Native Studies is an exciting area of study that seeks to understand the experiences and lives of Indigenous people and communities past, present, and future – not on their own but in their relationships with those of settler society.

The BA in Native Studies degree combines the insights of many traditional university disciplines, such as anthropology, history, law, and sociology, along with Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. Graduates of this degree have one of highest employment rates of any faculty!

Why study Mining Engineering?

Most resources that cannot be grown or harvested need to be extracted from the Earth by mining engineers. Mining engineers are involved in every aspect of resource extraction, applying science and technology to plan, design, manage, and optimize mining and mineral projects around the world.

The Mining Engineering program at the University of Alberta is the biggest of its kind in Canada, offering a broad-based program covering subjects ranging from surface and underground mining to physical and mathematical sciences. Our graduates are well equipped to compete and succeed in a variety of careers in industry and government.

Co-op option
This degree can be taken as a Co-op (co-operative education) program. Through the Co-op program, you will have the opportunity to complete paid, supervised work terms throughout your degree. Co-op programs are great way to challenge yourself, gain relevant work experience, and make connections to industry before you graduate!

Most co-op programs include five work terms lasting four months each, in addition to the usual eight terms (four years) of full-time study. Therefore, co-op programs require five years to complete.

• Develop solutions for environmental issues such as conservation of land, water and biodiversity or adaptation to climate change.
• Explore how interactions between science, society and the economy influence environmental management decisions.
• Participate in a three-week field school where you spend every day outside, learning by doing.
• Apply your knowledge and skills while completing a fourth-year project-based capstone course that examines issues faced by industry, government and environmental organizations.
• Join the Agrology profession (Alberta Institute of Agrologists) and take a leadership role as a professional agrologist in Alberta.
• Join students in the Northern ENCS Program and spend a semester at Yukon College in Whitehorse, getting hands on experience and credit towards your degree.

BSc in Environmental and Conservation Sciences Majors
BSc Environmental Conservation/BA Native Studies
Learn how Aboriginal history, politics, and cultural values influence natural resource management. Graduate with two degrees in five years—Bachelor of Science in Environmental & Conservation Science and Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies .

Conservation Biology
Apply the principles of biology, ecology, social science, economics, and statistics to the conservation of species and landscapes.

Environmental Economics & Policy
Develop skills in the economics analysis and policy process associated with environmental issues.

Human Dimensions of Environmental Management
Use collective action, institutions, policy and management to address challenges in environmental/ natural resource management.

Land Reclamation
Develop the natural and social sciences to understand, assess, and minimize the impacts of human activities on natural resources, with an emphasis on soil, plant and water health.

Northern Systems
Develop solutions to issues such as global climate change, decreasing non-renewable energy resources, land use, changes in water quantity and quality, and wildlife conservation. Gain insight into northern and native studies content, reflecting northern environmental, economic, and social contexts.

Wildlife & Rangeland Management
Learn to manage soil, plant, and animal relationships on both private and public lands. Gain an understanding of grazing, intensive agriculture, forestry, and recreational activities.

This combined program, offered jointly with the Faculty of Education, allows you to earn two degrees in five years, preparing you to become a teacher for Grades 7-12 while providing you with additional expertise. The first three years of this program are taken in the Faculty of Native Studies, while the last two years are taken in the Faculty of Education. You can choose to major in either Native Studies or Cree.

Why the Faculty of Native Studies?

We are the only independent Faculty of Native Studies in Canada, with small class sizes and a diverse student population of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. We are student-centered, with a close-knit community of students, professors, and staff. We host regular Tea and Bannock potlucks, an annual tipi raising and take-down, and Games Night with the Dean.

We are research-focused, with opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research projects. Our courses incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge and heritage as well as contemporary Indigenous experiences.

The Bachelor of Commerce is a four year degree program. The program provides students with a background in diverse areas of Business along with in-depth study of a specific area of interest.
Students are also able to explore disciplines offered in other University of Alberta faculties through program electives providing a well rounded degree. The BCom program provides students with a basis for self-learning through actual experience and the opportunity to develop comprehensive analytical skills.

International Business
Accounting for differences in language, culture, and law in our globalized economy makes doing business across international borders a specialized and challenging field.
This major widens your perspectives, teaches new approaches, and prepares you to do business in the global marketplace. Differences in language, culture, and law mean that business managers must be prepared to tackle these issues.

Anthropology explores the origins and history of the human species through investigating biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity in human populations. You will be able to take courses related to four major subfields of Anthropology: Archaeology, Biological, Linguistic, and Cultural Anthropology. Our faculty members have expertise in a range of societies and cultures, past and present, and a range of world areas. Through your courses you may be exposed to laboratories where you can identify and interpret artifacts and fossils, or the opportunity to conduct and present original research.

Why take the Honors program?

Do you want to gain research experience for graduate studies, refine your writing for a professional career, or interact with peers who have similar academic interests and passions? Then the Anthropology Honors program is right for you!
• This major can also be taken as part of a Bachelor of Arts degree.

No environment affects us as profoundly as that of the family. Family Science examines topics and teaches skills in areas such as parent-child relationships, family relations, community diversity, community development, sexuality, family challenges, aging, family finance, and more.

The Physiology Honors degree provides an in-depth understanding of the way cells function and how tissues and organs work. This program has a strong focus on human physiology, with a wide range of courses is available for students with interests in particular branches of the life sciences, including cell and molecular biology, endocrinology, cardiovascular physiology, and neurobiology.

This program allows you to study a diverse mix of courses in mathematics, including Computing Science, Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, and Statistics, preparing you to teach at the junior high and high school level.

Why take the BSc / BEd combined degree?
