Microbiology programs are designed to give students a good understanding of microorganisms, including diversity, ecology, physiology, molecular genetics, current approaches in bacterial genomics/proteomics, and microbial associations with animal hosts and the environments. Such knowledge will provide the basis for further work with microbes in medicine, agricultural industries (including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage) and the environment (surveillance and bioremediation).

Co-Op Options
Microbiology co-op is a five-year program, which includes four work terms. Below is an example of how the academic and work sequence will look for a Microbiology major.*

To be eligible to continue in the Co-op program, students must meet a minimum 70% cumulative average requirement after second semester, as well as meet all work term requirements. Biological and Medical Physics leverages physics to help solve complex challenges and opportunities in human health and medical fields.

The biological and medical physics major prepares students for dynamic careers in medical and health fields. Students take an integrated MATH and PHYS course in first year along with the chemistry and biology taken by other Bachelor of Science students. Second through fourth year, students will focus on physics courses and also include mathematics and biochemistry courses, along with courses specific to. biological physics or medical physic streams. Unique to the University of Guelph, students will also take a Science Communications course where they develop activities to help people understand the concepts of physics.

Learning Outcomes
You can expect to learn how to:

• Demonstrate mastery in advanced Electricity and Magnetism, Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics, Optics, and Quantum Mechanics
• Apply Intermediate level Mathematics techniques to enhance understanding in the aforementioned major subject areas
• Demonstrate advanced laboratory skills in order to practically realize concepts in Electricity & Magnetism, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Quantum Physics, Optics, Nuclear Physics, Spectroscopy, and Electronics and apply these skills in self-directed learning
• Apply modern computational techniques to investigate various physical phenomena and demonstrate proficiency in mathematical software such as Maple, MatLab, and/or Mathematica

Co-Op Options

Students in this co-op major complete a course, COOP*1100, in the fall semester of second year.  This course helps students prepare for their work term by developing professional attitudes and skills for the workplace. This course also provides students with a toolkit of resume and cover letter writing as well as interview skills, which helps students to apply, interview and secure their work term positions. 

The Honours B.Sc. major in Nutritional and Nutraceutical Sciences is an exciting and unique major in Canada. Offered within the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, this major will provide you with a broad and basic grounding in the biology of nutrition, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and nutraceuticals.

The study of Nutritional and Nutraceutical Sciences is concerned with understanding the contribution of food, beverage and nutritional supplement consumption to growth, development of optimal biological function, maintenance of health, and treatment of disease. This major will also explore how we can use nutrients, minerals and food’s chemical properties to develop innovative products that will benefit humans, animals and the environment.

Beginning in your first year with a course entitled “Biological Concepts of Health” and followed in second year by “Fundamentals of Nutrition” you will examine the biology of nutrition from a whole organism level to the molecular and cellular aspects of metabolism and a functioning systems. In your third or fourth years, you will complete courses examining the efficacy, regulatory policies and relationships of functional foods and nutraceuticals to food and drugs and the roles nutrients and phytochemicals play in maintaining health and preventing/treating disease. You may also have an opportunity to complete a research course with a faculty member in a discipline related to nutrition, food, nutraceuticals, health and disease. The program is supported by a number of facilities on campus that you can be involved with during your undergraduate degree including the Human Nutraceutical Research Unit, Health and Performance Centre and the Food Technology Centre.

Learning Outcomes
You can expect to learn how to:

• Apply an integrated and broad foundation in life sciences to problems in human nutrition, nutri-pharmacology, nutri-toxicology and health.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of human nutrition, nutri-pharmacology and nutri-toxicology on health and performance and provide mechanistic explanations for associated biological events at the molecular, cellular and whole organism levels of organization.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the science of prospective health; the pivotal role of individual nutrigenomic and nutri-epigenetic analyses and the critical role of evidence-based, lifestyle medicine in the effective application of this prospective health approach to healthcare.
• Define and analyze the interactions of nutrition and exercise on the metabolic control of health and disease.
• Critically analyze experimental design, data analysis and interpretation in human nutrition, nutri-pharmacology and nutri-toxicology research.

Food has a powerful influence on the lives of individuals and populations. The Applied Human Nutrition program provides a thorough understanding of all aspects of human nutrition. Lectures provide core learnings that are grounded in the biological and social sciences. Labs allow for the application of classroom instruction. New topics and emerging research are explored in small group seminars. Students may enrol in an area of emphasis in dietetics. This dietetic education program is accredited under the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP) and prepares students for eligibility for registration with a provincial dietetics regulatory body.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) major prepares students to assume positions of responsibility within the world’s largest industry.

In the first two years of study, students are introduced to foundational business skills and knowledge; and provided with an in-depth overview of the industry’s three sectors: hotel and lodging; restaurant and foodservice; and tourism.

By the end of the second year, students must choose one of those sectors as their area of emphasis. For the remainder of the program, the courses and learning opportunities that students encounter have one goal: to help them cultivate the knowledge, skills and understanding required of a managerial leader in their chosen area.

Topics of study for all three areas of emphasis includes:

An integral part of the HTM major is experiential learning, which means that theory is balanced with practice. Students are encouraged to participate in guided learning opportunities outside the conventional classroom, such as independent study courses, study abroad, and numerous networking events with industry leaders.

Explore the powerful inner workings of the human mind, how it works and how it affects behaviour. Analyze the emotions and motivations of individuals and groups. You'll gain a broad understanding of psychological theory and methodology including courses in research methodology, social psychology, cognitive psychology and behavioural neuroscience. Learn what makes us human and how the principles of psychology can be used to improve life.

Computer Engineering is a field of engineering that focuses on the design and organization of computer systems. Graduates in Computer Engineering are able to apply mathematical, scientific and engineering principles to design and integrate computer systems suitable for applications in a wide range of fields. The program provides students with a common base of knowledge essential to computer engineering and then allows them to select from a menu of electives to attain a degree of specialization in one of four areas or to choose electives to broaden their knowledge base. Elective concentrations are available in areas of Electronic Design automation, Software Design, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Microsystems.

Co-op
The Co-op program in Computer Engineering is a five year program, including five work terms. Students must complete a Fall, Winter and Summer work term and must follow the academic work schedule as outlined below (also found on the Co-operative Education website: https://www.recruitguelph.ca/cecs/). Position yourself as an expert in interesting and puzzling issues of our time, like fluctuations in interest rates and oil prices, or the implications of continental free trade. Integrate pure and applied economic theories with modes of thought, techniques and critical analysis drawn from the arts. 

The Real Estate and Housing major in the B.Comm. program is one of only a few undergraduate programs in Canada that specialize in the real estate sector. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of residential and commercial/investment real estate. Topics such as the development, financing, valuation, market analysis and management of real estate are taught in the context of economic, legal, political and social factors affecting this large and growing field of business in Canada and the world.

The purpose of this major is to develop the conceptual, analytical and management skills required for careers in real estate and housing. Students graduate with a degree that can lead to a variety of professional positions in the private or public sectors of the Canadian real estate industry or they can continue on to graduate work in business, planning or the social sciences.
