This course has been developed with local and national employers in the creative industries. You’ll benefit from the hands-on experience of staff who actively pursue research in this area, many of whom divide their time between academic work and commercial sector activities. You’ll have access to professional, industry-standard facilities. Our hardware and software systems are updated each year ensuring you use the same software as you will find in industry.

Throughout the course, you’ll practise presenting your work in front of a panel of tutors and industry professionals. Your final year project will be displayed at a tradeshow event where you can make contact with future employers. Previous students have found work with Disney Interactive Studios, Sky TV and many digital agencies.

Engage with human rights practice by linking the legal, theoretical and technical skills and knowledge needed to work for international organisations fighting injustice, oppression and persecution.You will study contemporary debates in human rights promotion and protection, researching the stories of violations, asylum, surveillance, peacekeeping and torture that are behind many of today's news headlines.

This vocational course will enable you to develop your own creative screenwriting practice and an extensive portfolio of work in preparation for a career as a screenwriter.

You will be based in the Northern Film School and will work alongside production courses and be taught via lectures, seminars, tutorials, talks, discussions and screenings. You will be supported as you work on self-directed projects and writing exercises. You will be encouraged to explore your own creative potential and test your ideas across a range of platforms including film and television, and you will develop an understanding and appreciation of the impact of new technologies on the industry.

You will be introduced to a wide range of ideas from industry which will inform and inspire your development as a writer as you gain a thorough grounding in key concepts and concerns of screenwriting for a range of screen media. This course will emphasise the creation of new ideas through provocation, stimulation and inspiration. You will be paired with a mentor for your final project which will replicate professional practice by encouraging you to develop a script in response to a client's needs.

  • Develop concepts and narratives through drawing, sequential illustration and animation, digital practices, three-dimensional forms, performance and creative writing
  • Underpin these practices with an emphasis on drawing and image-making

  • Investigate established unfamiliar and emerging processes, to inform your own individual methodologies

You’ll learn from experienced lecturers who practice and research in diverse industry fields with the knowledge and skills to support multidisciplinary explorations.

You’ll develop your ability to communicate and contribute to a team project by working with students studying different disciplines. This will simulate the working environment and enable you to practise collaborating on projects and briefs, a skill you’ll need in the workplace whether you choose to join an agency, studio or work as freelance.

If you have little or no experience of psychology, this course will give you the essential knowledge, skills and experience needed for a first step towards a career in this exciting field.

You will gain a comprehensive and critical understanding of cognitive, social, developmental and biological psychology, individual differences and conceptual and historical issues in psychology. In preparation for completing your dissertation, you will also develop the research skills necessary for designing and conducting quality research beyond that expected of graduates.

This course is relevant to graduates who have not studied psychology before, who have completed an undergraduate degree with a psychology component or who have undertaken an undergraduate psychology course not accredited by the BPS.

Creative Arts & Design

Master of Arts in Fashion

You will choose one of three strands to specialise in fashion design, visual communication for fashion or fashion writing.

The fashion writing strand will be taught through an engaging mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. If you study either the fashion design, or visual communication for fashion strands, the majority of your course will be delivered in a hands-on studio environment. Regardless of your specialism, you will be taught in our industry-standard facilities.

In addition to your chosen specialist strand, your will complete a core module in Research Methods, which will equip you with the knowledge you will need to complete in-depth research and produce a proposal for your independent projects. You will also complete a dissertation, which will be related to your Independent Project modules.

Depending on your chosen specialism, you will delve deeper into an area of personal interest. The fashion-writing strand offers you the opportunity to develop skills related to the creation of editorial content – be it print magazines, online writing, or promotional work. There is scope on the course to enhance your written skills to a professional standard, specifically in relation to fashion journalism, but you’ll also be encouraged to think creatively and innovatively with regards the publishing industry as a whole.

If you are a visual communication for fashion student, your work may explore concepts for traditional and digital visual marketing, or simply develop a relevant technique or process, such as fashion photography, styling, illustration, or film. If you choose the fashion design route, you could concentrate on developing traditional and/or experimental pattern cutting and construction processes. You will be encouraged to explore craft and innovation to inform materials and fabrication within your work.

You’ll study a balance of history and media modules in your first year, helping you develop a strong skillset and knowledge of methodologies in each discipline. Things like source analysis and media interpretation.
