Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy

at University of Bristol - Clifton Campus United Kingdom

Overview

This course gives you the opportunity to study two distinct disciplines:

  • Philosophy, which questions everyday assumptions and enquires into the foundations of other forms of knowledge;
  • English literature, which involves the close, analytical study of poetry, fiction and drama.

You will learn the fundamental principles of logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and political philosophy, and study English literature in its full extent and diversity from the medieval period to the present day – including work on individual authors, topics, and genres. You will also be able to explore your own interests by choosing from a range of stimulating optional and research-led subjects.

The curriculum is designed to enable you to benefit from the research expertise of members of staff from both disciplines.

Bristol and the surrounding area host a thriving and world-renowned semiconductor design industry. The different groups involved in microelectronics research at the University of Bristol have many collaborative links with multinational companies in the microelectronics industry. These organisations have identified a shortfall in graduates with the necessary qualifications and professional skills to work in the sector, so this programme has been designed to meet this need.

A range of taught subjects cover core topics, such as digital and analogue ASIC design, DSP and FPGA-based computing, integrated sensors and actuators, radio-frequency and mixed-signal design. Changes are made periodically to reflect important emerging disciplines, such as electronics for the Internet of things, biomedical applications and quantum photonics applications.

The programme offers you the opportunity to learn from experts in microelectronics, nanoelectronics and computer science. You could move on to start working straight after your degree or continue your studies via a PhD. Special emphasis is put on providing you with a range of contemporary design skills to supplement theoretical knowledge. Lectures are accompanied by lab exercises in state-of-the-art industrial EDA software to give you valuable experience of a professional environment.

This four-year course has the same basic structure as BSc Geography but you will spend your third year studying geography and other subjects at an English-speaking university abroad.

In year one you receive an overview of human and physical geography, and develop a range of geographical and scientific skills. The remaining years are organised around specialist units from human and/or physical geography.

Physical geography units cover three broad areas: glaciology, hydrology and environmental change. Topics range from economic development and global politics to inequalities of health and contemporary social theory.

You will also develop skills in the use of specialised computer software, statistics and data collection in the field. Field trips and practical work are key components of the course. There are UK residential trips in year one and in year two there is an overseas field trip.

Your third-year studies abroad will be arranged on an individual basis. We currently have exchange agreements with universities in the US, Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Visit Global Opportunities to find out more about where you can study abroad.
