Our Financial Mathematics programme develops the skills and knowledge required by the modern investment and asset management industry, where structured finance and relative value trading strateges dominate. The emphasis is on developing a range of practical skills relevant to the increasingly mathematical and ever-changing world of contemporary finance.

Financial Mathematics isn't just for aspiring bankers. The UK Government is the single biggest user of structured finance, through the Private Finance Initiative. Graduates are also attractive to the treasury function of international corporations and to the trading arm of commodities companies.

Students on the Financial Mathematics degree follow the same programme as Actuarial Science students for the first two years. The programmes diverge in third year and in the fourth year Financial Mathematics students will be able to study courses alongside Master's students on the Quantitative Finance and Mathematics programme. The aim is for Financial Mathematics graduates to achieve a skill set comparable to those graduating with a Master's degree.

BEng (Hons) Engineering Design and Manufacture (Electronic or Mechanical) Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) is aimed to develop experts in the following areas: Enginering Design; Manufacturing Engineering; Engineering Consultancy; Engineering Operations Management; Engineering Project Management.

We are offering graduate apprenticeships in two sub-disciplines of Engineering Design and Manufacture:

• Mechanical Engineering;
• Electronic Engineering

Key areas of the programme:

• The primary focus of the Engineering Design and Manufacture Graduate Apprenticeship Programme is on developing the knowledge, understanding and skills outcomes sought by employers.

In this course British Sign Language (BSL) is studied to professional level. Students are trained to work as BSL/English Interpreters and Translators and to use BSL proficiently in related professional areas.

The course focuses on practical and applied language skills, interpreting and translating skills, communication studies, linguistics, translation and interpreting studies and Deaf studies. Uniquely in this course during year 3, students are placed full-time with signing organisations in the UK or at one of our International partner universities. (Please note that BSL placements are self-financed and students may be required to undertake placements anywhere in the UK.)

In year four students have the additional opportunity to work closely with professional interpreters in real-life situations on placement, gaining vital work-place experience.

Graduates successfully completing all specified components of the course are able to register as full Members of the Register of Sign Language Interpreters with NRCPD, the national registration body in the UK for sign language interpreting, and with SASLI, the Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters. (NB to be eligible for full registration with SASLI, students must achieve a minimum of grade D for all Level 4 courses.)

Entry to the course is open to applicants with or without previous BSL experience.

This degree introduces vital business knowledge to those with limited academic experience in the subject and provides an opportunity to develop versatile management skills in just one year of study. Coupled with specialist learning in the area of tourism, it develops modern management skills to complement existing knowledge and prepare graduates for a career shift or management role.

The Edinburgh Business School aims to provide forward-thinking, practical, focused MSc degrees that are outward looking and focused on the global business world. As part of our programme, you will study specialist subjects from across the business sphere including; international business context, competitive strategy, research philosophy and practice, and business economics.

The MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a 5-year programme, which shares a common structure with the BEng degree for the first 3 years. Students study a broad-based range of topics from low current electronics to high power systems. At the end of year 3, candidates are selected to progress to the MEng course for a further 2 years of study.

During the 4th and 5th years, technical studies are advanced to a Masters level and the syllabus is greatly extended in the area of engineering management. A six-month industrial placement takes place over summer, after 4th year, and runs until the end of the first semester of the final year.

The Geography, Society and Environment degree is designed for students who are interested in human geography and related topics in urban design, social policy, cities and modern studies. Overall, this degree explores the ways in which people shape and are shaped by the places and environments in which they live. How do cities change and how do the people involved shape those cities and neighbourhoods? How does the built environment shape our behaviour? What makes some places healthier or happier or more resilient?

You will develop field work skills in surveying, mapping and site assessment with field work and site visits as a key strand in your learning. You will develop important research skills through core modules in statistics, data analysis and research methods which you will apply to your final year research dissertation. Cross-disciplinary and problem-based working helps students acquire the skills needed to work in multi-disciplinary teams and solve real-world problems.

Highlights:

• You can participate in residential field trips in years 1, 2 and 3, visiting locations in Scotland, the UK and beyond; plus shorter one day trips and site visits. These trips provide important opportunities to deepen practical skills in field survey, site observation, data collection and analysis.
• You can experience links to practice and industry – hearing from visiting speakers and professionals working as chartered geographers, surveyors and planners.
• In year 3, all students are given the opportunity for mentoring by a practitioner, someone working in industry who can discuss career choices, graduate job opportunities and professional membership routes.
