Philosophy is the study of reality, knowledge, values, logic and related topics. The existence of free will or God, the nature of science, art, emotions and language, ethical theory, proofs, fallacies, and so on. It is one of the oldest subjects of study in the Western world. Philosophy students are trained to think abstractly and write clearly, and rationally assess ideas in a way that few others can equal.

Good accounting results in good decision-making. The study of accounting gives students the knowledge and professional judgment to determine the most useful way to communicate financial information.

The accounting major is the first step in obtaining a thorough understanding of accounting. The accounting major will give you the knowledge and professional judgment to determine the most useful way to communicate financial information.

After graduation, many students continue in their accounting studies and pursue one of the following professional designations: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA), or Certified Management Accountant (CMA.)

Film Studies at the U of M provides students with a unique opportunity to create a feature length film, as well as make short films, working with their peers in a collective context which is an experience very different from that at other institutions. Our faculty have broad mix of scholarly and practical expertise in areas that address multimedia issues in areas like film and surveillance, documentary, and television. Faculty teach a mix of courses on topics such as film aesthetics, video gaming, international cinema and filmmaking every year. Our students all have access to the Media Lab, a post-production space that offers students the use of cutting-edge software and an extensive DVD lending library. Our film production equipment includes up-to-date digital cameras, sound recording technology, a Steadi-Cam harness, and more.

The actuarial profession involves the application of mathematical disciplines; particularly probability, statistics and risk theory, to real life financial problems involving future uncertainty. The analysis involved helps people and organizations plan for and reduce financial risk in diverse areas such as life, health, disability, property and casualty insurance, annuities, pension plans and employee benefit plans.

Flexibility
Students in the Actuarial Studies major:  

• Are required to take the same business core courses as in other majors providing the opportunity to study other business-related areas   
• Can take as little as four actuarial courses to claim their major in actuarial mathematics
• Are able to pursue a double major in actuarial mathematics and a second subject if they choose
• Have access to the business library that provides updated study materials that help students prepare for professional actuarial exams

The University of Manitoba’s Italian program allows students to master the Italian language and acquire cultural knowledge. An emphasis is placed on language skills as well as in inter-cultural skills.

Interesting courses and unique opportunities

• The Italian courses offered at the University of Manitoba not only teach grammar and contemporary literature but also touch upon Italian culture and history. In-class opportunities for conversation and comprehension are abundant and designed to facilitate practical experience in using the language.
• Guest lecturers are brought in to speak on a variety of subjects, and there are frequent film showings.

Agronomy is the study and practice of field crop production, and the management of land and water resources. It aims to meet the demands of producing food, feed, fuel and bioproducts while maintaining a sustainable environment.

The Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Agronomy teaches students how to manage land for crop production. Students explore soil and landscape fundamentals, soil and water management, cropping systems, crop physiology and the biology of seed plants. Our program explores agronomy around the world, but places an emphasis on Western Canada.

Co-op programs
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student's academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).

Astronomy and astrophysics examine the universe, galaxies and stars as well as phenomena such as the birth of stars, how explosions of stars create fast moving cosmic ray particles and pulsars, and how the rotation of a galaxy reveals the presence of dark matter. A planetarium and two astronomical observatories enhance this program.
