practical experience in a variety of early learning environments during three field placements, starting in the first year of the program. This experience allows students to apply the skills taught in the classroom in real world learning experiences.

The General Arts & Science (Certificate) program offers a foundational year for students preparing for future study in a wide range of fields. For students in the Social Sciences stream, core courses in communications, computers, and personal development are enhanced by courses in Psychology, Sociology, Interper­sonal Skills, Addictions, Stress Management, and Statistics. Graduates of the Social Sci­ences stream are prepared for future study in Community Services programs such as Social Service Worker, Behavioural Science Technol­ogy, and Child and Youth Care. Students wishing to pursue Behavioural Science Technology may require additional courses and should contact the General Arts & Science program coordinator.

For students moving on to other St. Lawrence College programs after completing this one-year program, some of the courses completed as part of this program may transfer. For more information, please consult the appropriate program coordinator of your targeted program.
