St. Lawrence College Culinary Programs offer method-based, hands-on, experiential, work-integrated learning.

Our programs are quality-based with approachable Chef instructors with diverse background experience in a collaborative real-world learning environment.

A combination of both theoretical and applied practical courses in our curriculum are designed to expose students to all aspects of cuisines. Small class sizes facilitate the student’s personal development into a skilled and thoughtful cook.

All culinary programs offer the flexibility to decide if a Culinary Skills Certificate (one-year program) or a Culinary Management Diploma (two-year program) is the right fit.

If you want to work in the growing and highly specialized field of applied behaviour analysis, as well as learn related therapeutic treatments, the Behavioural Science program is where you want to be. For over four decades, the Behavioural Science program has trained students to work front-line with a wide range of client populations in a variety of areas within the human services field. Students are taught how to develop and implement behavioural interventions to teach skills to clients and/or reduce challenging behaviours. 

Students interested in this program should have a strong desire to work with populations who present with complex behavioural, cognitive, emotional and/or psychological issues. They should also be comfortable to work with any population that presents with disruptive behaviours and/or intellectual challenges. Students coming to the program need to be prepared to complete practicum placements working with any of the client populations listed below under career opportunities. Our program trains students in specific treatment options that can be applied to work with any individual who presents with challenges rather than preparing students to work with only one or a specific client population.

Highlights

• Our students learn how to:
  • Teach children to manage their behaviour and learn adaptive skills;
  • Assist people with intellectual disabilities to access community resources, learn new skills, and live more independently;
  • Teach youth at risk to improve social skills, manage interfering behaviours, and meet treatment goals;
  • Support persons with mental health challenges to reduce their stress, build self-management skills and organize daily activities;
  • Assist clients with acquired brain injuries to learn functional skills and develop life skills;
  • Work with offenders in correctional facilities to build positive skills and behaviours;
  • Recognize what an addiction is and understand various ways to prevent addiction and manage recovery.

Students complete four field placements where they receive experience and practical training in the skills they have learned in the classroom. Our program has many field placement possibilities in a variety of interesting and dynamic settings.

St. Lawrence College offers two programs in accounting: Business Administration – Accounting, a three-year program and Business – Accounting, a two-year program. The Business Administration – Accounting program offers students a more intensive background in financial accounting, corporate finance, cost accounting and taxation during the third year.

The first two semesters of most Business programs offer the same curriculum. The curriculum for the remaining semesters in the accounting programs focuses on the areas of accounting and finance.

This one-year certificate program in Media Arts Fundamentals provides students with an opportunity to explore the exciting variety of disciplines and careers in media, design, and the arts.

Courses in professional communications, digital media applications, and academic preparation provide a foundation for the program, while a variety of media-arts electives allow students to earn credits toward specialized two- and three-year diploma programs in Graphic Design, Visual & Creative Arts - Fine Arts, Music & Digital Media, Advertising & Marketing Communications, and General Arts & Science.

Courses in the final semester focus on professionalism, career exploration and the preparation of a media-arts portfolio that students can tailor to academic or career pathways that interest them most. Interesting community partnerships with Kingston's rich and vibrant arts community, as well as guest speakers and mentors with careers in the media arts will help students decide their next steps into this vibrant sector of the economy.

Are you interested in following your passion with a career in the food industry that encompasses food safety, sustainability in food systems including farming and fishing, food production and processing, distribution, preparation and consumption? If you are, then this is a program that allows you to explore diverse opportunities in an industry that is a vital part of the economy and the community.

This is a unique program that is unlike traditional food and culinary programs. Taught by a multidisciplinary faculty team, it affords the learner the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of all segments of the supply chain from farm to table. Graduates of this program will have opportunities that span the entire food industry from food services businesses to multinational food conglomerates.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
This program offers courses that include hands-on training to permit learners to understand and experience food preparation and can relate to the importance of sanitation, and quality assurance. The program also offers the opportunities to experience research and innovation related to processes for new food products. Case studies are an integral part of the program that will look at unique safety regulations associated with genetic modification or bio-engineering of food.

Learners will use their gained knowledge in food chemistry, food safety and security, the effects of food on population health to plan portion-controlled menus. In order to achieve this the learner applies the principles and regulations associated with food procurement, preparation maintain safety and quality standards.

Do you have an interest in fitness and health, or helping others reach their fitness and health goals? If so, this program is for you!

This two-year curriculum includes courses in exercise science, fitness, health promotion, business management, and human relations as well as personal and professional development. Several of the courses will be delivered in the Student Health & Athletic Centre on the Kingston Campus, which provides a state-of-the-art training facility. Students will have the opportunity to obtain additional certifications including the nationally recognized Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness and Spin certifications through Ontario Fitness Council (OFC).

Graduates will offer prospective employ­ers 400 hours of practical experience in the workforce gained from two 5-week work placements in areas of health promotion, inclusive fitness, injury prevention and management, fitness assess­ment and/or personal training and occupa­tional health and corporate wellness.

A student graduating from the Office Administration - Legal/Health Services program will graduate with two diplomas, Office Administration - Legal and Office Administration - Health Services, opening the door to a variety of employment opportunities in both the private and public work sectors. Graduate employment rates released in the fall 2019 showed 95%-100% employment.

Students will gain knowledge in the following areas:

• Technical skills:
  • Advanced level Office 365/2019 cloud-based computer application skills including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, OneNote etc.
  • Outlook 365 - students become proficient in producing professional email communications, creating folders to stay organized, use of Outlook calendar to book appointments and schedule meetings.
  • Additional software applications include PCLaw, The Conveyancer, Teraview, Automated Civil Litigation (ACL), Accuro EMR, Adobe Acrobat DC Pro and Sage 50.
  • Students will be required to achieve a keyboarding speed of 50-60 GWPM.
  • Students learn to share and edit documents in a cloud-based environment.  Using MS Teams, collaboration software students learn how to book, attend and chair virtual meetings.
• Soft skills:
  • Client, patient and customer relationships are built on the use of effective and consistent communication as well as the ability to uphold and maintain confidentiality. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively are skills that are highly valued.
  • Employers seek office administrators that are highly organized, forward thinking and have the ability to problem solve.  Students have the opportunity to enhance these skills through learning by example with regular classroom exercises and participating in the student work placement experience.

Graduates of this program can move forward into careers in law enforcement, border security, corrections, assisting at-risk youth, supporting vulnerable individuals in local communities and careers in the education sector. In preparation for these careers, this program offers two robust Professional Placements in the community, totalling 400 hours.

Graduates can move forward into these careers by being prepared to carry out duties and responsibilities in the prevention, management and resolution of conflict, crises, and emergency situations in institutional and community justice settings using various intervention strategies. Graduates gain skills to work with and support diverse and at-risk populations, including those with addiction and mental health struggles

Program delivery fosters the development of skills in self-growth, professionalism, empathy, compassion, cultural competence, communication, nonverbal communication, active listening, adaptability, intuition, building a rapport with individuals, problem diagnosis, problem solving, critical and creative thinking, reflective practice, teamwork, career planning, and best practices to work with and support individuals in conflict with the law, at risk for being in conflict with the law, and/or offenders. Program delivery also fosters the development of awareness and knowledge of holistic wellness.

The Community and Justice Services Program continues the historical legacy of quality established by the Correctional Worker Program. Established in the early 1970’s, this program was one of the first offering career training for correctional and community justice work.

Get started on your career as a Health Informa­tion professional and help fill the national shortage of skilled practitioners. If you want to work in healthcare, have a strong interest in computers, and know that direct patient care isn't for you, becoming a Health Information professional may be the ideal career choice.

This program prepares graduates to work in many different health settings, using the latest technology to contribute to quality patient care. You’ll study bio­medical sciences, digital health, health analytics, privacy and health law.

The Canadian College of Health Information Management is a national, not-for-profit corporation that sets the accreditation standards for educational institutions and certification standards for health information professionals in Canada.

The College, incorporated in 1972, protects the public interest by governing and regulating the professional practice of more than 4,300 certified health information member registrants. In enhancing the status as a regulatory body, the College advances the professionalization of the health information industry and acknowledgement of its professionals as a key driver of policy, funding, and the care that Canadians receive.

The Canadian College of Health Information Management sets the accreditation standards for educational institutions offering health information programs in Canada.

Accreditation demonstrates to the public that a program is aligned to industry standards, as identified through the College’s needs assessment and consultation with industry. It is a voluntary, self-regulatory process to recognize those that meet or exceed the standards set for health information education. The purpose of accrediting programs is to ensure continuous quality improvement of the educational content to support the evolving health information industry.

The Office Administration - Health Services Program prepares graduates for current and future office trends. Experienced faculty prepare students to work in dynamic business environments. Students become extremely computer literate through instructional scaffolding. Faculty provide a supportive and professional environment that allows students to build on their current level of knowledge, which leads to mastery of the skills required in a business office.
