Criminology is concerned with the complex social phenomena of crime and criminalization. The criminology program engages students in a systematic study of the nature and extent of crime and criminalization along with the array of agencies and programs designed to prevent, control, and respond to criminal activity over time and place. Attention is given to specific issues related to gender, race, class and crime, youth and crime, violence and victimization, criminal law and procedure, policing and crime prevention, restorative justice, and global criminology. Courses in the criminology program are taught primarily from a sociological perspective, with emphasis placed on research, program development, and policy analysis.

The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Historical study explains the past to the present and illuminates the present through the past.  The History curriculum offers students opportunities to discover, understand, and assess past time and change over time.  Historical study develops strong writing skills and critical analysis.  As well, it provides training in skills of intellectual enquiry and judgment to prepare for students’ future lives.  In addition, the curriculum prepares graduates who will become professional historians. 

As society increasingly moves into the digital age, our need for those who can understand the management of information technology and information systems grow.

If you like working with technology and people, then a major in Management Information Systems is for you. You will learn how to determine what the information needs of a company are and how to design information systems that get real business done. You will study various kinds of software and learn how to manage an IT Project from start to finish.

The job market for MIS professionals is growing with an ongoing shortage across Manitoba and Canada. Our alumni are workings at companies like Great West Life, IBM, Investors Group, Wawanesa, and Standard Aero. Organizations will always have a need for in-house personnel or consultants with the MIS skill set taught at the Asper School of Business.

The Department of Religion at the University of Manitoba focuses on three areas of study: religions in the West (especially Christianity and Judaism), religions in the East (Islam, Hinduism, Yoga, Buddhism), and religion and culture. Method and theory is an integral part of our program as is an emphasis on world religions. Courses are mainly tradition based or topics based. Our topical courses are comparative, for example, dealing with death and mourning rituals in world religions.

Biology is the study of life as it has evolved and is evolving on earth. All aspects of life are examined, from molecular processes inside cells, to large scale ecological interactions between organisms in their environment, and how the changing environment shapes these interactions.

The millennium from the end of the Roman empire to the Renaissance (500-1500 C.E.) was a formative period in the history of European civilization. This program offers students a broad approach to the period, through its literature, art, languages, history, music, and more.

The Diploma in Dental Hygiene is a 3-year program that prepares students to work as dental hygienists in a variety of employment settings. Dental hygiene is a self-regulated health service profession concerned primarily with the prevention of oral disease and the promotion of optimum oral health. As a licensed professional, the dental hygienists' scope of practice is regulated by provincial legislation. The dental hygiene process of care consists of five components: assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate, which guide dental hygiene practice in every setting. Dental hygienists work in private dental offices, community health centres, educational institutions, personal care homes and various other environments.

The International Business major offers a variety of courses designed to help students understand and manage globalization from a strategic and functional perspective. Courses are taught by faculty members from diverse geographical backgrounds who have vast experience living overseas and conducting research and business abroad. In addition to imparting knowledge through relevant coursework, there are several international exchange programs that provide an opportunity for students to develop their skills in a direct manner by living and studying abroad. 

Biosystems Engineering brings engineering to life by integrating life sciences with engineering, from the molecular to the ecosystem. Biosystems engineers help to create new technologies for the well-being of humans and animals, and the preservation and enhancement of natural resources and the environment. The main areas of study are environmental engineering, bio-processing (food and pharmaceutical), bio-environmental control, bio-medical engineering, soil and water engineering, agricultural equipment, and light structures. Biosystems Engineering also provides an excellent pathway to the Faculty of Medicine.
