Students will acquire knowledge and have opportunities to apply what they learn in various types of organizations and contexts related to sport, leisure and physical activity. They will gain theoretical and practical training in governance and management principles, related to planning, policy making, marketing, entrepreneurship, and communications. Students will critically examine the impacts of organizations, sport events and festivals, and learn to evaluate the influence of policy relating to sport, leisure and physical activity, on individuals and society.

Students will acquire the management skills needed to understand the Canadian sport system, its organizations and people. For example, they will gain an enriched understanding of governmental, for-profit, and non-profit organizations in sport and leisure, ranging from local to international organizations in professional sport, municipal recreation departments, sport events, and the commercial sector. Students will receive training informed by social sciences (e.g., management, sociocultural, leisure studies, psychology). Management courses will give students opportunities to gain competencies in the planning, organizing, marketing, leadership, and evaluation of sport, leisure and recreation organizations and events. Students will acquire cutting-edge knowledge and skills related to the latest developments in branding and marketing a sport, leisure or recreation organization, and managing volunteers in a sport event or festival. Sociocultural courses will enable students to learn about historical and contemporary issues affecting how people interact in organizations and in society. Students will have opportunities to understand the reasons behind current situations and gain skills in critical inquiry they can use to facilitate change in organizations.

Graduates will have developed management skills allowing them to better integrate into the workplace upon graduation and contribute to their organization and society. They will have acquired skills to provide advocacy and recommendations to policy and decision-makers at all levels of the sport system, from the municipality to Sport Canada, and international sport organizations. Our graduates will also have gained interpersonal, networking, and critical thinking skills, which will benefit their job marketability. They can pursue career-paths in various segments of the sport, leisure and recreation industries (government, non-profit or for-profit) at the local, regional, national and international levels. The emphasis of our program on both foundational knowledge but also how knowledge translates into action enables our graduates to pursue different occupational roles. For example, our graduates can take on leadership, management, and governance roles in local and national amateur sport organizations (e.g., sport clubs, university athletics department, Olympic sport organizations), event organizations (e.g., FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015), professional sport teams and government departments (e.g., Sport Canada, provincial and municipal recreation departments). Our graduates can also pursue research-based or professional-based graduate degrees.

Mathematics and statistics are not only powerful problem-solving tools, but also highly creative fields of studies that combine imagination with logic, and precision with intuition. 

Mathematics is much more than numbers! Its basic goal is to reveal and model general patterns to help explain our world, whether they be found in electrical impulses in the human nervous system, the evolution of animal populations in their habitats, fluctuations in stock-market prices, or electronic communications. Mathematics reaches far beyond science and engineering into medicine, business and the social sciences. 

Advances in mathematics and statistics lie behind many discoveries that are now part of our daily lives, such as MRI scanners, digital compression of music and video, secure electronic communications, data mining, genomic algorithms, futures pricing, and many other innovations. 

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers Honours, majors and minors both in mathematics and in statistics. Our Honours program in statistics is accredited by the Statistical Society of Canada, allowing graduates to earn the A.Stat. professional designation. Moreover, the Department offers a joint honours program in mathematics and economics, a joint honours program in mathematics and computer science, as well as a multidisciplinary program in financial mathematics and economics. All our honours programs also include the co-operative education option.

The goal of the master's program is to educate enrolled nurses for an advanced practice role and/or doctoral studies. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume leadership roles in improving the quality of nursing care in various health care settings. The program provides rigorous academic preparation based on theory and research to address health-related phenomena experienced by individuals, families, groups, aggregates and communities. This Master of Science in Nursing program is only available as an on campus program with no option for students to enroll in courses at a distance.

Francophones from minority communities on the Canadian west and east coasts and in the Territories benefit from additional privileges thanks to the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS). CNFS is a nationally-represented organization that comprises ten university- and college-level academic institutions offering French-language education in various health-related fields.

Where does language come from? How does language work? What is the nature of language structure and how is meaning encoded into language? Advances in research and new technologies are revolutionizing the way we try to answer these questions. Using the latest equipment and investigative approaches, our research laboratories make it possible for you to analyze spoken sounds, track eye movement and brain activity during language processing, explore language variation and acquisition, and probe dozens of other theoretical and empirical aspects of language including unfamiliar languages. 

These programs can serve as an entry point for a master's degree in either speech-language pathology or audiology, as well as for subsequent graduate study in theoretical and empirical linguistics.

The MBA program is conceived for candidates with at least three years of work experience. The program may be completed on a full-time basis over twelve (12) consecutive months. If the degree requirements are completed on a part-time basis, program duration is then normally twenty-four (24) months.The Telfer School of Management also offers an Executive MBA (EMBA) program which is designed for mid-career and senior level executives who seek a Global, Practical and Relevant experience all while earning a graduate degree. The program provides a strong foundation in all management disciplines, develops management and people skills, and refines the students' ability to view and analyze issues, opportunities and situations from a strategic perspective, allowing them to become responsible agents of change. Emphasis is placed on the applications of relevant, contemporary management concepts, models and philosophies with an integrated approach to problem solving and an appreciation of all aspects of the organization.

The pedagogical approach stresses teamwork and managerial skills development. It allows the student to grapple with real-world challenges facing organizations through industry-based integrating projects that draw upon multiple disciplines.

The student population is drawn from around the world and brings to the program a variety of educational backgrounds as well as professional expertise from the private and public sectors.

The program combines academic excellence with a strong concern for the practical challenges facing modern managers. To this end, it makes significant use of practitioner-oriented teaching materials and business simulations, and allows students to become actively involved with organizations.

The purpose of the Biomedical Mechanical Engineering program is to graduate engineers proficient in the areas of biomedical engineering related to mechanical engineering. These include the design of medical devices such as artificial hearts, implants and prostheses, the development and selection of bio-compatible metallic and non-metallic materials for implants and medical equipment, robotics for medical applications, biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering.

The program structure parallels that of the regular Mechanical Engineering program, replacing eight courses in the regular program with biomedically-oriented courses.

This program has a broad scope, so that graduates may have a wide range of career choices, not only in the biomedical field but also in conventional mechanical engineering. Biomedical systems are among the most complex of mechanical systems; therefore, a strong and comprehensive education in standard mechanical engineering principles is provided, with emphasis on their application in biomedical systems.

The University of Ottawa offers a rich academic environment to study mathematics and statistics under the supervision of professors who have gained an international reputation for their research. Most major fields of research in mathematics and statistics are represented within the Department of mathematics and Statistics. Moreover, the Department is a participating unit in the master's level collaborative programs in bioinformatics and in biostatistics.

The School of Music at the University of Ottawa is the only school of its kind in Canada to offer a music and cognition program that focuses on special music education. Its partnership with the Lotus Centre for Special Music Education, which provides adapted music education for the special needs community, makes for a complete learning experience combining theory and practice. Philosophy
Since it deals mainly with issues that have no simple solutions, philosophy emphasizes the exchange of ideas and debate, and thus cultivates an appetite for deep and serious reflection. By reading and discussing the works of the world's great thinkers on fundamental topics like truth, justice, morality and existence, you sharpen your own ability to think clearly, critically and independently. The Department's curriculum has a twin approach, historical and analytical, and covers political and social philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and logic. 

Political Science
Politics is omnipresent in our lives. Political science seeks to describe, analyze, understand and assess the principles and power relations that govern social life. It revolves as much around the structures and institutions that define these relations and principles as around the ideas and practices that drive them. It studies everything that influences political life and institutions (ideologies, groups, social movements, etc.) on a local, regional, national and international scale.

Our programs offer in-depth training in political science and encourage critical reflection on pivotal issues like citizenship, identity, political participation, globalization and development, governance and the state, and ethics and democracy. A discipline open to many theoretical and methodological approaches, political science constantly exchanges and shares with other fields. At the University of Ottawa's School of Political Studies, you build your knowledge in four subfields of political science: political thought, Canadian and Quebec politics, comparative politics, and international relations and global politics.

The Department of Communication at the Faculty of Arts offers an MA program in Communication with thesis or with research paper, a Master of Communication (MC) by coursework to which a co-op option can be added, and a PhD in Communication.

The Department of Communication, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa’s Co-op office, offers a co-op option to a limited number of students in the MC program. Students must request this option in their admission file. The co-op option provides the opportunity to acquire practical work experience by completing two one-term paid work placements.

The Master of Communication focuses on two fields of research: media studies and organizational communication. The media studies field examines the content and the modes of operation of traditional and emerging media in their social, cultural, economic, political and regulatory contexts.

Organizational communication focuses on interpersonal and group interactions in the workplace; planning for internal and external communication in private, public, and nonprofit organizations; risk/crisis communication, public relations, ICT’s uses within organizations, etc.

The program aims to develop in graduates the following skills:

• Evaluate critically the theories, concepts and assumptions underlying media studies or organizational communication with particular attention to their chosen research interest.
• Demonstrate an ability to identify and work with the varying epistemological traditions developed by French-speaking and English-speaking scholars in communication studies.
• Contribute to the development of skills, theories, approaches, and materials for both academics and professionals.
• Analyze data and communicate research results to diverse audiences, including scholars, policymakers, and professionals in communication studies.
