Our Classics and Ancient History master's builds and expands on your previous studies. You can specialise in either classics or ancient history.

The course is primarily designed for students who have studied ancient history, classics or classical studies as their first degree.

The highly flexible master's in Classics and Ancient History offers you the opportunity to study a wide range of topics. These topics reflect the research specialisms of our staff in:

Classics and ancient history at Newcastle has a long and distinguished reputation for its research and teaching. We've taught Latin and Greek since 1874, ancient history since 1910, and classical archaeology since 1931.

You can choose to study one of two pathways: Classics or Ancient History.

If you're interested in classics, you'll study literatures, languages and cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome at an advanced level.

If you specialise in ancient history, you'll focus on the histories, societies and cultures of:

• Archaic and Classical Greece
• Rome
• The wider Mediterranean world

You'll develop your own research interests and professional skills.

This Landscape Architecture course will improve your ability to think critically about the design of place and space. You'll develop advanced skills to deal with complex aspects of landscape design and planning in a creative and innovative way.

You'll develop a practical understanding of the theories, methods and techniques that are applied to landscape architecture. Much of what you learn in this Landscape Architecture course is applicable worldwide.

On graduation you'll be equipped for advanced practice in landscape-related disciplines. The Landscape Architecture Studies MA is ideal if you want to:

Through the course you'll develop advanced transferrable skills in literacy, design and communication.

This philosophy degree pursues questions about the nature of reality, explores theories of knowledge, reflects on key ethical concepts, and examines issues related to the philosophy of art, culture, science and technology.

Newcastle Philosophy is rare among UK universities as much of our curriculum is dedicated to modern European philosophy. The curriculum includes thinkers such as Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, de Beauvoir, Sartre, Kristeva, Derrida and Foucault.

Our four-year Physics with Astrophysics degree provides a deep understanding of physics and a thorough grounding in advanced mathematics. You'll apply physics, mathematics and computation to understand the origin and evolution of the universe.

Hands-on experience in our high-spec facilities is embedded throughout the degree and will develop your practical skills for a wide range of physical science careers.

Guided by our world-leading academics, you'll study a broad range of cutting edge physics modules in the first two years. Your third year will allow you to specialise in astrophysics by selecting modules such as relativity and cosmology, stellar structure and evolution and interstellar medium.

Your final year includes advanced research-driven modules covering galaxies, astronomical fluids and general relativity.

This research master's includes taught and research-based elements. You'll focus in-depth on one aspect of German studies such as culture, literature and language from medieval to modern times.

Our research staff work in diverse fields. This ranges from sociocultural, historical and political studies to film and literature, linguistics and sociolinguistics.

All our degrees focus on three core areas – pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics – and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select modules evenly across both mathematics and statistics. These include:

• Complex variable
• Statistical inference
• Foundations of probability

You can also choose optional modules linked to the research expertise of our staff and learn about the latest developments in the discipline, such as advanced hydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and Bayesian inference.

BSc or MMath?
We offer our degrees at two levels:

• Three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees
• Four-year Master of Mathematics (MMath) or Master of Mathematics and Statistics (MMathStat) degrees

Our four-year degrees are more in-depth and include:

• Advanced topics and a wider choice of modules
• A specialist study, tailored to your own interests, that develops your skills in research and communication
• More technical skills, for those who wish to enhance their employability or proceed to postgraduate study

Transfer between the two levels is possible up until the middle of Stage 3.

To qualify for Stages 3 and 4 of the MMath/MMathStat degree, you must normally have obtained at least an upper-second-class average mark in Stages 2 and 3.

This three-year Contemporary and Popular Music degree focuses on a range of musics and approaches, from acoustic singer-songwriting to experimental electronic forms, and from ethnomusicology to cultural theory. You'll grow as an accomplished musician while developing your creativity and critical thinking.

While you may choose to specialise in contemporary and popular music, the beauty of music at Newcastle University is that we offer a broad musical education so you can also take modules from world, classical, and folk and traditional music. You’ll study a range of historical, theoretical and cultural topics such as: analysing music; music history; Indian music; DJing and turntablism; composition; and music, politics and policy.
