BSc Economics

You’ll develop your advanced theoretical knowledge as well as a practical understanding of all aspects of accounting and finance. Covering key areas within financial and management accounting, taxation and business law, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the role accounting plays in successful organisations.

The crisis in biodiversity is a crucial challenge for current and future generations. Every day, species diversity is rapidly declining. Despite the effort of evolutionary biologists to describe biodiversity patterns and processes, they are often missing from the dialogue about conservation of the biodiversity. This course is designed for those looking for an interdisciplinary programme at the interface of social and ecological systems.

This course combines expert teaching with unique experiences of work in real environmental and conservation settings to develop your ability to evaluate the biological and social processes that underpin interactions between biodiversity loss and human society. You will learn to gather and analyse quantitative and qualitative genomic ecological and social data; skills which are at the forefront of current research in conservation science and evolutionary biology.

You will gain invaluable practical experience through our field trips, in Mauritius for example, to work on a real research project, with an additional week in Jersey to learn about captive animal management and the role of zoos in conservation.

Course Highlights

• Field trip in a tropical environment (e.g. Mauritius) to undertake tropical biodiversity and a one week field trip to Jersey focusing on captive animal management and role of zoos in conservation

You’ll receive training in industry-standard software for managing the supply chain processes. Enterprise Resource Planning software (SAP) enables organisations to make decisions and run their business. Supply chains depend on this application and how it integrates business is of paramount importance. Knowledge of SAP is a tangible skill and is widely sought after by employers.

You also have the option of extending your studies to 4 years and gaining an MComp qualification.

You’ll gain an understanding of the key principles of computer science while you develop your programming, system engineering, and project experience skills. You’ll also get the support, encouragement and confidence to put your skills into practice through individual and group projects. Your first year will be entirely project led, ensuring you practice your skills from the very start.

In the past our students have worked on a project with the prestigious Pink Shoe Club , creating prototypes for a unique digital self-assessment tool.

You’ll build up a range of skills by examining theoretical and scientific approaches to criminology, human behaviour, and psychology. You’ll also gain understanding of the psychological issues associated with criminal behaviour and the treatment of people who have committed criminal offences.

During your degree, you’ll take part in work placements with forensic psychologists, police forces, prisons and hospitals so you can build up a portfolio of professional experience. You can expect to engage in activities like running anger management courses for prisoners, while you also perform clinical research in areas such as eating disorders and autism, among others.

Studying BSc Mathematics with us will open a lot of career doors, whether you want to pursue the subject professionally or join an industry that’s looking for your skills. You can also add a fourth year to your studies and pursue an MMath qualification.

You’ll study a combination of traditional maths alongside modern topics like communicating maths. Lectures will introduce theory while workshop and lab study will develop your ability to apply it in practical settings.

You’ll be taught in highly interactive groups that’ll allow you to explore problems and find solutions in a supportive environment. A series called 'Engaging with Mathematics' brings in professionals to talk to students about possible careers, opportunities available, and all the wonderful ways maths can be applied outside the classroom.

Apply your theoretical knowledge

• Learning to apply your maths skills in the real world throughout your studies will prepare you for the world of work. One way you’ll do this is by joining staff in different outreach events that bring maths to the general public. In recent years these have included the award-winning SMASHFest and the Skills Show in Birmingham NEC.
• Our Problem Solving Methods and Communicating Mathematics modules engage with real-world problems that graduate mathematicians are likely to face. You’ll also get the option to take a year-long placement between the second and third years to further enhance your skills and explore professional interests.
• Previous graduates have gone on to study MSc Mathematics at Russell Group universities and pursue other specialist masters. Graduates from this course went on to work in law, accounting, finance, and as mathematicians. During the foundation year you will learn how computers are used by a broad range of people and organisations as well as acquiring fundamental software development skills and knowledge of hardware. You also gain relevant mathematical and statistical skills and develop useful communication skills.

BEng Design Engineering

The BEng Design Engineering programme offers core design capabilities, engineering design methods, project management techniques, prototypes for different stages of the engineering design process, evaluation and optimisation of design solutions and manufacturing processes.

The latest engineering systems opens opportunities along with challenges. This programme, with design engineering focus, comes up with practice-based learning approaches, problem solving and working methods for the design and implementation of such systems in practical projects.

You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in these subject areas. The number of students who progress to degree study are very high - in fact some of these students have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.

BA Criminology (Criminal Justice)

Our criminal justice degree approaches the subject from a theoretical, research-informed, and practice-based perspective. This means that during your time studying you’ll gain an understanding of the criminal justice system, including an introduction to law and legal justice and the different career paths you might want to pursue after graduation.
