The central aim of the Philosophy major is to bring clarity and rigour to students’ thinking and to advance their understanding of, and ability to engage with, central questions, arguments, theories, and texts concerning the world and our place within it.

The Philosophy with Creative Writing BA (Hons) will teach you to write and analyse texts and arguments with clarity, rigour, and originality. The Philosophy major will give you the ability to engage with central questions, arguments, theories and texts concerning the world and our place within it. You’ll learn about the logic behind language and meaning, alongside studying topics such as ethics, metaphysics and aesthetics. The Creative Writing minor will enable you to express your philosophical judgements in a variety of forms, from short fiction to poetry to scriptwriting, as has been established practice in the history of philosophy. 

Develop wide-ranging analytical skills and apply them to government policies, literary and nonfiction texts. Compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing where they derive legitimacy and how they interact with other institutions. Your Politics & International Relations with English BSc (Hons) will allow you to develop wide-ranging skills of analysis, which you will apply to government policies and literary and nonfiction texts. You’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other institutions. You’ll take a course in political theory, questioning not only how these organisations work, but also how thinkers have theorised they ought to work. Through your English minor, you’ll expand your critical reading skills, giving you the relevant conceptual tools, expertise and knowledge to enhance your enjoyment of literature for the rest of your life.

Your English with Creative Writing BA (Hons) will enable you to develop your skills in analysing and creating literature. You’ll take courses in literature from 1550 to the present, learning how writers have responded to their contexts, cultures, and the literature of their contemporaries. You’ll gain the tools and confidence to develop your creative responses to your cultural situation, and will find yourself approaching a diverse range of literary forms from both a critical and creative perspective.

Learn how people have lived, and how states have attempted to shape and influence those lives throughout history from the Roman Empire through to modern day America. Examine the practice and applications of history, and compare political institutions of different countries, analysing their legitimacy to dictate over their subjects. 

Your study of the History with Politics & International Relations BA (Hons) will provide a full understanding of how people have lived, and how states have attempted to shape and influence those lives throughout history. You will study periods from the Roman Empire through to modern day America, drawing on complex and often contradictory sources. You will also take courses examining the practice and applications of the historical discipline itself. In the Politics & IR minor, you’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing their legitimacy to dictate over their subjects and how they interact with other organisations. 

Study political theory and political science, while examining governance, institution-building, decision-making and socio-cultural linkages among state and non-state sectors, while learning to communicate your knowledge creatively and accurately to a wide range of audiences, in a diverse variety of forms.

The Politics & International Relations with Creative Writing BSc (Hons) will not only equip you with knowledge of political institutions and their interactions but also with the ability to communicate that knowledge creatively and accurately to a wide range of audiences, in a diverse variety of forms. You’ll take a course in political theory, questioning not only how these organizations work, but also how thinkers have theorised they ought to work. In your Creative Writing minor, you will hone your craft by writing poetry, scripts, creative non-fiction, and immersive journalism, amongst other forms. 

Our Economics with Politics & International Relations BSc (Hons) is designed to teach you how to think critically about how the world operates, with a particular focus on governments and political institutions within them. An advanced understanding of economics will give you key insights into political decision-making and policy. Through your major, you will develop quantitative skills to understand and evaluate economic events and decisions in the real world. This will be complemented by your study of political theory, the organisation of government, and international relations for your minor.

With the Philosophy, Politics & History BA (Hons) at NCH, you can choose one of Politics, Philosophy or History as your major, and will study the other two as joint minors. The central aim of our PPH programme is to increase your understanding of, and ability to engage with, central questions, arguments, and texts in Philosophy, Politics and History, and to provide a lively sense of interrelations between these subjects.

Complement these studies with your Psychology minor, which trains you in the major areas of the contemporary scientific discipline, allowing you to understand how the personality dynamics and behavioural characteristics of key figures through history have played a part in shaping our modern world.

The Law with Philosophy LLB (Hons) is a Qualifying Law Degree, covering all of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board required areas of study to permit progression onto the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister.

The Law with Philosophy LLB (Hons) will allow you to prepare for your career and follow your passions. In your degree, you will take all of the courses required for a Qualifying Law Degree, preparing you to take the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Your Philosophy minor will complement your study of Law, bringing clarity and rigour to your thinking while you develop your understanding of and ability to engage with central philosophical questions, arguments theories and texts.

The English with Art History BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll take courses covering literature from 1550 to the present day, and you’ll explore forms of literature such as political speeches, the plays of Shakespeare, and responses to them.  For your Art History minor, you’ll study different forms of visual art in detail and their aesthetic and cultural contexts. These studies will allow you to make connections between art and the literature you study for your English major.
