Explore contemporary dance and take part in exciting collaborative performance projects.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Work with choreographers, independent dance artists and directors
• Learn how to perform, direct, organise and teach, developing your skills in all areas of contemporary dance production
• Be taught by practising artists who will advise you on producing and performing work
• Be based in Leeds, a hub of cultural activity and home to Northern Ballet, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Yorkshire Dance National Dance Agency, Leeds Playhouse, The Riley Theatre and The Carriageworks

You’ll learn from a teaching team interested in working with students from a variety of dance backgrounds and they will encourage you to develop your creativity.

This course has exceptional industry links with local and international organisations and you will benefit from being taught in specialist studios and theatre spaces. You will be able to take advantage of opportunities at local, national and international level, using our links to give you access to recognised artists working in contemporary practices. Regular networking and work experience throughout the course will give you the confidence to take on exciting projects and approach people inside and outside the industry.

In your third year you’ll be able to choose a placement that appeals to you. You could help run a festival, shadow a choreographer, take part in a teaching residency, or do something else that is of interest to you.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Explore a wide range of theories within psychology, mental health, counselling, child development and psychotherapy
• Combine theoretical knowledge with opportunities to work in mental health environments and develop your ability to build effective therapeutic relationships
• Study a variety of therapeutic approaches  
• Explore psychotherapeutic models including cognitive and behavioural development and look at theories on how mental health issues develop across the lifespan
• Learn how to develop your interpersonal skills in order to build counselling relationships between you and your clients 

This course is suitable for those working in mental health services wanting to further their knowledge and career, or for those wishing to enter the health and care professions. You’ll study a variety of therapeutic approaches and will be able to tailor the course to your career ambitions. On completion, you’ll be able to build positive therapeutic relationships that can foster positive change for your clients, for example with people experiencing anxiety, depression and addiction.

You’ll practise your counselling and interpersonal skills using our interview and feedback rooms. Engaging with work-based learning opportunities will allow you to reflect upon how you use your practical skills in the real world. These activities will help you become a confident, globally minded and emotionally mature individual, enhancing your career prospects.

Accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), this course conforms to the IOSH professional syllabus. On successful completion, you can apply for Graduate Membership of IOSH, and after fulfilling the Initial Professional Development you can apply for Chartered Membership.

You will choose one of three strands to specialise in fashion design, visual communication for fashion or fashion writing.

The fashion writing strand will be taught through an engaging mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. If you study either the fashion design, or visual communication for fashion strands, the majority of your course will be delivered in a hands-on studio environment. Regardless of your specialism, you will be taught in our industry-standard facilities.

In addition to your chosen specialist strand, your will complete a core module in Research Methods, which will equip you with the knowledge you will need to complete in-depth research and produce a proposal for your independent projects. You will also complete a dissertation, which will be related to your Independent Project modules.

Depending on your chosen specialism, you will delve deeper into an area of personal interest. The fashion-writing strand offers you the opportunity to develop skills related to the creation of editorial content – be it print magazines, online writing, or promotional work. There is scope on the course to enhance your written skills to a professional standard, specifically in relation to fashion journalism, but you’ll also be encouraged to think creatively and innovatively with regards the publishing industry as a whole.

If you are a visual communication for fashion student, your work may explore concepts for traditional and digital visual marketing, or simply develop a relevant technique or process, such as fashion photography, styling, illustration, or film. If you choose the fashion design route, you could concentrate on developing traditional and/or experimental pattern cutting and construction processes. You will be encouraged to explore craft and innovation to inform materials and fabrication within your work.
