This programme will help provide you with transferable skills useful in the criminal justice sector and allied career fields. You can develop your practical experience through a wide range of volunteering opportunities in local criminal justice agencies, including HM Prison and Probation Service, youth offending services and victim support.

This is an applied course and you will learn first-hand from a team of experienced academics who have strong links with the British Society of Criminology and the British Sociological Association.

You will study a range of topics, including Crime and Punishment in Contemporary Society, Crime, Risk and Community Safety, and Young People and the Criminal Justice System. As the course progresses, you will have the flexibility to tailor your learning through optional modules to your desired pathway.

Upon graduation there are a variety of career paths available, including policing, private security, crime prevention, victim support, prison and probation service, youth justice and drug and alcohol services.

This title change follows a review of the programme and has been made to better reflect the content of the programme and terminology used within the industry, as well as to ensure that our students are well placed to secure graduate employment. 

The artificial intelligence industry is fast-growing and touches so many aspects of society, from business operations to our everyday lives. In this course, you will gain a detailed understanding of artificial intelligence concepts and techniques, and learn to use this knowledge to address contemporary problems and challenges such as the use of microprocessor-based systems to control home appliances and the detection and resolution of collisions in applied mechanics.

Get involved with our dedicated Robot Club, where you will solidify your skills by instructing secondary school children on robotic construction or take the opportunity to develop your own robot project, with the potential to compete in the annual international Robot Challenge in Vienna.

In the first year, everyone will undertake a standard first-year syllabus, studying core modules in Constitutional and Administrative law, Contract Law, Criminal Law, and English and European Legal Contexts. A range of delivery and assessment styles will fully prepare students for subsequent years of study.

The focus on foundational legal knowledge and skills will continue in the second and third year with modules on Land Law, Law of Tort, and Equity and Trusts. You will also develop functional awareness through Inter-professional Legal Skills.

You will have the opportunity after your first year to focus your studies by selecting a preferred specialism pathway in one of the following areas: Business Law, Criminal Justice, Human Rights & Social Justice, Sociolegal Studies and International Law. Alternatively, you can continue on the Law LLB pathway.

The emphasis is on doing rather than simply reading and listening; participation is a central feature of this course. The teaching of the law modules is augmented by a range of employability and placement activities. The aim is to produce confident, independent learners.

Our Intelligent Systems MSc provides you with knowledge of the various models of computational intelligence, an insight into their theoretical basis, and the skills to apply the associated techniques to a wide variety of industry problems.

Computational Intelligence (CI) encompasses the techniques and methods used to tackle problems that traditional approaches to computing struggle to solve. The four areas of fuzzy logic, neural networks, CI optimisation and knowledge-based systems encompass much of what is considered to be computational (or artificial) intelligence. There are also opportunities to apply what you learn in areas such as robot control and games development, depending on your interests.

You can choose from a number of specialist modules including natural language processing, artificial neural networks and data mining techniques, while developing your skills in our dedicated robotics laboratory, equipped with a variety of mobile robots. The applied computational intelligence module considers knowledge-based systems, as well as the historical, philosophical and future implications of AI, and focuses on current research and applications in the area.

Media Production is an industry-focused course, which provides you with the technical foundations and practical skills required for a career in a rapidly changing media landscape, enabling you to pursue roles in industries such as advertising, TV and radio production, journalism and PR.

Teaching modules include image capture and processing, audio recording and production, television documentary production, radio location production, creative media entrepreneurship and social media innovation.

The course provides extensive hands-on practice, together with an understanding of the technical principles that guide its graduates over the course of their careers in a rapidly changing technical environment.
