Welcome to the History of Art programme at the University of Winnipeg. We are a dedicated group of scholars committed to the study of art, broadly defined, as it reveals the past and informs the future. Drawing on the experience of our scholars, the expertise of local curators and a rewarding relationship with the local arts community, together we are able to deliver a strong, vibrant and practical curriculum focussed on excellence, accessability and innovation.

French Studies offers 3 different undergraduate Major degree programs (a 3-year Bachelor of Arts,  a 4-year Bachelor of Arts and an Honours Bachelor of Arts), as well as an undergraduate Minor degree program. Democracy began in Greece. The Roman Empire rose and fell. There were extraordinary achievements in art, literature, and philosophy in both Greece and Rome. All this is highlighted by the legacies of great writers such as Plato, Sophocles, Virgil, and Cicero. Ancient history is surprisingly pervasive in today's cultures, religions, movies, literature, politics, journalism, and advertising. If you have a desire to understand our modern world, studying Classics is an ideal way to begin.

Classics is the study of Greek and Roman culture, society, and history through a variety of disciplinary approaches: archaeology, philology (the study of Latin and ancient Greek), literature, art history, social history, political history and thought, philosophy, religion and mythology.

The three year major was designed primarily for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. These students would take the required courses as per their chosen level they wish to teach in the school system (early, middle or senior years). In the third year of study, students would apply to the faculty of Education for a two year after degree. The student would have both a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and a Bachelor of Education.

Some students choose to use the three year degree as an entry level degree to other professional degrees such as the Master degree in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medicine and Physicians Assistant program to name a few. You should be aware that a three year degree is less competitive than a 4 year degree and most universities now offer four year degrees only.

This program gives you an opportunity to study the rich heritage of the Mennonites and their contribution to society. Mennonite Studies is an interdisciplinary program that combines studies in history, religion, culture, and literature as they relate to Mennonites.

A major in Mennonite Studies focuses on the Mennonites' culture of nonviolence, history of migration, and struggle to define themselves as an ethno-religious group.

Theatre and Film – one of the largest in Canada – includes the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in one of six different areas of study: Acting and Directing, Design, Drama in Education, Filmmaking, Playwriting, Stage Management or Production. The Department also offers a BA (Honours) in Acting, Directing, Design, Playwriting, and Stage Management and Production.  Your coursework will encompass a full range of practical and theoretical study, and will prepare you for an exciting career in the arts.

From essential training in project management and business writing, to web security, information architecture, and network administration this program develops a complete skill set for IT professionals. Graduates gain experience with a wide variety of web programming technologies (including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and PHP programming.

OBJECTIVES

• Develop hands-on skills in web development applications and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, PHP, APS.net, and Java;
• Apply Adobe Photoshop to the visual design of Websites;
• Gain a solid understanding of best practices in search engine optimization (SEO);
• Create web pages in past, current, and emerging standards using HTML, XHTML, CSS, and XML
• Create rich multimedia files using Flash
• Use, edit and customize Dreamweaver and a variety of content management systems including Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla for agile web development purposes;
• Plan, design, and create relational database systems;
• Understand TCP/IP and Networking in general to help trouble shoot issues and design solutions to potential performance problems;
• Gain an understanding of security problems in order to install, set-up, and secure a Web server.

The Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at The University of Winnipeg is student-centred with small classes and labs and accessible professors. Our professors have expertise and research interests in areas that include adapted physical activity, physical activity and aging, sports nutrition, coaching, sport and exercise psychology, motor behaviour, exercise physiology, biomechanics and prevention, care and treatment of muscle, bone and joint injuries.

Professionals in the field of Kinesiology are interested in increasing physical activity participation, enhancing sport performance,development of physical literacy, the technical and tactical aspects of coaching, the short and long term effects of exercise and the effect of physical activity on society.

The specialization in Creative Writing focuses not only on reading and studying works of literary art, but on learning how to create them as well. See the Frequently Asked Questions, above, for more information.

Sample Program
This is only one example of one possible path through the program. Students should normally begin with  2102 and 2002 and then take 3101. After that, they may take CW courses in any order.  Paths will differ, depending on students' interests, the number of courses they take each year, and which courses are offered in any given year. Become a highly-skilled communicator ready to take on public relations in both corporate and not-for-profit environments. With a broad foundation of PR and marketing-specific knowledge, this program emphasizes best practices, tackles current and emerging issues, and develops the skill set to be a leader in the field.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify, analyze and influence organizational objectives, communications strategies and key interest groups
• Guide management on key business and policy decisions
• Develop public relations strategies that create awareness and favourable perception, and/or promote your products and services and set measurable objectives from which to evaluate their effectiveness
• Build collegial and cooperative relationships with a variety of public interest groups, internal and external clients, and the media
• Design and implement a media relations strategy expanding your visibility in the community
• Analyze consume buying patterns, employ marketing tools and research methodologies to determine environmental and competitive factors affecting products and services, and develop new products and/or services meriting consumer interest and increasing market share
• Master public relations communications writing template including: a well-tooled press kit, news releases, annual reports, newsletters, brochure content, and personality profiles
• Plan and direct the crisis and change management process
• Coordinate and prepare material for internal and external promotional publications, including planning articles, editing copy, supervising print preparation, distributing publications
• Gain an understanding of digital communication technologies, their impact in traditional approaches to public relations and marketing, and how to adapt print-based collaterals for this new medium
• Exercise sound financial decision-making and budgeting skills
