The role of acoustics in the built environment and the impact of sound and noise on society is a growing area of research and practice.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Understand acoustic design and practice as a vital component in environments where creative industries function
• Recognise the intrinsic relationship between audio systems and the environments in which they operate
• Develop a broad understanding of the behaviour of sound in all scenarios
• Build technical and practical skills in the measurement, evaluation and design of audio systems and acoustic environments
• Explore the areas of interfacing, interactivity and spatial audio
• Practise listening to audio systems and acoustic environments and develop your ability to complete their set up and evaluation independently

As part of your course you’ll:

• Understand the physical nature and behaviour of sound and use this to benefit audio production and performance
• Analyse how audio systems work
• Study a blend of engineering, acoustics, programming and electronics
• Apply your skills and knowledge to acoustic issues and technical requirements you’ll face in industry
• Learn to record live sound, digital broadcasts, studio and location sound and audio-visual applications
• Work across a variety of environments including live music events, studio sound and sound reproduction systems

You’ll practise using your knowledge to find solutions to audio engineering problems. For example, you’ll learn how to predict and reduce the acoustic impact of rail lines on nearby homes, and how to design a public address system to deliver a speech to thousands of listeners.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Learn to understand the complex social conditions that drive people to commit crime and how that expert knowledge can enhance your study of criminology
• Critically analyse and challenge responses to crime in order to help shape a better society
• Study a variety of topics such as modern theories of sociology and criminology, exploring issues such as youth crime, social exclusion and how the media shapes our perceptions of crime
• Choose your own area of investigation when researching and writing your dissertation

You’ll engage with sociology and criminology equally. Through a blend of workshops, collaborative projects and observational field trips, you’ll be encouraged to drive your studies in the direction of your choosing.

Sociological projects can include creating wikis or presenting your work at a student conference. You could even see your critical essay published in our school's highly regarded sociology journal.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Explore social psychological approaches that extend Western scientific thought
• Reconsider ideas of consciousness, mind, self and social living from a range of alternative cultural frameworks including psychoanalysis, discursive psychology and non-Western belief systems such as Buddhism and Daoism
• Gain insights into how the environment, spirituality, language and relationships shape who we are and what we become
• Develop a critical philosophy of what it means to be human

You can get involved in plenty of volunteering opportunities in several areas including mental health and disability support. We also have strong ties with local charitable and community organisations, helping you to understand issues such as domestic abuse as well as child and adolescent psychotherapy.

You’ll gain unique perspectives by looking into the important works of Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx and discuss theories gleaned from film and literature works. You’ll challenge contemporary thought on psychology, spiritualism, religion and culture, bridging the gap between the self and society.

Using established management tools and techniques, you will then be able to apply your knowledge of supply chain management and logistics to complex regional, national and international issues in a variety of settings.

We offer great links with industry, thanks to our teaching team which includes Chartered Engineers who have extensive experience across different areas of engineering. Guest lectures and talks on engineering projects will provide you with great opportunities to network with professional engineers and understand how what you're learning can be applied to real situations.

• Understand the policy-making process and how it impacts everyday lives
• Look at why social problems persist, and explore what more can be done to address them
• Have the opportunity to explore the welfare state, the impact of globalisation, social inequalities, the complexities of making successful policies, and social and economic justice
• Have a choice of optional modules and a dissertation in your second and third years, which you can tailor to your interests

We are also members of industry network, Game Republic, where past students have won awards from industry judges in the Student Showcase Competition.

Final year students also have the opportunity to showcase their work in front of leading employers at the end of year degree show. You can see some of their work in the Leeds School of Arts Festival. Previous years have seen many of our students gain job offers through the showcase opportunities.
