Train to be a qualified social worker and gain a thorough grasp of the knowledge, skills and values that sit at the core of this rewarding career. Recognising the powerful links between personal and political issues, the course will assert the need to challenge inequality and safeguard vulnerable people.

In your first year, you will study the legal frameworks, policies and theories - in particular psychosocial perspectives - that underpin social work. A practice placement will offer you the chance to hone your communication skills as you start to apply your knowledge in the field.

In your second year, you will continue to extend and refine your understanding of the law. You'll also undertake a second practice placement and complete a dissertation. This course remains approved by Social Work England. This means that people qualifying from this course can apply to become a registered social worker.

Your studies will start with a clear focus on local contexts. As you progress, you’ll learn the skills to address national and global issues and discover how complex contemporary society is and the impact it has on us all.

As part of your course, you'll:

• Undertake role-play with trained actors as part of your training. They’ll take on the role of vulnerable people and you'll be able to learn from their video diaries and blogs.

The social care sector is growing. It gives you employment opportunities working with children, young people and families.

You’ll be given the chance to undertake an international volunteering placement in your second and third years. Previous students have volunteered in India, South Africa, Finland and the US, working with people from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds.

You'll share modules with students from related courses. This helps you to learn about the different areas of social science. It also teaches you how specific environments and situations are handled.

Become an effective communications practitioner with the expertise and confidence to work in an international setting. You will learn how to work with clients to produce practical communications solutions in the private, public and voluntary sectors all over the world.

The course is delivered by four European universities: Leeds Beckett University, Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, IULM in Italy and Vilnius University in Lithuania, which all specialise in professional communications and public relations.

You will choose whether to study your first or second semester at Leeds Beckett University, where you will benefit from being taught at one of the most established centres for education and research in the field of public relations in Europe. You will spend your remaining semesters at a partner university, specialising in areas of expertise specific to that university. You could also take an optional industry placement in your final semester.

From global events such as credit crunches to the closure of our favourite high street stores, explore the impact finance and the economy have on the world around you.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Discover how financial decisions made by individuals and businesses affect consumers, workers, industry, commerce and government

If you take a paid work placement in your third year, you’ll develop and enhance your employability skills. Our students have enjoyed placements with Disney, Morrisons and the NHS.

Engage with all forms of mass communication – the internet, social media, television, radio, popular music and cinema – on this dynamic course that critically explores cultural trends and media industries.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Get hands-on to create photographic essays, blogs and podcasts
• Design a talk programme for a radio station
• Invent and pitch a lifestyle TV concept
• Design and create an online game and form an anti-racism campaign group
• Work with professionals from social media, marketing, TV and magazine production
• Graduate with a recognised degree and employable skills across all current and potential future media platforms

The Northern heart of culture and the arts
You’ll be offered unique opportunities to gain work experience with the media, cultural and creative industries in Leeds, such as museums, art galleries, theatres, film production companies and recording studios that surround the city centre campus. You may also get involved in many regional events; for example, the Harrogate Film Festival, the Ilkley Literature Festival or the Leeds West Indian Carnival.

Take advantage of the special relationships we’ve developed with employers and cultural industries throughout the city and across the region. Students have completed placements in the editorial team at Hallmark Studios and with Peepal Tree Press – an internationally-renowned publisher based in the city.

This integrated masters course provides the ideal platform to gain broad-based technical experience that will enable you to enter design, construction or operations roles within the civil engineering industry.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Build the foundations for a diverse and interesting future in civil engineering
• Develop knowledge of the mathematical and scientific principles and methodologies which underpin civil engineering
• Apply your knowledge to real-world problems
• Learn to produce innovative solutions using technical literature and industry codes of standard
• Practice using investigation and evaluation of design-related engineering issues

Engage with human rights practice by linking the legal, theoretical and technical skills and knowledge needed to work for international organisations fighting injustice, oppression and persecution.You will study contemporary debates in human rights promotion and protection, researching the stories of violations, asylum, surveillance, peacekeeping and torture that are behind many of today's news headlines.

Working with your tutors and alongside industry professionals, you will develop the skills to be able to investigate claims of human rights abuses, gather evidence and build cases for legal proceedings.Your course will also hone your research and project management skills and develop your ability to write compelling funding applications and formulate budgets - essential requirements for a career in this area.

Created in collaboration with tutors from the University's Leeds Law School, your course will provide you with the expertise and practical skills to help protect human rights and tackle abuses.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Develop the scientific foundation required to undertake a PhD qualification in biomedical sciences and related areas
• Work solely on an extended research project from January to September
• Be supported by staff from our Centre for Biomedical Science Research as you develop your practical expertise to an advanced level
• Have a wide variety of research options to choose from within molecular biology, microbiology, pharmacology and biochemistry
• Gain transferable skills, including science communication and promoting yourself as a scientist, guided by staff who have featured in print, TV and on radio as biomedical science experts
