Accredited IEng (Full)
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, if you choose to take one. A placement or sandwich year will provide you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace, which will help you apply for jobs when you graduate.

You will specialise in either contemporary literature or creative writing. Taught in workshops held on weekday evenings, you will be able to fit your studies around your existing commitments.

Contemporary Literature
Specialise in researching contemporary literature. You will be introduced to a range of recent literary texts in English and develop an advanced, critical understanding of recent debates on the contemporary creative process.

You will be encouraged by expert tutors to develop your skills in close reading, creating and delivering presentations and formal discussions. Modules will explore how contemporary literary studies is a creative process, and will enable you to specialise in topics at the cutting edge of the discipline.   

Your independent project will enable you to experience the process of defining your own area of investigation and conducting in-depth research and writing.

Creative Writing
Study creative writing at an advanced level. From the outset, you will focus on developing particular expertise in the writing process, and the texts and theories you study will enhance your writing practice.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Develop your expertise in the strategic management of integrated marketing communications and advertising
• Study broader marketing areas such as market research and digital communications
• Understand how to use your communications expertise to build relationships with specific target audiences
• Learn how to support the achievement of business objectives and development through marketing and advertising management
• Have the opportunity to be mentored by marketing practitioners

As part of your course you’ll:

• Study sports journalism within the wider context of journalism as a practice
• Learn how to produce real journalism content within ethical, legal and institutional constraints and influences
• Practise assessing and analysing the developing market
• Gain a historical and theoretical understanding of journalism, and sports journalism’s rich past and challenging future
• Be encouraged to create content for traditional and emerging platforms
• Develop your transferable content production skills
• Start to build your professional contacts and confidence

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Develop knowledge of the origins, evolution and contemporary dynamics of policy making and challenges to it
• Gain in-depth understanding of public policy informed by current scholarship and research, including a critical awareness of current issues, theories and developments
• Study the concepts, theories and methods used in the study and practice of public policy
• Consider issues from a range of disciplinary perspectives
• Understand the implications of complexity, risk and uncertainty in policy-making
• Use a range of techniques and research methods and digital literacy skills to access, process and evaluate information
• Apply your knowledge with originality and creativity
• Explore how new knowledge is created and synthesised by producing a dissertation

Develop key skills in economics, accounting and management with a strong vocational focus.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore the principles of economics and how they apply to business
• Gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of the economic decisions faced by business managers
• Develop the ability to analyse the economic and social environments in which those decisions are taken

If you take a paid work placement in your third year you’ll develop and enhance your employability skills. Past students have completed placements with companies including Mercedes Benz, Price Waterhouse Cooper and high street retail banks.

Develop the power of your storytelling through confident employment of creative and technical filmmaking skills in drama, documentary and experimental film production.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Study theory to develop your creative practice and be guided by industry experienced tutors in all aspects of film production
• Explore a range of filmmaking disciplines, including directing for drama, experimental film and documentary, together with producing, cinematography, screenwriting, design, editing and post-production, and location and post-production sound
• Learn who your audience is and how to engage them
• Explore the responsibilities of your practice, discovering your voice and developing that as a filmmaker

All of our tutors are film practitioners, so you’ll benefit from a wide range of professional production experience. The teaching team has a wealth of expertise in drama, documentary and experimental filmmaking, with specialist knowledge in screenwriting, postproduction, sound, producing, directing and cinematography.

This integrated masters course provides the ideal platform to gain broad-based technical experience that will enable you to enter design, construction or operations roles within the civil engineering industry.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Build the foundations for a diverse and interesting future in civil engineering
• Develop knowledge of the mathematical and scientific principles and methodologies which underpin civil engineering
• Apply your knowledge to real-world problems
• Learn to produce innovative solutions using technical literature and industry codes of standard
• Practice using investigation and evaluation of design-related engineering issues
• Gain detailed knowledge and technical proficiency in health and safety, sustainable, environmental and economic development, and the frameworks in which they operate
• Equip yourself with the problem-solving skills to work on projects such as designing large structures and infrastructure including roads, water supply and drainage, bridges, airports, tunnels, and sea and flood defences

 You’ll learn using a variety of tools, including case studies and design-based exercises that will enable you to develop applied skills, participate in critical analysis and practise your presentation skills.

Specialise in international finance or global marketing while you study the global business world.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Develop valuable knowledge of the regulations and processes governing international trade
• Learn to apply your knowledge in an international setting
• Collect, analyse, and evaluate information and data on international markets and firms
• Learn to understand and critically appraise contemporary issues and policy debates as they apply to international business

The globalisation of trade, transatlantic trade agreements and the UK's Brexit decision are factors which continue to reshape the economic landscape.
