If you enjoy thinking about life’s big questions, you might be a natural philosopher. Philosophy engages in disciplined and imaginative thinking about the philosophical questions common to all humans by studying the works of great philosophers. Through analysis and discussion, you’ll learn how to think critically, and understand the origins of the ideas that influence us today.

Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom. Rather than studying a particular aspect of human history or culture, philosophy takes a step back and tries to understand the nature of all inquiry. Students of philosophy examine fundamental beliefs about who we are and the world we live in – beliefs most people take to be true but never examine systematically and critically. Philosophers consider such questions as: What is the meaning of life? How should I live my life? Why be moral? What is the best form of government? Are human beings immortal? Does God exist? What is knowledge? Does the world appear to us as it really is? What makes something right, or good, or beautiful?

If coming to an understanding of the human condition is the goal of a liberal arts education, then philosophy is essential to it. But philosophy also has a practical side, which we see whenever we debate social and political questions concerning the environment and our obligations to future generations, the distribution of wealth and opportunity in society, gender equity, the relationship between science and religion, and so on. Philosophy helps us to identify and defend what is most valuable to us.

The UW Philosophy Program prides itself on being small and student-focused; this is a place where you can work closely with professors and other students in small classes, reading great philosophers from the past, and thinking and writing about the big questions.

Are you interested in issues affecting our environment? Environmental Studies and Sciences combines many different perspectives to understand the changes in our environment, while acknowledging human impacts and providing a framework to develop solutions for environmental programs. You can choose your course of study from six different subject areas including Chemistry, Forest Ecology, Forest Policy and Management, Global Environmental Systems, Issues in Sustainability, and Urban Environments

The specialization in Creative Writing focuses not only on reading and studying works of literary art, but on learning how to create them as well. See the Frequently Asked Questions, above, for more information.

Sample Program
This is only one example of one possible path through the program. Students should normally begin with  2102 and 2002 and then take 3101. After that, they may take CW courses in any order.  Paths will differ, depending on students' interests, the number of courses they take each year, and which courses are offered in any given year. Theatre and Film – one of the largest in Canada – includes the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in one of six different areas of study: Acting and Directing, Design, Drama in Education, Filmmaking, Playwriting, Stage Management or Production. The Department also offers a BA (Honours) in Acting, Directing, Design, Playwriting, and Stage Management and Production.  Your coursework will encompass a full range of practical and theoretical study, and will prepare you for an exciting career in the arts.

Objectives & Outcomes:-
The use of large volumes of data to forecast and predict human behaviour, business, and socio-economic outcomes has accelerated rapidly in recent years. This program builds foundational skills in data science with a specialization on the use of predictive models to forecast outcomes. Students will learn to apply data science and predictive modelling to provide insights, predictions, and operationalize the use of data for competitive and social benefits within an organization.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscience business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. Computer-based simulations, experiential exercises, guest speakers, and field trips are also used to connect course material to the business world.  A new co-op work study program allows students to add career real work experience to their UW Degree.

Bachelor of Business Administration (4 years):-

The four-year BBA prepares students for managerial work and also for further study in business administration such as an MBA or other graduate degree program.  In the four-year program, you can (and many students do) elect to take a 'general stream' degree, which allows maximum flexibility for course selection. Other students elect to narrow their studies into their choice of five Areas of Concentration:

• Marketing
• International Business
• Co-operative Enterprises
• Accounting
• Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour

It is not unusual for students to pursue two Concentrations simultaneously (e.g., Marketing and International Business) in our four-year program.

The Bachelor of Business Administration degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, or in the public or non-profit sectors. Our aim is to graduate socially and ethically responsible students capable of succeeding in a rapidly changing world. The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills.

The 4-year BBA offers a General Stream as well as four Concentration Areas: Accounting, Marketing, International Business and Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour. The 4-year BBA prepares students for managerial work in many industries and is a solid foundation for graduate business degree programs

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

Students interested in registering in this specialization should consult a faculty advisor prior to Registration. The 2016-17 faculty advisor is Dr. Andrew Burke ([email protected]).

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

The Information Systems (IS) stream is aimed at students interested in focusing on information and business needs of IT industry. The new stream is intended to prepare students in information oriented courses, and also in system and Internet based technologies. Sample courses include: Internet programming, database design and development, software requirements and design, telecommunications, business application systems and eCommerce. One advantage of this stream is that students can easily combine this stream as a double major with another department for a Bachelors degree in arts or science.
