The LLM in Employment, Work and Equality has been well received by trade unions and NGOs as a distinctive programme that offers more than traditional courses in employment law. About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours sociology course. You will study society’s structures, forms of action and cultural practices, and understand changes in social life. You will gain a thorough grounding in sociology, as well as opportunities to specialise in new areas of research conducted by academics at the forefront of the discipline.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. You will undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science during your fourth year back in Bristol.

This degree develops analytical and quantitative skills applicable to a wide range of careers in economics and beyond.

We teach economics in a technically rigorous way. Econometrics - the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models - is a central component of the programme. During the first two years, mandatory units in macro and micro-economics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics provide you with a strong foundation.

You will complement this with optional modules from a wide range of choices within the Schools of Economics, Finance and Management and other parts of the University. The number of options increases as you progress through the degree, allowing you to select units from the areas of economics that most interest you.

In the final year most students choose an applied economics dissertation. You will also select from a wide range of optional units; in recent years these have included Behavioural Economics, Corporate Finance, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Industrial Economics, International Economics and Operations Management.

The Study Abroad course offers you the opportunity to extend your degree to four years, spending your third year studying economics in English at a university in Europe or farther afield. This course allows you to combine the challenging, broad academic content of our economics degree with an overseas dimension that reflects the international nature of the economy.

You will explore the full range of plant biology, from enzymes to ecosystems. Neuroscience is beginning to influence education across the world. This program, which can be studied on either a full-time or part-time basis, will provide you with the skills and understanding to interrogate and integrate insights from neuroscience and education.

It is suitable for teachers and practitioners of all subjects and across all ages, including teachers of children with special needs, educational psychologists, education managers, policymakers and educationalists who are keen to contribute to the research agenda of future cognitive neuroscience and educational neuroscience research. It is for those who want to enrich their thinking and practice with insights about typical and atypical learning from the sciences of the mind and brain.

The program also provides an excellent foundation for further research studies, such as a PhD, that involve the ideas and methods of cognitive neuroscience in areas related to education and learning.

You will engage with the latest research literature and debates, including the latest findings arising from the sciences of mind and brain in areas relevant to education (such as reading, attention, mathematics, language and learning disorders, autism, adolescent development, technology and creativity, along with many other areas). You will become an active researcher who draws on findings from neuroscience, psychology, genetics and educational research in order to carry out your own small-scale experiments and research studies, leading to the major work of your dissertation.

You will also complete a range of assignments that encourage written, graphical and oral communication of your ideas. You will become part of a broader community of study and research in the field of neuroscience and education through lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. The program will help you to gain confidence in making critical judgments about research findings, and in debating and discussing issues or ideas in the field of neuroscience and education.
